Hi Mimi and anyone else reading this.
Just thought I'd let you know that the 'big move' has now taken place and I've survived (just!).
It was a total nightmare. The removal men arrived an hour earlier than they said and I was still frantically trying to tidy the place up and pack up boxes. The bedroom had random stuff strewn all over the floor and I still had loads of food to deal with in the kitchen. However, the men were nice and helped as much as they could. They were used to dealing with similar situations and worse.
In the end they just had to take what was packed and leave the rest for me to put into storage. I had to stay behind an extra night to clear out the house and clean up, but eventually got away at 11 am today. I was worried about my elderly parents having all my stuff delivered without me being there, but the removal firm kindly agreed to delay the delivery till Monday (still have that to face...).
I had finally managed to get the garage cleared on Tuesday with the help of a friend, but that meant that my storage space was too full to take the extra from the house and I had to rent a bigger unit. Everything got so mixed up that I left behind things I'd meant to take with me - like all my jewellery and a suitcase full of summer clothing. Don't know yet how or when I'm going to get it all transferred to my new address, and there's no way it will fit in my parents' garage with all the other stuff that's already coming. It looks like I'll be paying for storage till I get a place of my own.
Anyway, the good thing was that one or two of my friends helped me during the last few days. I honestly don't know what I'd have done without one of them in particular, who helped me pack up stuff before the 'move' and came back last night to work with me in the kitchen, staying till midnight. He bagged up all the food that I was having difficulty dealing with and took all the trash bags outside. He was also a tremendous moral support and reassured me by pointing out that it didn't matter that the jars and packets weren't emptied and cleaned for recycling, as everything naturally recycles anyway, even on rubbish dumps - glass grinds down and becomes smooth, the metal lids rust away, creatures feed on the food waste, etc. On top of all that he bought me chocolates and accompanied me to the guest house where I booked in for the night (having no bed to sleep in!). Strange thing is, he's the last person I would have expected to be such a good support, as he's not one of my closest friends.
Another good friend helped me transfer all the stuff from my original storage space into the larger one. I was so emotionally and physically exhausted that I couldn't have faced this on my own.
Too tired to write more now, but am glad to be with my parents in their nice, clean and tidy house! Am planning to try and continue the decluttering process once my belongings arrive on Monday, so will keep you posted.
