I've been married for 36 years. And I'm a word person. Every piece of paper has meaning. Now that I'm 58 and have Internet access, not so much. But I have 36 years of papers! My son told me I can get on top of them, because there is a finite number of papers in this house. In theory, he's right. But my husband said, "Not in OUR house!", and I suspect he's right.
I emptied our four-drawer filing cabinet. Another friend wants it. I filled two grocery sacks full of stuff I think I can find on the Internet if I ever really want it. Those were recycled. I filled a bin with the rest. Which is my M.O. I make piles of papers, and then when I need to clean quickly I stuff them in boxes and bins. I have dozens of large containers full of papers everywhere. And even more piles.
Here's my report: I mentally chose and numbered six of the bins/boxes. I threw a die. I took that bin out and started sorting/tossing. I'm getting rid of 80% without too much effort. You know, stuff like 10 year old cable TV bills. I'm recycling or shredding most of it. The other 20% I couldn't be quick on, so it's in another container. Yeah, I know. But this is still 80%. When the bin is empty I'll give it to my daughter who is moving at the end of the month. And then there will be a tiny bit more space in my house!
