- Hello, everyone!
Glowworm originally suggested doing 30 challenges .... in the style of Illuminata's challenges on the prior forum.
Illuminata used to do 30 days in a row of challenges ... during a season, or in preparation for an event. They are fun, goofy, and inspiring.
Most importantly, they can be SMALL challenges (or as large as you wish). Just do take one action (of the theme of the day) to make your life better. It can be a little thing.
Here's how Glowworm beautifully explained the concept:
Re: Illuminata's fun challenges
For those who didn't see this on the old board, Illuminata picked a word for the day, and challenged the rest of us to find something to desqualor or clean that was related to that word. For example, if the word was "cold" you could clean out old food in your refrigerator (which is cold inside) or pick up tissues off the floor from the cold you had last week, or pick up your coat (which you wore because it was cold outside that day) and hang it in the closet.
It was noted that, per copyright rules, we aren't allowed to quote somebody's posts from the old board, unless the original poster personally gives permission for the specific quote.
I understand that we can't copy and paste her challenges from the old board, but would we be able to continue our own challenge along the same idea on this board?
Note: The Admins here at SOS gave permission to create new original challenges in a similar style.
These types of challenges are fun, crazy, and creative. They can be done as a game, for the whole family.
Those challenges from Illuminata were pivotal in getting my family to work with me in a fun way, and in winning over squalor!
Graciously, Glowworm started a new set of fun challenges for this SOS board.
Glowworm hasn't posted recently. I do hope she is well and happy, wherever she is.
Here are the challenges we've done here so far:
- You don't have to do them in order.
- They can be done at any time.
- You can skip some and do others.
- You can just post enthusiastic support, if that's all you wish to post about.
Click on each link to see the thread for that challenge, and all the interesting and creative replies.

(You'll note that challenges # 24 and # 25 can overlap ... or be completely different ... as the words involved can have many alternate meanings).
Fun Challenge # 25 This challenge could use either (or both) of two words.- The word "SPRING" -- in honor of those living south of the Equator.
- :: OR ::
- The word "FALL" -- in honor of those living north of the Equator.
- Examples:
The spring season; OR ... Non-Seasonal things things like: a household item containing a spring mechanism; spring water; Bruce SPRINGsteen, etc. -- anything related to any form of the word "spring".
The fall (autumn) season; OR ... Non-Seasonal things things like: fall down, fall behind, fall behind, fall under -- anything related to any form of the word "fall". Fun Challenge # 25 ("spring" and/or "fall") takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/1882
Fun Challenge # 26 ("five")(the number 5) takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/1933
Fun Challenge # 27 ("fire") takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/1941
Fun Challenge # 28 ("simple" or "simplify") takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/1956
Fun Challenge # 29 ("no") takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/1979
Fun Challenge # 30 ("change") takeonestepatatime.proboards.com/thread/1988
If you want to reply about your fun with one word, it might be nice if you could click on the link to that particular word's thread, and reply on THAT WORD's THREAD.However, sometimes people start on the "green" challenge, but find it encompasses the "cold" challenge, or whatever, and end up including both replies on one thread.
As these are "rule-free" games, I guess it doesn't matter much where you post your replies. All that matters is that we have some fun doing desqualoring.
And challenge #20 is "random", so I guess you could post about it anywhere.
Option: It is fine and welcomed if you just want to add a post to this thread anywhere, giving a list of all the ones you tried and what tasks you did for each one. I'd be happy to read anybody's list of stuff they did. Many people didn't do ALL of them. So it's okay if you just list a few.

haha! That is fun, reading everyone's different answers. Of course now I'm waffling over which one to try first. I guess I will start with 1.

My rediculous challenge was easy, because the amount of chores that I had allowed to remain undone WAS rediculous! Today I emptied a box that sat in my parlour for months, and added to my donation box. I also started a load of laundry because the size of my laundryzilla was rediculous. I also straightened out/re-arranged my parlour furniture. This was a great challenge word, Lioness! 3g

- Hello all...
Just wondering ... how do you think these challenges are going so far?My own thoughts:
In some ways it was more fun when Illuminata posted one every day in a row for 30 days.
But I haven't had time to do that, as I've been busy, so I've just posted when I had the time.
On the other hand, when one was posted every day, I started falling behind. Odd that I felt pressure, when I knew that it wasn't necessary to do all of them anyhow.
Regarding this current set of challenges: I liked the way that GlowWorm did her thread-openers. Simple, clear and to the point.
I think I've been going into too much detail in each day's thread-opener. I've tried to give ideas, but perhaps that's not needed.
I do like how Illuminata encouraged everyone to do "creative association". She would say that if the word was "cold", then it could be anything related to being sick with a headcold, or being cold, or cold weather, or cold emotions... anything you associated with "cold" - even if it didn't seem obvious. Or any object you associated with one of those things, however indirectly.
I tend to be a boxy linear thinker, so I guess that's why I felt the need to pull word associations out of my brain (as they don't come easily to me). Perhaps that's why I typed in so many ideas inside each thread-header.
For playing the game myself:
I've found the process to be interesting. For example, when the "word" was the color green, I started noticing messy green things all day long.
Possible variation:
I have been thinking about that game you play with children when going on a long trip in a car ... having a contest to see who can spot the most "somethings" while looking out the window (cows, out-of-state license plates, certain brands of cars, etc, etc). ... and ...
... I thought of a similar idea regarding this "DESQUALORING-WORD-OF-THE-DAY" fun challenge game. I am guessing this would be a great family game. You tell the kids at the beginning of the day ... "here's the word of the day" ... and then they all try to organize/clean/toss as many things related to that word as possible. Maybe a contest to see who can do the most? I live alone, but if I lived with other people, I would definitely try this.
I realize that the original game suggested that you find just one thing to do that is related to the word of the day ... or more if you want to. But I thought the family contest idea might have some merit. Anyhow...
Two questions:
1) How did Illuminata do these challenges? How was her way different from how I'm doing them? How could I recapture that fun spirit?
2) Any other insights, comments, suggestions, variations, etc., etc. ??
(more questions later in this thread).
Thanks, Lioness-

