I had a gift card for Home Goods that was burning a hole in my pocket. So on Wednesday I went shopping. I got a tall pretty seagrass basket, striped natural color and teal, about 2 feet high. I also got 3 aqua wire storage baskets ... so pretty!
So yesterday evening I removed about 80% of the cleaning supplies that I store normally under the kitchen sink (a hot mess!) and left only the ones I'll use in the kitchen. Then I loaded the new wire baskets with most of the cleaning supplies and moved them to another, more accessible shelf (but first I had to move a bunch of cookbooks to the library, and I still haven't found shelf space for those yet). The seagrass basket is now in the living room by the stairwell that goes down to the basement/library. Its function is to temporarily hold things that need to go downstairs. I've used other baskets there, but they are never big enough. The new basket is so pretty and tall enough so that I don't have to look at the crap piled up in it ... and at the same time, it's so pretty that I want to empty it regularly!

I'm basically anti-consumer at heart so I don't post here very often. I try hard not to buy unneeded things, or to persuade myself that I need something after all, just because I want it.
But yesterday I needed a new pair of socks so I went into the Gap and bought a nice pair using my Coinstar credit. I need them for my volunteer outfit. We have to dress in all black. My current black socks creep down at the heels into my shoes, and every 5 minutes I have to stop and pull them up. Don't you hate that?! I hope these new socks will behave!

ohblondie, could you unsubscribe to the e-mail list for right now? Just to keep yourself from temptation. You could resubscribe if and when you need more clothes. If they send coupons and such I'll bet they have the same offers on a website or Facebook page. That online looking can be very satisfying. One of the best tools I developed for non acquisition was to take pictures of something or to write it down in a little notebook. Somehow, my brain still registered it as "acquisition" and I got that nice "hit" even though I hadn't bought the thing. It was a way of honoring the fact that I liked something about the object and that it triggered my creativity and enjoyment while still helping me have more room to choose to not acquire the thing. Like you, with the clothing especially, playing in my closet and making up outfits is a sure way to prove to myself that I have enough clothes and NICE enough clothes to make all sorts of creative outfits. Really stops the boredom shopping for me. sharky, the things you bought sound really fun. That Beatles boxed set sounds like hours and hours of enjoyment. ______________ Acquisition accountability for me, I sold my older spinning wheel to my neighbor today plus she bought a pound and half worth of dyed wool. So with the wool sale, I am $25 to the good on the purchase of the newer wheel with the bulky flyer. I've been spinning LOTS on the new wheel and having a great time. I've spun with the bulky flyer attachment with good results and the standard flyer is working great too. I have several more bobbins now than I started with so I have more flexibility in my spinning. Right now I have filled two bobbins with fine weight yarn. I'll keep spinning fine singles and fill up the bobbins I have then make some choices about plying. I know I'm talking Greek here to those non-spinners among us. I apologize. If anyone ever wants a little definitional lesson, let me know. Other acquisition accountability, though I truly over-bought on clothes earlier this summer, when I do wear a nice outfit, I am really enjoying the clothes that I have available. Last Sunday for church I wore the cotton turquoise v-neck sweater I bought a couple of months ago, over the cream colored pima cotton, ribbon edged t-shirt. Accented with a turquoise and cream bead necklace that a friend sent me a couple of years ago. Yesterday I stopped at the Humane Society Thrift Store and bought two hardback books for $1.50 for both. Cool! I also bought a pair of red plastic knitting needles and some coral acrylic yarn. I have a few sets of knitting needles in this size and I get a real kick from matching the needles to the color of the knitting project. I have got a clear vision for using up a LOT of the acrylic yarns in my stash. The church I've been attending has a knitting group that makes lap blankets for cancer patients. The blankets need to be acrylic for easy washing. So I'm going to go through my yarn bins again and sort according to fiber, separating out the wool and mohair. Then I'll take the acrylics to the knitting group for people to choose from for their projects. Win/Win. Back to the books. I have realized that one of the reasons I got into so much trouble with excess possessions is that I was buying things WAY ahead of when I would actually be able to use them. So I bought the books because I want to read a book. Now. Like this weekend. I've planned my evening to sit and relax and read. See that, I've PLANNED to use the things I bought. I'll report back. Oh, and I'm releasing most of the unread books that are sitting on the little bookshelf in my bedroom. If I haven't read them yet, I won't.

