Hi everyone. I just wondered how many of you have read this book? I saw it quoted on squalorsurvivors.com, and had to go out and buy it! Then I saw someone on here recommend it, so felt pleased with my purchase without having read it. I have now started on it, and I'm finding it sooooooo helpful!!! I mean, I love how supportive, understanding and helpful everyone is here, but to read it in a book somehow confirms that we're not all a bunch of weirdos trying to justify and excuse our weirdness! !! I do KNOW we're not!! I'm not putting anyone down!! After all, my own squalor is worse even than that of a lot of the lovely people on here. So I know our problem is very real and is genuinely suffered by many people. But, you know what I mean. (I hope!!! ) Although I have read many, many personal stories on here, all which show unequivocally that this is a genuine condition I am suffering, and not just downright l-a-z-iness, there's still part of my head that nags at me that maybe it IS just l-a-z-iness! That maybe everyone here is suffering a genuine condition, but that maybe I'M not! I have to reiterate that I do know rationally that my problem is as genuine as the next person's! And that each person here has a genuine condition and isn't the L word! So PLEASE don't think I'm suggesting otherwise! I'm just trying to explain how my brain works! And how it taunts me! Anyway, what I'm trying to ask (in a long winded and rambling kind of a way, ) is how many of you have read the book Feeling Good - the new mood therapy, by David Burns? Did you find it helpful? I'm finding it so helpful in validating how I feel. It's comforting and makes me feel less guilty. And while it's making me feel less guilty and makes me less hard on myself, it encourages me and motivates me. I also think there are certain sections my partner would benefit from reading in order to understand me and my problem better. I would recommend this book to everyone here who hasn't read it!!

my memory is not what it used to be but i am almost certain that it was in ONE of David Burns' books that he had the CHART on various aspects of cognitive distortion also known as 'stinkin' thinkin' i photocopied that chart and kept in in my WORK daytimer to look at periodically as a helpful reminder...as I have a LOT of problems with 'mind reading, awful-izing' and so on Feeling Good is supposed to be one of the best handbooks on depression thank you for bringing it to the attention of our group edited to add: here is the link to some material on the Squalor Survivor site directly related to this book www.squalorsurvivors.com/overcoming/yourself/depression.shtmlIt was written by our former member Script

Yipee they have the 1999 edition - 706 pages! I plan to go there today - however the library is being remodeled/carpeted and some sections are closed off - so hopefully I can get it today - but I put it on hold - so I will know soon.

I read this book in early 1980's when i was severely depressed and agoraphobic. It changed my life and helped me to analyze the roots of my anxiety and fears. Sapphire, I am so glad you have reminded me of this book. I was just at Dr. Burns' site and see that he recently published a book "When panic attacks". I was agoraphobic for about seven years and took about three more years to fully recover. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. success19,I am so excited to hear that there is a 706 page book now! It was just pocket book size when I had it. I know it is in a box in my storage locker!

Yes, I have owned it, for over 15 years. (Guess I don't use it enough, if I am not cured yet of depression?) I have recommended it on this forum.
In fact, I used some of his reasoning today, with not being angry with myself for procrastinating on a task.
I really think that EVERYONE can benefit from this book. (Well, perhaps I have met a few extremely well adjusted people , but they are the exception.)
