My posts in this thread now make me cringe. So much stress. It has been years since last I had to Crisis Clean. I have Guest Cleaned, but that is not the same. Is my home perfect? Not by a long shot. Laundry gets a week of back up, my room is better with a closed door, the walk in closet/room makes me cringe, and the floors usually need attention. But, to me, this is all within acceptable living range. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it's not an oncoming train.
Getting to whatever stage you consider maintenance is possible. Few of us will ever have magazine ready homes, we just aren't wired that way. But by slowly adding good habits, we can have pleasant, welcoming, relatively tidy homes-- even if we do shut a few doors. Just keep purging and defend your progress. Learn to pick up as you go and get dishes and laundry under control. One thing I had to do was get EVERYTHING in the bathroom put away. We don't even leave out tooth brushes. The bathroom is BARE!! I know it seems extreme, but I had to acknowledge that I can't control bottles and products. It's better for me to just put everything away, rather than to try to live with limits. Besides, it makes it much easier to clean. Knowing my limits is a vital part of maintaining maintenance.
As for habits, after you do something enough times, it really does become sediment one nature. I was having trouble sleeping so I wandered into the kitchen for a drink at 2:00 am, while I was there I unloaded the dishwasher. It took less than 5 minutes and I was already awake. The main habit I have established is "do something while you're there"
The common areas of the house stay within 15 minutes of company ready, and for me, that's good enough.

There is clutter and there is filth. There is clutter and there is a legal hazardInspectors and service people know the difference. Are all the exits that need to be accessible accessible? Is any rotting food and/or empty food/beverage containers, the "filthy trash" out of the house, especially the kitchen? Are all of the bathroom fixtures accessible? Is all "filthy trash" off the floor/basin/tub? Those are the main goals that you are trying to achieve (and will achieve) if you follow Courageously's advice and "battle plan". Thank you for this! This is really, really helpful to me. I don't even want an organized apartment, but I do want to make sure I don't need to be worried about being evicted etc. Just cleaning the filthy trash is a lot quicker and easier than going through all my clothes etc.
