So glad to see you post Ponygirl. I had to catch up a bit on your thread. How are you doing with the new med now? I hope the symptoms have evened out for you.

Pony, I thought about you last week as I was sweeping out my barn feed room. I don't think it had been cleaned in 40 years or more. I have filled about eight feed bags of hay trash, dust, old medicine bottles & syringes, old rusted metal thingies that I can conceive of no possible use to them, etc., etc. It took two days and I still have not fastened the tops of the sacks and taken them to the dump, but maybe today.

Thanks, y'all, for missing me! I've been meaning to get back to SooS for SO long! I miss you, too. I'm okay. A little bit of health concerns (sciatica) has been a battle, and I've simply been overwhelmed with work and the ranch. Can't seem to find a good balance; but, I keep trying! I've made some progress in the hoard and am working on it daily. I really need to get back here and spend some time telling you what has been working for me. Sending love and hugs! I'll try to find some time to write a LONG post soon!

Amongst everything else going on in my life lately...when I took a week of vacation in April, I burned over 60 bags of stuff! Horse feed size bags! I was on a roll. I've read a couple of books lately that have truly inspired me to carry on and de-hoard. One of them is 'The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up' by Marie Kondo. You may have heard of the 'KonMari' method of decluttering/downsizing? Well, let me tell you...it WORKS! The gist is...and...I've been saying this all along myself, here in this thread and to myself!!!...that decisions must be made...and the basis for making decisions about EACH item is 'does this item spark joy for me?'. It really is that simple. You must be honest with yourself and Marie strongly suggests following a specific order of attack (clothing first, followed by books...and the rest of the order is in the book) designed from her experience with what order best works ... all to hone your decision making. I highly recommend the book. Although I cannot do 'KonMari' exactly in the recommended order, it works even by my piece-meal attack. The book is a short read, but very concise. The author is straight-forward and doesn't pull any punches. There are no 'maybe I should keep this'...either the stuff does or does not spark joy. The truth. My kinda gal. Tells it like it is. I'm on my third read, just for re-affirmation. Try it. You'll see! Best of luck to everyone as we continue to dig out.

The Marie Kondo book has been talked about on several threads this summer. I really had my doubts, I guess because there is really very little that gives me joy now, but if you recommend it, I may just have to read it.

imamess, I had trouble with the "joy" thing too. Then read somewhere else, a personal blog, that it can be easier to experience a little lift, kind of a sharpening of interest or a little spark of excitement. It can be very subtle which is partly why it is recommended to do the sorting in silence and alone. Even with depression, I have been able to discern a little lift or a little "nope" sensation.

The Marie Kondo book has been talked about on several threads this summer. I really had my doubts, I guess because there is really very little that gives me joy now, but if you recommend it, I may just have to read it. Ima, I know I missed all of those threads; but, I suspected with the popularity of the book that it had been discussed somewhere here! As with all 'self-help' guides, I had my doubts, too...until I read it. Wow. It really struck me that THIS is the key! The 'joy sparking'. It truly does cover everything. Everything. I got it very cheaply in e-format, as I now have 'smart' devices required by my work. This is so great because I can read at lunch and breaks without lugging a book around. Another revelation for me! Yeah, I know...I'm late to the 'e-party'! Again, as with every other 'method', it takes effort...true down and dirty effort. There is no easy way for 'us'. Nothing will work if we don't try something. What Marie says about handling one item at a time, and doing the categorization are the two main keys. For instance, one might be working on 'komono' (miscellaneous)...and one might be into the pens category...well, handle each one...does it write? No? Well, that darn sure is no joy-sparker, even if one was awarded the pen for some specific project! Does it feel right in the hand? No? Gone pecan...no joy in that sucker. These are just a couple of examples, but you get the idea. It doesn't hurt to try! It's working for me.
