Because doing something as mundane and boring as cleaning out the garage is not enough to keep me enthralled all on its own, I've turned it into an interesting multimedia opportunity. I have taken 3 days off work + today (a normal day off) for and total = of 4 days to dedicate to the task of cleaning out the garage. I've got the DLSR camera on a tripod and computer set up in the garage to making a time lapse video of the entire process. I'm by far more excited about this than the actual cleaning of the garage. To add a bit of stress to this, tho, we have arranged to have a brand spanking new garage door installed on Wednesday morning. Here's the kicker tho. The garage door people require 6 feet minimum of work space to remove the old door. But because the current door is falling apart and can't be openned, I have to do this clean-out work without the luxury of a working garage that opens. Joy, right? Now, my garage isn't packed from floor to ceiling but we have many large pieces. 2 desks, 2 tables, lots of boxes, lawn equipment, etc. But worse, lots of rat droppings. LLOOOTTTSS. So I'll be wearing a mask, and possibly finding some carcasses in there. Wish me luck. BEFORE PIX www.flickr.com/photos/digsite/sets/72157622412632707/detail/Here it is!!! The final product.... First off, Good Luck !! Secondly, I LOVE the time lapse idea. I look forward to hearing how you're doing, and more importantly, when you're done.

Thanks!
Welp, so far hubby has hauled out 13 fifty gallon bags I filled with stuff from the garage to the curb. Garbage pick up is tomorrow morning. All those bags are filled with things that were obviously trash to me. But now things have started to slow down. The next logical and ideal step for me would be to have a dumpster parked in the driveway, throw open that garage door, and just chuck all the BIG things we don't want.
Out would go 1 bbq, 1 fish tank stand, 7 monitors, 6 computers, 2 large desks, 1 computer table, a book case full of books, and every computer cable or part in a 4 drawer thingy I haven't openned in 7 years. With all that stuff out, it would be easier to figure out what to do with the rest of the stuff. But instead I have to figure out how to work around all of it until after the door is replaced, and then figure out how to dispose / freecycle / sell / whatever all those large things I just mentioned.
sigh....

it's 1pm, there's still hours left in the day, and I've made incredible progress today already! I spent a lot of time thinking about what to do about all the stuff we want to get rid of last night. How do we get rid of it fast and for free. So I decided we'd put everything outside in front of the house and make a "first come first served" freecycle post but I got a response from the admin saying those kinds of posts were not allowed. I said fine, so I posted it on craig's list instead. I listed everything that would be out front and asked that they email me to get the address. So today I let go the following long list of things. 1 black wrought iron fish tank stand (fits a 75 gallon tank) 1 fold up computer table 1 charcoal bbq 5 Computers (all towers; hard drives will be removed) 1 apple macintosh G4 1 ibm ps/1 486 1 intel 586 1 intel celeron (or 686) 1 amd (intel 686 equiv) 7 CRT computer monitors from 15" to 19", all should work. 1 six-sided play yard (for kids or pets) I got about 15 emails from people and gave them the address. They took EVERYTHING! even the fold-up table I used to put the monitors on. And I didn't intend that table to go! But thankfully I wasn't attached it it, so I cut my losses with that. Next time I'll have to put a sign on the table that it's not OK to take. But anyways... NOW there's room to maneuver and clean things. Next we have books and lawn equipment. Haven't figured out how to dispose of them. Books are usually too heavy for garbage bags. And the lawn stuff has to be sold.

Oh PerfectM, that is so funny about them taking the table. Yay for you for taking the loss of it with good humor.

Hey guys, I'm back to report on further progress made on the garage project.
I'm at the point where I'm wondering if I should stop taking time lapse photos because I'm running out of things to purge.
After my previous update where I gave away all the computers and lost a table in the process, I have sold all our big lawn equipment.
Lawnmower leaf blower chain saw weed whacker
We have also disposed of a high chair which we discovered had been ravaged by rats. It's too bad too because it was in great condition otherwise.
Yesterday I did a great deal of organizing of the remaining tools with plastic storage bins. All that is left now is office/computer stuff. I'm surprised how much is still left over having having given away and thrown out so much computer stuff already. We have SO MANY hard drives but can't pare down on those until we get a chance to get on each one to see what data is there that might be important. It's all old so probably not much. Still can't toss them without erasing them.
This has taken a lot longer than expected. But it's no small matter when you want things "perfect". Not easy when there's so much STUFF around.
I ordered a hanging gardening tool rack that is very adjustable. Cost $92. But the shipping is $30. which is nutts, but we need a good solution for all the rakes, shovels, brooms, etc.
OK, I just thought I never included a before picture of this disaster area. I'll do that tonight.

Wow!! You have done an incredible amount of work!! Congratulations to you, and thanks for the inspiration.
I wonder if there's anyway you can put your time-lapse video on this site? It would be really fun to see it.

Just another Update....
I think that I can declare the garage project to be 95% done.
The last 5% consists of 1) Receiving and installing storage wall rack for lawn tools. (already ordered). 2) Ordering and installing a storage solution for hurricane shutters. (down to 2 choices so far) 3) Selling large encylopedia set. (new owner already found) 4) Ridding myself of large speakers (new owner already found) 5) purging and safely disposing of hazardous materials (paint, flourescent lights)
Lastly, we have about 2 boxes of office type stuff that can't go into the office until that office is complete. That's another project that is still half way done. After Garage is done, I'll move on to the office.
Also, my time lapse video is going thru several morphs as I experiment things.
Now I can't decide if I want to wait until I record timelapse of the rack installations or not. That's going to take another 2,3 weeks because we have to wait for those to ship. decisions decisions...
