I read with interest all the ideas on strange odours in one's home. We have gone through a week of nausea and headache from an unnamed smell. Did all the things people suggested. Today we got a friend in and discovered we have a packrat (now dead) under the house. You cannot imagine the smell. He is now removing all the insulation that had any feces as if you leave ANY, more will come. Found the hole he dug and it is blocked. Food source? He was eating flowers that were going to seed. Now have every window and door wide open, have gone thru oodles of air fresheners and am hoping by tonight we can have some heat on and feel like eating again! hilltopper in BC

Placing a small dab of Vick's vapo rub under your nose will help keep the odor of decomposing pack rat out of your nose and perhaps not make you feel so ill.

So sorry this happened to you, HillTopper.
Vermin can get into anyone's house, so please don't blame yourself for this, and i hope the smell is gone now.

I've traced bad smells in my house to my the kitchen drain, water and bugs in flower pots, once a rotting potato. Get rid of the thing, open windows even if it's cold out. As my 2nd grade teacher Mrs, Hall said, fresh air and sunshine are free.

I feel your pain. I have heard a live animal in my crawl space during the past few weeks. Thought it might be my sick cat that has gone missing but doubt that since I haven't seen her eating the cat food I put out during the day (and put inside the house during nights so I won't attract other critters). More likely it is a raccoon or possum. I don't really want to go under the house to see. I would rather find it dead though. I talked to a DNR agent and he said raccoons can be nasty and they carry 40% of the rabies here.
