I'm still here, but barely. I've canned all weekend and washed up before, in between and after two separate rounds yesterday. I have one more batch that is ready for me as soon as I go get cans and get them washed up and then I will be done for a few days. The kitchen is a wreck, even though all dishes, pots and pans are clean, so I need to take some time to put all the odd things away, take out the trash, sweep and all that good stuff. All that canning is wonderful!! Great job on keeping the regular dishes and cookware cleaned!!!

I'm barely managing, too, imamess. I'm so incredibly fatigued as our 5 month busy season is finally winding down this week, the dishes are about the only thing getting done and my heart is definitely not in it. I am managing a few other things in the evening, but haphazardly, and my morning routine is all messed up all of a sudden this week. And the heat has been kicking my butt. But I did load and will prob run the dw tonite.

I'm drooping from the heat here, too. I've been avoiding standing over a sink of hot dishwater, but... here I go...

It has cooled up here a little and is sprinkling rain. I washed a normal meal's worth of dishes tonight. It was really nice, just a few plates, bowls, spoons, forks, a serving bowl and a skillet and two glasses. I have almost everything put back in place and just 8 more jars of pickle to put away in the morning.
Turkeyhill, when I can, I have to keep everything clean and scrubbed since I only have a preparation space of about 12 inches by 18 inches plus the sinks and stove. I have a place to put hot cans to cool, but it is not used as a prep area. My kitchen is tiny; my house is tiny. If the house were any bigger, it would just be in a bigger mess. Gardening is a lot of work, but it is something I can do that reduces our grocery bills, is heathlier and much more nutritious and it can be done in little spurts, in the cool of the mornings and when I rest, I can check on DH. He has not been able to go to the garden, which is only 60 feet from the house, in 4 years. When he went outside today, I got him settled down and went to the garden and pulled weeds for a little while. Every little bit helps in the war on weeds, just like in the house wars.

A few minutes later...
All dishes and pans are washed and air-drying in the rack. Dish sponges are disinfected (zapped in the microwave). Sink is shined and wiped dry.
... all well worth a brief moment of discomfort. Now there's a cool evening breeze kicking in, so I'll go out for a walk as my reward.

Jannie WTG on having a method that works for you! wynken WTG on self-care! Dishes washed and kitchen almost clean! I've been hitting the kitchen a little bit late each night when it's cool. Today wasn't so bad heat wise so I made more progress with things like picking up change off the floor.

imamess That is awesome your dh was able to go to the garden! I admire your hard work and keeping up with the extra that canning requires. papermoon WTG zapping the sponges! I always pour the extra boiling water from my tea, I hope that works!

turkeyhill, I had to tweak the microwave settings to be sure I didn't burn the sponges. 2 minutes works fine for my brand of sponges, but different types of sponges may need a different setting. Just don't start a fire! The microwave seems to be best because the sponges are dried while being exposed to germ-killing mega-heat. Germs love moist environments. Boiling water doesn't kill them all, alas, but it leaves a damp breeding ground for the sturdiest germs to propagate. Check this out: www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2007/070423.htm

My hands were so swelled this morning after drilling and cutting some metal for DH that I couldn't even hold a coffee cup in my right hand. By late this afternoon, I finally managed to go to the garden to gather produce, start supper and run dishwater. By the time the meal was ready, the backlog of dishes had been washed, and I finished everything after supper.

Thanks Wynken, for the healing thoughts. I can type this morning, I could barely manage the computer yesterday. At least the dishes are washed and today I can focus on decluttering the flat surfaces in the kitchen. My dd and family are coming Sunday, so that means at least one large meal and masses of dishes to wash. I love her, but I do not love all the extra work and dishes.
