I like the idea of putting the necklace in talcum powder or baby powder for a week. Actually baby powder is often made of cornstarch nowadays. That might absorb the odor and cover the odor with the scent of the powder.
Or maybe you could spray a cloth with air-freshener or febreeze, and put the jewelry and cloth in a plastic bag for a few days?

I buried the necklace in ground coffee yesterday, in the box. I threw out the inside padding of the box in case that had locked in the smells. I'll check it later today. We're due for sunny weather, I'll leave it outside for a few hours. I can blow it out with compressed air to get the coffee grounds off.
This really teaches me a lesson. You have to check the crafter for smoking, period. I didn't even watch for it. I only know one person still smoking. Obviously, there are millions. We don't see them as much out in public, we forget they exist. My smoking friend's car smells like an ashtray all the time.