chocolatetruffle, ooooo, I'm envying your basket and the storage bins. Pretty storage does make a difference in our motivation I believe. jeweltea, getting proper storage items can be a big help. Sometimes it's enabling us to keep things we don't need but some of us truly don't have enough storage or don't have the right storage for the things we need and use. papermoon, I hope those new socks work out!

More acquisition accountability. Those taupe corduroy pants I bought at Goodwill at 40% are MAGIC PANTS. I hope everyone here has the opportunity to own Magic Pants at some point.
They go with everything, they fit PERFECTLY, waist high enough, no back gap, exactly the right length, long pockets, not too tight at the waist nor too loose, hips not too tight not too loose....I would hoard more pairs of these pants if I came across more of them. I will be stalking this brand at the thrifts come fall.
So I wore them with the outfit described above and it looked great.

Angela, this! I collect mid-century tablecloths and a certain category of mid-century glassware. The thing is, it's easy to then start collecting similar category items, like mid-century tea towels, and dish sets, and on and on. I have been able to keep my collections in check by using Pinterest. I have many beautiful "collections" there far bigger than what would ever fit in my home.

I ordered a Spiralizer (for making "noodles" out of things like raw zucchini and cucumber and sweet potato). I do not follow a low carb diet, on the contrary I follow a vegan whole foods high starch and veggie diet and interested in a kitchen gadget to entertain me and shake things up for a bit. My plan is to keep it for a year, and then evaluate how much I have used and enjoyed it, and if it doesn't pass the test after one year then I will donate it to,the animal shelter thrift shop. Might need someone to remind me in 1 yr to do the evaluation

cleanbee, I really want one of those. I've seen large rather cumbersome versions for $20-$30. I've also seen small handheld versions for $15. Which did you buy?

I got the big $30 one from amazon. I don't have many kitchen gadgets and I've got plenty of storage and counter space In the kitchen, otherwise I definitely would have considered something smaller. I think it arrives today so I'll be able to give a report in the next couple days!
ETA: I have lots of storage space because I've gotten rid of/donated/ amnestied a LOT of stuff over the past few years, with the help and advice I've gotten right here at SOS

I was a bad girl today. I went out to lunch with my dearest friends and we went to two thrift stores. At the first I bought a jacket and a vest to make purses out of and a strange little resin tray painted to look like weathered metal. I will apply spray paint tomorrow and make a candle holder out of it. At the second, I wound up with 4 pairs of boots to make purses from, a tin box, 12 Christmas balls, a Christmas glass to complete my set, 4 quilted cotton placemats with barn and cow scenes on them, a knife sharpening steel for $.49 and for dd and dgd a tray, Halloween jello molds and a pull toy with a large tea set in it.

I got the big $30 one from amazon. I have one, and I think it's the same one. I love mine! I use it about twice a month, but I should really use it more.

There were lots of good reviews on amazon that it works well so I am encouraged. I eat a lot of veggies, mostly steamed and undressed, but want to incorporate more raw veggies in my diet that don't involve so much Choppong by hand and labor intensive chewing of raw veggie chunks. And I'm not a huge fan of the texture of wheat pasta or rice noodles so I like the idea of veggie "noodles" with a crunch...I'm excited to make things like pad thai or peanut sauce with noodles made from squash and cucumber. Yum

Ohmygosh, imamess!! You really were a bad girl! Are you regretting any of your purchases now? Will the store take back items? Our thrift store will do returns, but only for in-store credit.
