Ugh. It is one of my pet peeves that my own church underpays the cleaners and the nursery workers. The office workers and the various pastors have great salaries and benefits packages but the cleaners and caregivers are treated like they are stealing from the church if they want fair pay for hard work My mother pays her housecleaners (three ladies who work together) 100 dollars a week for about two hours of work--so it works out to around 16.50 dollars an hour per person. At that rate you would have made around 54 dollars for your work today.

Hi Charis -- yes I really think it is underpaid badly -- I feel that anything less than $10 an hour for such heavy work is unfair. I would have been okay with $32.50 which would have at least been $10 a hour -- but I will pass on future cleaning -- it was not pleasant and I have a feeling the girl doing it now is sick alright -- sick of working for too little. My husband did the lawn for a year (4 acres) free and when his mom got sick there were no other men who could/would so they told him that they hired someone. He's all done needless to say but we still love our church it's just a sore spot that laborers are sort of taken for granted.

Just peeking in to say hello!
We used to clean a church we attended. It is hard work, and because the church was next to broke, we took the job as part of our ministry there and were paid a pittance.
Of course, as soon as they could afford to pay more, they fired us.
My suggestion would be to not take that job again.

messymimi Hi Mimi -- my thoughts exactly -- there are other ways that I can give to the church -- I feel my work maintaining their website is worth far more in the long run as it draws newcomers and informs people what is happening -- and is much more inline with the type of work I am now interested in. I did a whole training and put together an idiot proof "how to" packet for the 3 weeks I was gone to Vermont and noone did anything to it while I was gone. I think it's just all about learning what I want to do and like to do and sticking with that. I have a tendency to take on too many of other peoples problems.

Thursday -- Aug. 30 Wow the month is almost over. Well when I picked up my check they had paid me $35. That is better than $25 but it's still a one time - never again lesson/event (cleaning the church) it's too big and heavy a commercial job and my interests lie elsewhere. fed cats eat breakfast check clothing to see if a load needs to be done shower/dress run my process/meditation 7 steps as practice to see how it works organize my supply cabinet in the kitchen!!!!! More later -- we slept late because we watched a movie at home after my night class. Class got out at 8 but still we didn't start the movie til almost 9. I guess we're still in summer mode here.

Good morning Chris, I've been busy with pet care jobs (my first busy week for practically the whole summer) and missed a lot--I didn't even know you had a trip to Austin planned.
If they ask you to clean the church again, tell them flat out that it was too much work for the pay, but if they ever are able to increase the amount you'd be happy to reconsider. Maybe they will realize that they're asking too much.
Mid-90s here today, but tomorrow is supposed to be at least 10 degrees cooler.

Hi Diane -- nice to hear from you! I'm glad tomorrow is expected to be a lot cooler there! I hope it will also let up here tomorrow and either rain or be cloudy -- the family has planned a big picnic at a large park with bikes and all -- but if it's still 100 degree I won't be riding my bike or be able to stand it long. My idea of a nice Saturday is not outdoors unless there is water involved here in TX -- now back home I bet its beautiful right now!!! Yes I was going on a mini trip to Austin with church folks but for me I saw too many concerns and not just money so I changed my mind. My savings are coming along good for my trip to Vermont too and I didn't want to blow that. There are some local opportunities to do stuff with friends and so I will take advantage of those activities vs. blowing a large amount of energy, money, time all at once on the overnight trip. Used my pay from the cleaning to renew my most favorite magazine + had some left. The did end up paying me $35 which is much closer to reasonable. The job is/was still too heavy for me working alone. I hope the lady who does it (she has shingles or something) gets well really fast.

Dreaded picnic is over. 4 hours in the hot wind - had to hold plates and food to keep from losing them -- - no drama at least - very minor if any. So tired today from the day in the heat yesterday. Going swimming to relax and recover from all that.

Hi Ann -- welcome to SOOS I've been here a couple of years on this board and I've really changed a lot and improved our home and my organization!!! I give credit to all the wonderful encouragement and ideas from the awesome people here! This thread is relatively new thing for me to do -- I like being in accountability partners as well but I seem to do better with an ongoing non-structured thread where I sputter and work thru things at my own weird pace. Thanks for stopping by - and good luck to you in your journey!!!!
