Acquisitions accountability: I wore the red cowl neck sweater this week to church. I thought it looked nice. It is quite comfortable and flattering. I need to work out my accessories for it though. I have some Christmas pins that would look nice but I have meant to put magnets on them and remove the pin part. I never like putting holes in garments, especially knits. Enjoying the "Fall Festival" scented jar candle. I have a Creme Brulee scent I will use next month. Dyed my hair tonight so used that box of hair dye I bought. I will get more next week. It is a really good shade for me and I am really happy with how it turned out. I also cut it tonight. My hair is much fresher looking. I haven't done any craft projects for a while so any craft supplies I buy are needless. I am having a hard time with this category. _____________ Today, another town errand day. I had forgotten to report acqusitions at the local grocery outlet store.. They often get other types of goods there and I have found some good stuff for cheap. I bought another pair of orthodic style shoe inserts. This way I can have a set in each of my regularly worn shoes. Instead of having to switch the inserts back and forth. Unusual for me, but I bought a shaper cami undergarment. It's a "as seen on TV" brand it was cheap at $8. What caught my eye really is that it has a built in bra. And claims to smooth out the back bulges and other assorted flab. I tried it on tonight and really happy with it. The fabric feels good, it isn't too tight, nice wide straps, goes on easy, long enough to go all the way down my hips. It would make a great under layer for cold weather too. And yes, it does smooth out some of the jiggles. Doesn't displace the extra 15 pounds of belly like Spanx would but I'm glad it isn't as confining. It's very comfortable. I might get another one so I can trade off when I wash one. Bought an outfit at one of the cheapest thrifts. I don't usually find things there, but when I do, the price is about half that of Value Village or even Goodwill. So I got NEW taupe slacks. Good brand, wrinkle resistant. Still had the little stitches that hold the tag on the waistband. $5. Hooray. Then a really nice silk scarf. Diamond shapes of taupe, lime green, turquoise, on a teal ground. I know the brand, it is a lined scarf and probably cost a pretty penny new. $1 for me. And to complete the ensemble, a turquoise cotton cardigan, 3/4 sleeves. Good brand, good condition. $4. I put it all together with a lime green linen top that I've had for ages, with my new shaper underneath, and my newly dyed and cut hair, and hey, I actually could pass for normal! So I'll wear this all tomorrow. It might look a little work-ish, like I should be going to an office, but I honestly don't really know what counts for festive wear anymore. I certainly don't have anything in my closet. It'll be fine. Oh and more yarn, a bit of jute string, and a ball of vintage, teal, crochet cotton. To add to my "Still Life with String" tableau on my dresser top.

I saw an ad in a sale paper that was running from yesterday thru Saturday and they had just what I wanted to get sil at a fantastic price. Away I went & bought his present and the same thing for me plus a set of small squeeze clamps. I didn't need them, I just wanted them for occasional use only.

I bought a small gadget, a couple of rollers fastened together that you can use to squeeze out the last contents of a tube - it seems to be working, and much better than cutting open the plastic to access whatever remains.

jendela, tools that help you make full use of a product are good things I think. imamess, glad you found the gift you wanted for dear SIL. Those squeeze clamps, I have 2 large and 2 small and find them incredibly useful for all sorts of things. ______________ Accountability of purchases for this week. Wore the new clothing today except for the cardigan. I wore a teal tunic that I've had for 15 or so years. Every year, I think, hmm, time to go? And the answer has always been "no" you can stay. It shows no signs of wear (it's wool) and though I don't wear it often, when I do, it looks very nice. Love, love, love, the underwear shaper top. Easy to pull on. Important for me and my sore shoulders. Even though the bra part really has no bottom band, there seems to be no jiggle anywhere. It doesn't shape like a bra, but I really don't care. When I go back into town I'll see if there are any left and get 2 or 3 more. If I can get more, I'll toss the 3 pull over bras I have now, plus 2 cami style tops. New pants worked well. Snug but not too tight. Wrinkle resistant fabric with a bit of stretch. When I took them off and hung them up, they looked as nice as they did when I put them on. Teal crochet thread ball has joined the other vintage crochet thread balls on the dresser. The yarn is in with the other yarn. The embroidery floss is still in the bag, I'll take it out tomorrow and it can join the colorful pile on the little tray on my dresser. Haven't used the shoe spray yet. Need to have a little shoe day. Spray the suede shoes, polish the toes of my brown shoes. A little heel black for the black shoes. Forgot to report that I got a new--to-me DVD player from my brother. My old one died and bro had an extra so he passed this one on to me. Now to get it and the old VCR plugged in. _____________ I'm writing as much as I am about my acquisitions because I want to work on being accurate with my thoughts when I'm acquiring an item. To continue to check in with myself that I am "telling the truth" about why I want such and such thing. I think the next step for me is to ask, "do I already have something that can do the job?" Whatever that job is. So that even if I end up using the thing I've acquired, there is still a non-acquiring way to accomplish the task or fill the want. I know that I use the local thrift stores as escapist shopping. When I'm only going into town once a week, it feel like hooky day. I get my errands done, and I don't want to go home yet. I want to go look through things with novelty. As a bonus, most all of what I'm seeing is really cheap and I can get that lift of acquiring while still appealing to my bargain hunting nature. Which is really a part of me that likes to think I'm getting away with something by getting things so much cheaper than new, and perversely, allowing me to think that I am superior to the "suckers" that buy things new. That somehow, I've got the special secret that sticks it to the man. The man being the advertisers and wicked retailers. Never knew such dark thoughts were fomenting beneath the surface of seeimingly fairly innocuous purchases of stuff at thrift stores, huh?

