Djollydjolan ~~ Wow, I am just astounded by your food storage system and variety of ingredients. I want that. This might be a little off topic but it seems to fit here. I have the exact opposite problem. Zero food hoarding. I have very little food in the house. What I have is very basic and I eat little variety. It is like I have a mental block when it comes to buying food and to preparing and cooking food. I depend on other family members to feed me... when I visit their houses each week. I know about healthy eating. Always have good intentions to stop at the local farmers market for fresh fruit and veggies, but I never follow thru. Eternal -- I am thinking that your new system for having groceries delivered, coupled with the brilliant ideas here from everyone else, just might work for me. I will start with a plan, as explained by Chris, and only order what I think is enough for one week. Then, at the end of the first week, I will assess how much food is left. Gradually, overtime, I will create a pantry with spices, condiments, etc. using the ideas from djollydjolan. Are there others here who have the book knowledge for healthy eating but don't have the skills? I am totally at a loss when it comes to doing the actual physical task of food shopping and preparing meals on a consistent basis. (I am capable of pulling together a nice meal but don't enjoy the process, so it rarely happens.) Thank you for this thread, eternal. I really think the ideas being generated here can also help those of us who are the opposite extreme. You've given me hope that I can one day have a nicely stocked kitchen.

Peach, I have never really learned much cooking because every place I've ever lived has had a really bad kitchen--no counter space, no room for a table--my current kitchen doesn't even have wall cabinets. But I do the best I can using my dining room table, and keeping it simple. What helped me a lot the last few months was using my slow cooker--you can get a few basic recipes, keep those ingredients on hand, then it's not a lot of work to throw everything in the pot and let it cook for several hours. It's not quite unattended, because I find I have to check mine to see how the liquid is absorbing/evaporating, but it has allowed me to have some really delicious meals with not a lot of effort. I'm vegetarian, and never really realized that a slow cooker was not just for meat!
I made a big pot of beans and rice this week using canned beans so I wouldn't have to heat up the apartment more than necessary, and they are SO good.

That is a great idea, dtesposito! I have thought about getting a slow cooker in the past. I love beans. I do have a veggie steamer, juicer and wok -- but they're never used, since no food in the house. My project for today will be to get them out of the cabinet and wash the dust off. Thank you! I do have a nice kitchen with enough counter space and lots of mostly empty cabinets.

im a food hoarder trying to reform so im in the same boat! but i had an idea to try and help me keep track of whats in the pantry and thats one of those marker boards that you can wipe off. i want to put one on the door to the pantry and keep a running count of what is in there. i used to make lists but then i would lose the list or be unable to keep up with it so im thinking this might actually work. this way not only would i be able to glance at it before shopping but also i could see exactly how many there are of each particular item.

Someone came in and stole my boxes of canned foods while I was gone. And my homecanned jams so now I have to begin again anyway...and I'm broke. I will NEVER over buy food like I used to.

I'm not a food hoarder in the sense of the word. I am however an over buyer in groceries and end up having to throw away way too much. I never had a problem with throwing any food out in the refrigerator even if it could be used in a few days. If I knew I wasn't going to use it and the trash was being picked up that day would toss it.
Today will be my 1st time using Stop and Shop's home delivery to see if I can curtail my spending on needless items. Even with the $9.95 delivery fee it'll still be cheaper than over spending by a hundred or so.
