In my case, dry cracked heels occurs when I forget to moisturize in the summertime, while wearing sandals all the time. However, there can be other causes as mentioned above. Here is a link with more information.I used to use moisturizer + bed socks to cover the moisturizer at night. Mostly now, I just moisturize any time and put my feet up for awhile and let it soak in. Sometimes I'll put socks on over, but often not. It makes a huge difference when I moisturize daily or even several times a day in the summertime. Thank you for finding that link and posting it here. This is the information I was looking for.

FootSmart *is* a shoe store, though this page seems to be about heel problems.

Sometimes, dry flakey skin on your feet can be a sign of a type of fungal infection (aka athlete's foot) called "moccasin-style tinea pedis." It looks like flakey skin on the parts of your feet that would be covered by a shoe, in a uniform pattern. This can be treated with an antifungal cream. By the way, athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm are all infections of the tinea fungus--just living on different parts of our bodies.
Callouses are thickened areas of skin that are always cause by friction. If the affected area is in a place where your shoes rub on your feet, it's probably a callous. Make sure your shoes are well-fitting, and large enough to keep your toes from rubbing.
I have callouses on my heels--most people do. I also have occsasional problems with athlete's foot inbetween my toes. I use a pumice stone on my heels when I shower--it was marketed for cleaning toilets, but it's just right for my feet. I can usually keep the athlete's foot under control by applying rubbing alcohol inbetween my toes daily. Cheap and simple.
Fungus like warmth, moisture, and darkness. If you can change the climate of the affected area, you can help keep it from coming back.

do my best with the ongoing lifelong skin-picking-nail-biting-habit-torture. I have very good weeks; then will have a 'relapse'. Best thing for ongoing cuticle care: Burt's Bees or any other honey-beeswax based product. There is a supplement that helps some people overcome nail-biting. It worked for me. It is called acetylcysteine or N-actylcysteine or N-acetyl-cysteine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AcetylcysteineIt is available in many countries without prescription. It is sold as a nutritional supplement. I buy this one : www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=12&searchterm=n-acetyl%20cysteine&rdcnt=1I took one a day for quite a few months. It is also available in the US : www.swansonvitamins.com/SW854/ItemDetailIf you try it, be warned it doesn't smell that great... I don't take the stuff every day now. Once I got the nail-biting under control I just started taking it whenever I found myself sticking my nails in my mouth. I would definitely suggest doing some research though. There might be some reason why you can't take it that doesn't apply to me, and I wouldn't know about it. This article is of some interest although it does not deal exclusively with nail-biting : www.trich.org/dnld/NACarticle_InTouch55_rev.pdf

i dont shower every day either. for me its an every other day thing but the good part is i do shave during every shower and wash my hair. i dont wear makeup at all. i did when i was a teen but heck i wasnt very pretty then and im not any prettier now and no amount of makeup is going to hide that fact! i shower at night because im not able to get up early enough to do this before work. i mean i get up and i put on clean clothes and brush my hair and teeth put on deoderant but having the time to shower means i would have to get up at least 30 mins earlier and i just cant seem to do that. and thats another thing. even tho i hate working sometimes i have to say that without it id prolly be sitting in my nightgown all day every day. having to work makes me get up and dressed every morning. makes me brush my teeth and hair you know? because on the weekends everything goes downhill for me!! so i still have personal squalor. because first off im overweight. and yeah ive lost a little bit (im down 22lbs) but i have a loooong way to go. and even tho my hair is clean it desperately needs a cut and style. right now i just wear it in a ponytail. looks plain and not very nice. my teeth are horrible. oh i brush them every day but i dont floss. i have floss i just dont do it. and i dont have all my teeth either. ive had many in the back that have been pulled. i have some gingivitus too. im going to try that shower pik because i think that might really help me and hubby too!!! thank you Notahappycamper for posting that link!!! we have dental insurance but even with it everything is still very expensive. and to be totally honest even if all dental work was free id prolly not go too much cause im afraid of the dentist. dont like going to the doctor either. so things i should be doing like maybe trying something new for my anxiety isnt going to happen if i cant even make myself go to the doctor.

