Does anyone else have this problem? I've had it from little after the Proboard update, so quite a few months now. Problem: If I use smileys and later edit that post, each time I edit the BBCode editor adds extra spaces on both sides around the smileys. If I edit 4 times it adds 4 times extra spaces, on both sides of each smiley. The same phenomenon happens if I swich from BBCode to Preview mode and back to BBCode, without hitting "post" button in between. This problem is only visible at the BBCode writing/editing view and the actual post (and preview) looks normal. Only smileys that are in written code behave like this, e.g basic works normally. (I actually remembered that ALL smileys would do this, but I just tested few in my blog - not all of them, mind you - and looks like only those written code ones do this.) This wouldn't be a big problem if I would only write posts which I would never edit or only edit once or twice, but since many of my posts are lists I keep for a longer time periods and edit them sometimes several times per day, it certainly has become a problem so big I actually avoid using smileys on my lists. That's why I have been, instead of and (etc) started to use written indicators STARTED and DONE. When I have already long and complex lists, they become progressively harder and harder to use/read the more times I edit my list. I haven't tested them all but the ones I have been using (which are in written code :: word :: ). The same thing happens with single smiley, as when there are several (2 or more) in a row. I would really love using the smileys again in my lists, especially the check marks. In the beginning when this problem started, I tried erasing the extra spaces each time I edited, but that took a lot of time and was frustrating. I will take some screenshots to show what I am experiencing, and will post them on this thread in a while. Oh and since someone is going to ask anyway, I have Windows Vista and use Firefox browser, always the latest version. I use both BBCode and Preview modes. I use Stepping out! skin and the BBcode mode is my defaul one. I have not really tested if changing the setting/skins would make any difference. TEST lines of smileys:

yes me too. exactly the same I use windows 7 99% of time i post in firefox, and i keep my firefox updated to whatever latest version is (currently 25) Ladybug skin I do occasionally use I.E. 8 or opera-whatever-latest-version-is or Chrome-whatever-latest-version-is (i keep them all up-to-date) but i rarely edit from those browsers, and don't have time to check today.. I use both BBCode and Preview modes. Preview is my default but i go into BBCode to edit and then back to preview to check how it will look ------- edit to add CLARIFICATION,as OnTheMend said ... the POSTED version looks FINE. But the appearance ON THE EDITING SCREEN looks weird and THERE is where it's hard to see what's where. P.S. I just tried quoting OnTheMend's post (clicked on the quote button) and the "composing" screen came up with same issue -- large spaces between the checkmark codes and normal spaces between the smileyface codes. I didn't bother to submit the quoted post, because it would appear normal in posting. But if you have firefox, you can click the quote button on Mendy's post, then go into BBCode, and see what the composing screen looks like.

I haven't tried to do this in a while but I when I made a list with a bunch of: Work in the kitchen for 15 minutes. Then I'd go back and try to change the first to a I'd end up with all types of weird things going on. I haven't tried it recently, but I know exactly what you mean.

Yep. Me too. I'm not sure there is a solution at this point, apart from composing in a text file first. I can ask about it, however. Testing something. Edited to add: I think it may be only the smilies in the extra smilies dropdown box that are adding spaces. Does someone want to test it with me?

read post about testing smilies test smiley from dropdown list start reply test smiley from View all smilies list wonder why the word is spelled "smilies" in "View all smilies" and "Smileys" in the list that appears when that link is clicked test typing the text in manually Editing. Because editing is fun. Editing again. And... It seems to be happening for me no matter how the code arrives. Editing yet again. Yep. Now up to four spaces bracketing the double colons.

wonder why the word is spelled "smilies" in "View all smilies" and "Smileys" in the list that appears when that link is clicked Because that is the way Todge, the plugin's developer, spells it.

... So we should just be glad they didn't decide to spell it "silly images"?

Default smiley box Extra smiley box One edit Two edit Three edit Four edit Five edit On the fifth edit, the laughing smiley in the extra smilies dropdown has spread the line to the point that the text appears on the next line down. The laughing smiley in the default list remains as it did when the post was created. Conclusion: it is the smiley plugin that is adding the spaces with each additional edit.

... So we should just be glad they didn't decide to spell it "silly images"? Yes, or we'd have "silly images" instead of "smilies" or "smileys".

Testing Reply screen, default Testing Reply screen ... One ringydingy Two ringydingies Three ringydingies Ayuh, bigwave seems to be solidly spaced, but bliss gets more spaced out with each edit. (Chalk that up as "sentences I never expected to write, number 634".)

Looks like I'll have to take up this issue with Todge. (We've already grilled him on the "smilies/smileys" spellings!)