Someone gave me a crock pot. It is a large one - a 7qt one. I really do need a bigger one. I also purchased the casserole crock pot. It is a casserole dish (9x13) that sits in a rectangle holder and heats casseroles for you. It is actually something I think I will use regularly. I am feeling the twinge of doubt - so I will think long and hard and sincerely about.

Blondie, just some food for thought, are you getting rid of the old crockpot? Where are you going to store both new ones when they are not in use? How often will you use one?
I have crockpot issues too. After DH passed away and it was just me, I thought I needed a smaller crockpot. After all, I was just cooking for one now - NOT! I haven't used the little one once. I use the big one as much as I ever did. I have to make a decision to either use the little one or get rid of it, which will be painful since it has never been plugged up.
OK, I'm getting the little one out and cooking something this afternoon to see how I like it. I'll never know if I don't use the thing.
I also bought some small corning ware casserole dishes. I do use them and I gave half my larger bowls to the Egg Lady and one small one. I haven't even missed them.

I put two small sweet potatoes in the little crockpot and they were ready when I came in from the farm. Just right. I'll try to use it again on something else tomorrow. I just hate cooking after I make the trip to the farm, lug feed around, wade the mud and hockey and drive all the way back.

Glad you used the crock imamess. I have resisted getting one. I don't have the cupboard space or the counter space. I browsed Goodwill today and didn't see anything I needed right now. There was a brief temptation with a bag of yarn but I resisted. I went to Grocery Outlet hoping to find more of the cami shapers, but alas, no. I did find them on ebay for a good price. They ship direct out of Hong Kong and the seller has very good ratings. So I think I'll do that. I did buy two more boxes of the hair color, just to have. For $4 a box, I think it's an okay speculation.

Bought myself a new leather wallet. A red one. Not a cheap one. I have never had a good quality vallet before.

How long did you bake them, Ima, and was it on high? And did you wrap them in foil or just put them dry into the crockpot? Did you pierce them with a fork, or is that not necessary in the crockpot?
Oddly enough, when I went to the grocery store the other day they had sweet potatoes on sale so I bought two small ones, and they're waiting to be cooked.

dtesposito, Diane, I don't know if imamess will see your question unless you tag her. I cook sweet potatoes in the microwave all the time. I try to buy the smaller ones - approx. 2 inches x 3 inches (or smaller). I wash it off, dry it, poke a few holes, and nuke for 5 minutes. I go turn it over every minute. They come out perfect! Then I split it open and add lots of butter, and salt n pepper. mmm mmmmmm!!

imamess..actually - I do use my smaller one and my larger one.......depending on what I am cooking and who will be home. what size is the one that you put the two small sweetpotatoes in? the smaller dip size one? I have the original size round (3? 3&1/2? qt?) I got it in 1986 and is the brown one. THen I got a 4 or 5 qt round one. This one has the removable insert. the one I as given was an oval one with the removable insert. I will have to use the largest one when I make chili as I make huge batches (but it all gets eaten quickly) I also use the medium round one for my chicken and gravy and other recipes. the smaller one gets used around the holidays for hot dips and meatballs and such. I think if I can gather enough recipes and plan enough meals - it will be ok. I want to make soups and stuff this winter and I will need both to do that. I am feeling guilty about the casserole size one - maybe I will take that one back.
