I have a habit of attaching bolts to the item they belong to. A few years ago when we moved, my office desk was taken apart and the hardware was separated from the rest of the desk. It took my husband 4 years to find the missing hardware. In the meantime, of course, I had already replaced the desk.
In all other cases, like the bolts for my quilting frame are right there with it. The bolts to the day bed are in a plastic bag attached to the bed frame. Labeling these little clear plastic bags is also important to me, too, because IF they get separated from their counterpart, the label will help them get back where they belong.
Lizzie, a picture would be a great way to label that box. Maybe you have a magazine or a pattern for a beaded item with an appropriate photo.
Cavylady, Hooray! Not only did you find the little care package items for your daughter in time, you also found the bolts to do the repair. You are obviously gaining ground.
Messymimi, I really like the idea of writing a little note on the calendar about where those items are so that in June (or whatever month the event will take place) you will see the reminder.

dear seeking - that is a good idea many people will be interested in. you should post this again.maybe start your own thread?
I personally could never follow any system that involved sitting down, because I jsut wouldnt do it. but since I live alone its not necessary. for people with families or needing to keep lots of stuff, this would be excellent.

I have long thought that if I ever get a computer of my own, a prime use of it would be to record for myself where I put things.