Hi Lion!
I will participate however you do them; I've been meaning to anyway.
I wasn't on the board as much as when Illuminata was here, and didn't do the challenge posts, but I thought she was a great writer and and a sweet person and loved her posts -- do you know how she is doing these days?

Lion I think what ever you do is great!
I do not usually look at them but I did today because I am a bit of a loose end and I thought that your challenge would motivate me.
Thank You for always being there!

I only just started cluing in to these. I like them and they are well named. Putting it in the mode of fun, very good. I read Lumi's posts when we were at ss but don't think I registered these -- like I probably didn't open them. or it went by me if I did. you know, lion, your job in life is not to be Illuminata. It is to be CourageouslyLion_Seeks Serenity, punctuate that as you will. and I bet real money you do a hell of a better job at that than she ever could. Ms. HopeHope

- UPDATE: ClarificationI want to clarify that these survey questions aren't really meant to be about me or my methods.
I won't always be the one leading these challenges. I merely picked up where Glowworm left off -- for this series of 30. Anybody could be leading them in the future.
My questions are meant more to ask what sort of challenges in this series did you enjoy most, because it's helpful to have feedback for whoever might be leading the challenges in the future.
Also asking for ideas about variations on games you might have played with these challenges ... fun variations that any of us could try.UPDATE: MORE QUESTIONS:I've numbered the questions -- but you don't have to answer them by number, unless you want to. Whatever's easier for you. You can just reply with random comments. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
There are no "right" or "wrong" answers. Each of us will have had different experiences.
Need creative ideas on the earlier questions, and practical coordination on questions #13 and #14.
(Starting with question #3 -- Adding on to my prior two questions earlier in this thread.) [/blockquote] Question #3: If you happened to read all the intros to each of these 30 challenges: What sort of intro to a thread did you find easiest to read? #3A: Did colors, smileys, and photos make it easier and more fun to read ? Or more cluttered?
#3B: Did it help to include lots of examples and suggestions for optional ways of working with the "word of the day" ... or was all that info too cluttering for the thread header? Would it have been clearer if a separate post within the thread had brainstorming ideas for the word? Question #4: Of the ones that you tried, which ones were most fun? Which ones did you find boring or difficult? And why? Question #5 (not a question but a comment): If anybody did some or any of them, but didn't want to post on each daily thread.... I realize now that there's no need to require that your done-tasks be posted on each individual word-thread.
It is fine and welcomed if you just want to add a post to this thread anywhere, giving a list of all the ones you tried and what tasks you did for each one. I'd be happy to read anybody's list of stuff they did. Many people didn't do ALL of them. So it's okay if you just list a few.
Not requring this. Just saying it's an option -- if you want to post all your results here, instead of on the individual threads.
Note: This isn't about "reporting in" to me or anyone else.
This is about sharing fun ideas with the membership ... and sharing ideas with whoever might lead these challenges in the future.
And it's also a fun way of bragging about a list of stuff you got done. Question #6: Please list any "WORDS" that you can think of that might be fun for future 'word-of-the-day' challenges. Question #7: Philosophical questions: What benefits did you get from doing these? Did the challenges help by giving something for you to do when you felt stuck or unmotivated? Question #8: Anything unexpected happen when doing these? Silly stories, fun results? Unexpected sad emotions? Interesting reactions from family members? Question #9: Did you change the game format in any way? What variations did you try? Just looking for fun ideas. Question #10: Did people try to just do one challenge each date, related to the word-of-the-day? Or did they try to do lots of challenges based on that one word? There is no "right" or "wrong" answer here. Just wondering. Question #11: Did anybody try doing more than one word within a single day? Was that fun or confusing? Question #12: Did anybody try doing these with family/household members? How did that go? Question #13: How could this be done in the future, so that one person doesn't have to lead it every day?
I realize that on the Accountability Partners thread and the Working in Threes thread (in ListZilla), anybody can start the daily thread.
But with these "word of the day" challenges ... everybody would need to coordinate in some way ... so that the same word isn't repeated within the same month.
Any suggestions for a "word bank" where people contribute ideas ... then sombody assigns the word to calendar dates, then ANYBODY can look at the "Word Calender" and start the daily thread?
Any ideas how to do this easily? I wasn't able to post every day. But if we had multiple leaders and a coordinated system, it would be easier.
On the other hand, if somebody finds that by signing up to do this EVERY day, it HELPS her/him because it helps him/her to take ACTION ... well that would be good, too. That could be tried by anyone who would gain a benefit from that.
However, over the years, I've seen burnout from people feeling obligated to lead a thread every single day.
Comments? Thoughts? How could we organize this in the future? Question #14: Illuminata used to post her "30 crazy challenges" just or or two or three times a year. She did 30 challenges leading up to a holiday, for example. A way to help us prepare for holiday events but keeping the fun and the humor involved.
Do people want to do these 30 challenges only a few times per year? Or do you want to do it every day? Question #15: Any other suggestions/variations/comments? Thanks in advance from anybody leading these challenges in the future. -

