Here are some prior threads worth reading while you desqualor.
Also good for reading when you feel emotionally stuck.
Or when your body is hurting and you cannot clean, read these! Some are stories of digging out of deep squalor. Others are stories of achieving maintenance. Kimmy's story is in several parts, so I will give you links to the whole thing. Kimmy was the first person in the history of the universe to post on the internet about her squalor and recovery. And from that first thread (on a former forum) was born the idea for the website Squalor Survivors. Kimmy's first post was on May 20, 2001, North America time or May 21, 2001, Australia time. --------------------------------------------------- Part TWO: Here is the continuation of the Third Degree thread on Julie Morgenstern. It includes Kimmy's reaction to her house inspection. (Another 7 pages)
Link you can copy/paste into messages to yourself, but note that Kimmy's story is COPYRIGHT to her. Copy all these pieces into a single line

Oh, Lion I was so thrilled and grateful that you shared my post about maintenance. I had to go back and reread that whole thread. I encouraged myself!
I've been back (in chat) for 3 days. Things are already beginning to look good.

Well, I wasn't sleepy, didn't want to watch TV, and to tired to do much housework. I went to chat and did a 15 minute challenge.
I wanted to continue with maintenance in mind. I did sweep about 12 hours ago. Living in the country with 4 dogs, 3 cats, and my #1 DD's 6 horses, I could sweep this house (no carpet in this house) twice a day! So, I did a quick and general sweeping. Believe me when I tell you I did find more dust bunnies. I picked up some clutter and either threw it away or put it where it needed to go. Those clutter things have been there for weeks and months. Tomorrow when I wake up, they will NOT be there.
My MIL home is always clean and tidy. She will say, "Oh no it's not". Okay maybe she needs to dust! But things are always in their place. Over the years I've seen what she does. She does it with no fuss, quietly and without a word. She takes care of spills right away, throws away trash, cleans as she goes about her cooking, she takes something out to use it and when she is finished with it, she puts it back where it belongs.
I on the other hand leave spills for days, start projects and leave the stuff for days and weeks after I have finished said project, I don't always clean as I cook (I have gotten much better at this).
Maintenance is what I long for. It's not gonna happen over night. It happens when I pick something up and put it in it's HOME or throw it away.
I eat every day, I need to do maintenance every day. I use the bathroom every day, I need to do maintenance every day. I wear clothes every day, I need to do maintenance every day.
Maintenance is EVERY day. Life is so much easier when I do maintenance EVERY day. If I'm breathing, I need to do maintenance EVERY day.
Laundry never ends, feeding myself and my family never ends, washing dishes never ends, MAINTENANCE never ends.
Helen, remember, maintenance is another word for EVERY DAY!

I have a blog here if anyone is interested in sharing my ongoing progress, highs and lows, and honest feelings about overcoming squalor. It's called Cleverly Disguised as a Middle-aged Woman . This is such an interesting time in my life as I feel a bit displaced and working through my squalor to find myself again.
