The last month has been sooooo busy! We had my mother-in-law visit for a week from Denmark. My husband and I each had days off work, but also worked some of it. I am thankful that she had a room to stay in at my mother's house so we didn't have the same chaos at night and in the early mornings as the last time she came 3 years ago. Kids started back to school 6 weeks ago. I am still trying to get used to this new schedule. So far I haven't had too much time to myself on my days off. The first 3 weeks of September my dad was here just about every day that I was off work, trying to finish the bathroom reno (before MIL came.) My daughter with Down Syndrome and Autism has been making life stressful. She is having lots of problems with her behaviors at school, that are escalating much more than last year. Unsafe behaviors that can cause harm to her, her teacher or other students. I never know if she's going to get on the bus to go to school. Or if she will ride the bus in a happy mood and then decide she's not getting off for them and come back home. Or if they will call me at the end of the day to let me know that she is refusing to get on. And then add in the 2-3 times a week calls from my son's school. He's in Kindergarten this year. Seems he hits his head every other day and they have to report it. He has a hard head and he is very accident prone! But when I just see the name of the school district calling, I never know if it's his school or hers. Or possibly the 10 year old. She is keeping me busy with trying to schedule violin lessons. She decided she wanted to be in the orchestra and do violin but of course the teacher says, "she will most likely need lessons to keep up." Then put 4 weeks of choir on top of that with practices after school twice a week. My head is spinning trying to keep up with all of them. Then my house is suffering because I am either working, running them or just trying to rest. My health has taken a back seat, but now my arthritis in my knees is soooo bad! I went to the doctor a week ago because I was limping so much with massive pain, greater than any I have ever had in my left knee. She wants me to go to physical therapy which I am laughing at, trying to figure out how I would work it into our schedule. And not to mention the $25 copay for each visit. I am just trying to take it easy. I took vicodin that she prescribed the first few days but that caused other internal (uh-hem backup) problems. Stress is pretty high right now. We seem to keep having things come up that require money. The latest and largest cost is our furnace. It seems to have died and we realized 2 weeks ago when it was cold and I wanted to use the heat. We had a company come out and tell us what was wrong. Definitely not going to pay $1500 to repair a 14 year old furnace. I was not thrilled my husband called this company though. My brother-in-law insisted his friend come check it out. He confirmed the problem and can replace furnace for $2,000. But he works on cash only basis. No thanks! We have Sears coming tonight. And I know it's going to cost a little more, but I feel better about them coming and knowing what kind of service we will receive. And then I can charge it because that's my only option. New furnace, new washer & dryer and my husband begged and pleaded and finally got a new computer after he insisted his would not work. So can you say "Merry Christmas?" WELL ....I do need to get something done today. I am feeling horrible and would rather just stay in bed. But all 3 kids are home, in-service day for teachers so 3 day weekend. And with Sears coming at 7 pm tonight, I need to tidy the main area (which isn't too bad.) But I really need to tend to some seriously neglected laundry. Of course I am not good on my feet long and can't sit long either. I also have let our bills and check book slack for the last 4 weeks. TA DAFed 3 kids Fed me Bathed 1 kid Stripped DS daughter bed & remade Picked up pullups she tossed NEXT to trash can and picked up poo she threw in room too Unload dishwasher & load - 10 yo help 10 yo pick up a slew of trash in family room (mostly 5 yo's tissues which never seem to make it to trash) Sorted paperwork on desk --- pulled out all bills and receipts Install WIFI at daughter's computer TO DOPick up in living room -- this is general .... mostly backpacks, shoes, clothing, newspapers Organize receipts by date & enter in check register Balance checkbook Go over rest of month's budget & pay bills Register Sears account online - so bill can be paid Sort clean clothes in bedroom for folding Start folding clean clothes Sort dirty clothes for washing Start washing clothes Empty kitchen trash Empty kitchen recycle Take boxes on stove to recycle Empty desk recycle

Yikes MamaAngie You do have your hands full. I can so relate. I have 4 children also and 1 of them has Prader-willi syndrome. There's lots of stubborn behavior with that one along with all of the other difficulties. I do feel for you.

Hello, I just realised the title of your thread really sums it up.. With three children, including a special needs child, each step is a win.
Working with students similar to your daughter I can understand the challenges faced by you and the family on a daily basis. Some days keeping your own sanity and staying safe are far more important and challenging than keeping-house.

MamaAngie . I hope you get a decent quote on a new furnace. And thank goodness your dm has room for dmil to stay. I don't know how you do it - please take care of that knee as best you can. Thanks hollyhock. Well we are brrrrr cold here still!! It hasn't gotten super cold at night but the house is about 64 or 66 when I wake up in the morning. We went through Sears. It is going to be an investment we will be paying on for many years. But financing is the way we needed to go. And I feel better knowing we will have annual maintenance checkups with them and not worrying about going through some company that may not be in business or do quality work. Sears of course contracts out and I thought I would have heard from the place yesterday to set up the appointment. But guess I will need to email our Sears contact person today. I am so thankful my mom has extra room in her house. It is a 4 bedroom house, but only 2 bedrooms really. The master and then a guest room. One room is mom's crafting/stamping room and the other is a TV room/play room for the grandkids. If she has someone in the guest room, 1 or 2 grandkids can sleep in their as the small sofa makes out to a sleeper. I know my MIL was much more comfortable having her own space and even a private bathroom. And I was more comfortable not having her here all the time. Working on the knee. I seem to be back to about the place I was before it got super bad. So just doing ice/heat when I can, Aleve and not walking lots. Stairs are the hardest, which I have to tackle at the very end of my work day. But it's just up once and then down.

Working with students similar to your daughter I can understand the challenges faced by you and the family on a daily basis. Some days keeping your own sanity and staying safe are far more important and challenging than keeping-house. You are so right notanotherdecade . Just staying sane each day is a win. Today I was on the losing side a bit unfortunately. She just decided she was not getting out of the car at school today. We did change up the routine a bit, car instead of bus. But we did this on Tuesday also. I had my middle child to get to choir before school this week, rather than after due to early release/conferences. Of course it messed up the busing for my special needs daughter and my kindergartner. Alas she was in a mood when we got in the car .... throwing shoes and backpack at the other kids. By the time we left middle dd's school, 18 yo special needs and 5 yo are having a screaming contest. He wants to sit in the front seat of the car. I say no, and he screams. Then she screams. So when we got to her school, she took a big fat pass on getting out and going to school. Of course this meant I couldn't drive him to his school because he needs to be walked into class if he doesn't ride the bus. *sigh* Also had to email middle dd's teacher and cancel conference for the day. Not going to get my special needs daughter to go into a strange school with us. Oh well --- I wasn't super excited about a conference. We'll probably do a phone one. Well I am going to tackle something in the house today. It looks like the kitchen exploded.

Hi MamaAngie . Good to see you. And Yay! for 'Thing 2's' help. I hope you got a nap. I assume you still work those weird (insane) hours. Thanks hollyhock . Actually I have been working days for over a year now. But life is still hectic. I sleep decent enough on work days. I have Thurs-Sat off though and some days I just need a nap. Funny ... last week I was staying up until 11:00 or 12:00 and then getting up at 5:00 or 6:00. Soooo tired but then get busy and never nap. Naps are GOOD!!! Today I am not getting one either and could really use it. My kids have early release. So they are home in less than 3 hours. I just have too much to do. If I nap, then the day is over! I won't do anything.
