"The intent is for each participant to get 2013 items out of her/his home during the year 2013.
Count the items any way you wish."

Thought I'd start this thread since I ended it last year. I have 2013 items plus 300 more (carried over) so here I go 2313 items left to go

Hi ramatama, I was looking at the shelves in my bathroom and thinking that it was too bad that June was so far away (I think it's June that we devote to throwing things out?). Then I saw your 2013 items thread, and decided that I'll participate this year!
I looked back at last year's thread to see what kind of things people counted, and see that everyone makes their own rules for their particular situation, so here are mine: I won't count anything that would have been thrown away anyway (like food packaging or plastic bottles) but I WILL count every piece of paper that I get rid of, assuming that I had once decided to keep it or to store it until I could decide if I was keeping it or not.
Counting every piece of paper will make it add up quickly but that's okay, since I still have a few containers of saved paper that it would be great to get rid of!
Thanks for starting this thread ramatama, I think it will help me a lot--I'll get started tonight and come back and report.
Diane

Thanks for the 2013 Reboot Ramatama! You did a great job last year! Diane, I did almost the same thing last year; I didn't count stuff that I would have thrown out anyway. Instead of counting the papers I decided to count 'bundles of papers' as in, if I spent the day decluttering and filled a paper bag with things to recycle I counted it as one. Boy was that a mistake! I'm sure I got to 2012 more than once, but since I might have counted 100 old paystubs, 50 insurance statements, 10 appliance manuals to things I don't have anymore, 200 student loan bills, and a dozen coupon pages as only one thing I fell way short! This year I'm planning to count it the same way you've described! 2013 1 plastic dish from the bowels of the fridge (amnesty!) 2012 left to go!

Hi tiggy! Papergrace, yes, I think it will be more motivational to count each piece of paper, since sometimes I have to read each one and agonize over whether it should go or not! I just did a quick look through my bathroom shelves and found: 2 boxes from contact lenses I was saving for the prescription info 1 tin of expired ibuprofen 1 card of expired sinus medication 1 tube of expired cat eye ointment 1 facial cleaning item I will never use 3 old contact lens cases 1 travel toothbrush, past its prime 2013 minus 10 = 2003 to go I actually went through my bathroom cabinets for the last June purge, so these are all "new" items to get rid of. Since I've purged a lot of stuff during the last few years, some of the stuff I get rid of will be fine-tuning--going over places I already purged. That's why I'm counting every piece of paper! Oh, and for books, I'll only count books that I intended at one time to keep and read--not books I got for other people, or to trade. That was another purge I did this last summer, so I shouldn't find too many of those either.... Diane

I just threw away 13 things. Only 2000 to go!
The hardest were 2 little shells with holes drilled in them that were used in VBS as jewelry and a flint that was a bad arrowhead attempt--there are huge caches of these around here. I tossed them into my rock border instead of into the trash which made me feel better

Hi Ramatama, Diane, PaperGrace and Charis!
Read a bit of last years and also what you've said Diane and PaperGrace and I think I'll not count the daily trash I normally throw away as I've got that to be pretty much routine now. Paper - piece by piece I think - there's a lot of it! Books - ooh that's a hard one, I start hyperventilating at the thought of getting rid of my books, but they need culled so that'll be individually counted. Clothing and other stuff for donations I'll count by the bag.
I know this is for the house, but I think I need to implement something similar at work - I'm self employed and drowning in paper, most of which I just need to sort and chuck.

ramatama, I hope you will consider amnesty on those 300 things from last year's challenge. Its kind of a game, right? an arbitrary number. You are not honour bound to finishing it. actually, by hanging on to those 300 things from last year, isn't that like hoarding them in a way? like unread newspapers from the year 2012? those 300 things are from 2012. they are out of date. get rid of them without doing them. Amnesty, friend.
If you do more than 2013 this year you can just claim bonus points!

20 papers and 13 small old decorative/misc. items--purse mirrors, cat magnet, plastic puzzle piece, etc.
2003 minus 33 = 1970 to go

7 paperback books without covers, 35 Workbasket magazines from 1956, 20 cans of paint/black top filler. That leaves me with 1,951 to go.

This sounds like fun. I'll play. Can you count stuff you'd have to throw out anyway, e.g. can a soup can be an item?

Never mind, I had someone on the phone and only half read the topic. I see now--no soup (cans) for me!
