imamess, I had trouble with the "joy" thing too. Then read somewhere else, a personal blog, that it can be easier to experience a little lift, kind of a sharpening of interest or a little spark of excitement. It can be very subtle which is partly why it is recommended to do the sorting in silence and alone. Even with depression, I have been able to discern a little lift or a little "nope" sensation. Angela, as you know, I've been battling depression for a long time, so you know that I know how difficult it is to discern the 'truth'. I tell ya, this truly works if you give it a chance. I don't follow 'straight-up Konmari'...but it's still working (meaning: I'm jumping from category to category because I have so much that it would be nearly impossible to gather all the clothing into one place...heck, if I had that much space, I probably wouldn't be in the cycle I'm in!) Definitely do the sorting in silence and alone (pets okay, imho...just no humans or radio/tv/et al...and no jumping back and forth into online forums). You must handle each item and determine (make a decision!) whether it sparks joy or not. There are no maybes. It either does or doesn't. I've known this all along, WAY before I ever heard of 'joy sparking' from Marie Kondo! However, something in the way she writes struck a chord and gave me another push. At this point in my life, I was darn sure willing to try it! I've been doing a whole lot of burning and donating. Really making some dents. I can actually walk into one (yeah, I have more than one) of the rooms of 'storage" (aka: junk...stuff not being used/needed), where I could not just months ago. Real progress. I have so much (don't we all?). What you will discover...as you hone your joy-discovering skills...is that there are way more non-joy sparkers than joy-sparkers...which is great...because we need to de-possess...not hold onto (hoard). Best of luck to everyone discovering their joy-sparkers!

Yay for being able to walk into your room! I managed to get rid of several pieces of clothes that I could not get in any more and DH's hats yesterday. They had little mold spots on them and I put them in the trash, since I could not donate them. I always hated those hats and the way they looked on him so that wasn't hard at all.

Thanks, y'all! It really is! imamess, atta girl!
One of the techniques that helps me a lot is to thank the item for the service it provided to me...or the 'lift' it gave me when I purchased it (retail therapy) even if I never used the item. Remember a long while back, earlier in this thread, I mentioned that I send a lot of things to the burn pyre with a kiss and a blessing? Well, lemme tell you...that was WAY before I ever heard of Konmari! I had found that technique on my own! Thing is, reading it in MK's book just solidified the method and, again, gave me another push to get on the right track and to make more progress.
As with equine/animal training...only one method is not the key to success...one must use all the tools in their box to train the individual.
So, whatever technique, or combo of techniques, helps us to dig out, I say, embrace it wholeheartedly, no matter how hokey it might sound!
We have to get in the mindset and have that 'click' moment when we understand...we cannot find peace within ourselves until we get to a true, peaceful environment.

KonMari is really working well for me. Completed my socks and underwear category, which wasn't a difficult one for me, and wow, what a difference. I'm left with probably less than 1/4 of what I had. Some of the reject socks I kept for rag use. The rest of purged socks and underwear are being burned. This is very freeing. Gives me hope for the rest. Good luck, everyone!

Thanks, angela! I sure do! It's really spurring me. That burn pile is a lifesaver! And to think...I was sending my things off with a kiss and a blessing on their new journeys to the burn pile...releasing their energies to other purposes...LONG before I ever heard of Marie Kondo! ;-)

Hi ponygirl! I'm a big user of burn piles too. Burning some of the items I no longer want from the house is a better choice at times, for me, than putting it in the dump. Burning is final, clean, ceremonial and leaves no traces. I'd rather burn some items than know they are mouldering and bug-infested at the dump.
Keep up the good work!

I agree completely with everything you said about burning, mynicehome! It's cathartic. I believe that it truly releases an item's 'energy' to go on to other purposes. Thank you, and you, too!!!

This...
'If you want to be successful, you must respect one rule: NEVER LIE TO YOURSELF.' ~Paulo Coelho~
I find that very compelling.

pony - glad to hear from you! i'm here for now because i am too sore to go to work. so... if you don't mind my asking, what kind of things do you burn? (this is not an option for me since i live in an apartment complex, but i am curious and maybe it can help other people with the ability to burn, in terms of what is burnable and what isn't.) WTG all konmari people~ whatever works, however it works, however many methods one needs to have it work. when i think of getting rid of my socks, i have many colored ones that i hardly use since i am a dirty gardener - but i love my colored socks! i guess i'd be more looking for which socks are uncomfortable or cut off my circulation... something to think about. since almost everything i own sparks joy in me, i'm not sure konmari would work for me, but i think i could utilize some of it anyway and be further along than i am now. probably wouldn't hurt to check out joyinvirginia's thread either. glad things are perking along for releasing!

First of all I am glad that you have found a method that works for you and that part of it you were already doing - thanking the item for the blessing and joy that it gave you when it came into and then to send it on its way with love. That's a wonderful idea, especially when the items are tougher to part with.
I enjoy reading your insights. I especially like the one about never lying to yourself. That's who most people lie to the most.