Daily showers or baths aren't really necessary for everyone. There are circumstances where more frequent bathing is desired, such as living and working in circumstances that produce a lot of body odor. But for the sedentary person in a mild climate, who doesn't produce a lot of offensive body odor, daily showers or baths are not really necessary.
Frequent bathing is the result of indoor plumbing, easily heated water, and an apparent abundance of water. In areas where water usage is restricted or availability is limited, people just don't shower as frequently.
In hospitals where I worked, bed baths were every other day. Many doctors recommend the elderly limit showers to every other day, interspersed with daily cleansing of the face, under skin folds, auxiliaries (armpits) and perineal area, particularly if odor is present. Of course hand washing is indicated before preparing foods, eating & after toilet use. In some countries the bidet is commonly used, but is less common in the U.S., although the sitz bath is commonly used in hospitals in the U.S. and would work just as well at home.
For a fact, I know that I went 12 days once without a shower or bath because I was on a hiking trip that lasted 12 days. Neither my husband nor I got sick from lack of bathing, although after having fresh salad, the thing I wanted most was a shower. But the fresh salad was the first thing I wanted.

My uncle is a geologist who traveled and lived all over the world for extended periods of time. He pointed out to me a few years ago that if all I'm doing is sitting in air conditioning, if I'm not doing work where I'm getting dirty, I don't need to bathe daily. It wastes water. They bathe about once a week, unless they do something to get dirty. I was shocked at first, but really, it makes sense.
Now, I'm afraid I don't bathe as often as I should. I do "sponge off" frequently, but sometimes have just been too busy/exhausted/depressed to shower.
I was thinking about some of the posts here last night. I have not been sleeping very well, and forgot chamomille tea at the store last night, so I took an aspirin, and a hot shower with some really nice smelling shower gel, gave my feet a good soak and scrub, and I did at least feel better going to bed.

When I was growing up a bath & shampoo were a usually just a once a week thing. But every night before bed we would brush our teeth and then use a wash cloth & soap to clean all the bits of ourselves that needed cleaning. Some days Granma would hand us a bar of soap and tell us to go jump in the lake. Out in the country with having to heat water on the stove, fill and then empty a big metal bin, this is the way everybody stayed clean. Granma said that in the "old" days females only washed their hair every month or longer using something called "tar soap".

I had a really hard time making myself go, too. I knew that when I went, the doc would ask what was bothering me today (the usual question) and there was no way I was going to be able to express everything that I needed to. First, because there was so much wrong after neglecting myself for such a long time I feared I wouldn't remember it all, and second, I felt that after I mentioned a thing or two, he would start talking and the rest I would leave unsaid. So, in a genius moment I spent some time making a list. From head to toe; physical, mental, emotional; scary stuff (depression/anxiety/panic attacks) to just bothersome stuff (skin tags). It was a long list! Then I put everything in order from what was bothering me the most to the least, made a copy for the doc and kept one for myself. The day of my appointment, when I got in my car, I had a panic attack. I must have looked like I'd lost my marbles, because I was laughing at myself at the timing as well as crying, shaking, and hyperventilating. When I finally got to see the doc, he indeed asked what brought me in to the office today, and I said, well, I made a list, and I handed it to him. Best thing I ever did. As he read it, he asked me questions, and since I had also made notes on my list, I could refer to it and tell him what he needed to know without blanking out or panicking. Stuff like all my depression symptoms, how long my arm had been hurting, date of last period, all that sort of stuff. Because I did that, all my problems were addressed and he got all the information he needed without me freaking out

I don't shower every day, either. Usually every other day. One of the good things about showering or bathing before going to bed is that your sheets stay cleaner.