I`m not going to go through the whole list of questions, but I do have a couple of thoughts for feedback. First, IMO, how you are doing them is just fine. It doesn`t feel at all like you think the whole idea is your exclusive property, so that someone else could jump in with an idea for word of the day. With Lumy`s list, it was her idea, her "thing", and far as I know, no one else at the time thought of taking it over. Which is not to say, if she wanted to sign up here and lead it again for a holiday, that we couldn`t even have both, a special daily challenge counting down and an occaisional word of the day challenge, if anyone wanted to. Although I read almost everything, I don`t often do the special challenges on the board or post a lot in general. Most days I check in here to see if anything special is going on with anyone and for inspiration for myself. If I get stuck, sometimes it`s fun and helpful to have a starting place- that`s where word of the day is good for me. I haven`t looked around the entire board lately to know where this would best fit, maybe a thread in community information, to list words that have been used. Then anyone who wanted to start a new one could pick something that hasn`t been used lately and go from there. I`m thinking something like the usual daily Accountability Partners, where whoever feels like it and gets in first that day can start a new thread. Just my thoughts, SM

I put all of my answeres in quotations, because I cannot change my font or color. THAT is what annoys me more than ANYTHING in this forum. Next to that is having to click on "View all smileys" click the one we want, and remember to close that window before we add to our post, or the darn thing reads "Javascript void" the next time we need a smiley! SS was so much easier in that regard. 3g

Well,
With Illuminata, it was fun because it was preparing for a fun time of year. Christmas is a fun time of year. Maybe not for everyone, though. For some it is a stressful time of year and the fun challenges helped bring fun back into the preparations for this time of year.
Long intro's can become cumbersome and boring, but for those who don't want to read through the long intro, having the word of the day highlighted in either color or a larger font or bold, helps them to find the word. I am such a person, and finding the word easily helped.
Words that can be used in the future (may include words used in the past):
white black red green blue (each color or shade of color) hard soft flat round cone triangle globe heat cold electric shiny sparkle read write dance laughter light dark rest
As for how to get the challenges posted every day when one person isn't able to be the one to start it every day: A short and to the point intro would lend itself well to being copied and pasted into a new thread that anyone could start. The word could be added at the end of the new post by the person posting.
It probably wouldn't hurt to repeat a word once or twice in a 30-day period, though. If people missed the challenge before, it wouldn't matter. And if they had done the challenge before, they probably didn't use the word to it's full potential and variables, so it really would be okay to repeat a word.
If a group (say 2 or 3 or 4 people) really wanted to take responsibility for a week at a time or something like that, the few could coordinate with each other about the words. But I don't think synchronicity is all that important, in order for it to be fun. If each person is spontaneous and uses word association that means something special to them, they are more likely to bring some fun into the exercise by virtue of their own experience.

- Here is an idea that our member Skatters posted on another thread: Another thing that comes to mind to get your kids involved is an idea from the old board and from the challenges listed here. Pick a word, and have the kids race around picking up anything that relates to that word. For instance... "blue". The kids can pick up, put away, or throw out anything that is blue, or makes them feel blue. "Hot" can be anything hot pink, or anything that is red like flames. Anything that makes them hot. Have the kids take turns calling out different words. Cool idea, having the kids come up with .. and call out words !
I also received some various private messages with feedback. Some of the ideas from the private messages is similar to what has already been mentioned by other people above.
However ... other persons suggested that it's important to not make it into a "competition". Some members are stressed and overwhelmed. Just doing ONE task of the word of the day is a big deal for them. As an example ... if the word-of-the-day were "purple" ... it can be awkward when some people are trying to put away as many purple items as possible ... when others are struggling to do just one. So as a suggestion to future leaders ... it would be good to suggest that everyone work at their own rate ... and it's fine to do just one item. And that nobody is competing with anyone else. Thank you everyone for your replies !
I am thinking this might work well on ListZilla ... Our member "udderchaos" might be helping with leading these challenges in the future. She welcomes others to work with her on this and/or co-lead. YAY ! -
