Hi SooS'ers!
I am beginning the book "Too Perfect" by Mallinger and DeWyze. I would be grateful if any of you would like to read along with me and discuss the book. I'm hoping it will open my eyes to some of my self-sabatoging behavior.
If there is another thread already on this book, my apologies.

For those with a perfectionist streak that keeps them from tasks until it can be done "the right way", this book is a godsend. Not that I'd know anything about perfectionism...

Actually, this book is about OCPD--Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. It is more than just your standard *run-of-the-mill* perfectionism.
To me, "run-of-the-mill" perfectionism means that I have high standards which *I* strive to achieve.
With OCPD, the person with the disorder is VERY into controlling both his AND everyone else's behaviors in an attempt to avert any possible calamities--and EVERYTHING is seen as a possible calamity!! (Some have even quipped that OCPD is an acronym for "Only Comtemplates Potential Disasters.)
Usually, with OCPD, the person has complete "meltdowns" when his or her sets of rules and standards aren't met EXACTLY. However, kowtowing to this sort of behavior usually just makes the whole syndome worse.
This book is discussed quite a lot on the OCPD support forums.

I have ordered this book as well. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention! I am really looking forward to reading it. Are we going to do a book club meeting in chat, or will we be using this thread to share our thoughts?

I've read part of the book, and found it helpful
Arid mentioned about OCPD and she's right, it was written for that clientele, but ...
... I don't have OCPD and it helped me anyhow.
One of the main reasons to read it is ... THIS is the book that originated the term "Demand Resistance". *** There is an entire chapter on that topic!

Thank You Lion for your perspective.
Although, as Arid states, I might not be the intended audience, I'm sure I can benefit from the book - as will all things in life, I am learning to use what applies to my life, and disregard the rest!
Maybe I will start it tonight.

oooh, jokamo, I missed your post. Glad you will join in. I wasn't thinking of doing it through chat, but that could work as well. I was hoping to sort of do a blog/discussion thread so that the work remains permanently, instead of rolling off the screen. This is my biggest challenge, not doing anything because I can't /don't have time to do it "right." I'm thinking that a thread would give me something to refer back to over time. What do you think?

Dr. Mallinger was my first psychiatrist, I saw him for a few years back in the 90's. He is a wonderful man. I have a signed copy of his book! I wasn't seeing him for OCD at the time. The book perfectly describes my hubby. It is a great book.

Script reviewed the book many years ago. *I saw the book [without review] mentioned in the Resource section of the old Squalor Survivor site [our predecessors]. *I got it out of the library *it knocked my sox off: so excellent *I ordered a copy and somehow it ended up in my work briefcase *my intention was to re-read it more thoroughly [subway trips] and write a review for SS *a co-worker saw it and wondered if I had brought it to give to OUR BOSS: who was a compulsive perfectionist nightmare.......... *ha ha. I believe this book would be helpful for MANY people, not just those specifically "labelled" OCPD.

I think discussing the book in a thread is a great idea. That way we can refer to it later, and other people can use it as a resource too.
