Ugh. Yuck. I am starting to clean my gross closet. It is in the small computer room/home office area, so at least it's not full of clothes and shoes. But, it is FULL. Of hoarded junk. And cat stuff. This closet has been my cat's chosen hangout. She loves to go in there and lay on a few pieces of wicker furniture I put in there for her. It's her favorite getaway spot. Her litter box is in there, too. When I walk on the floor, I go crunch, crunch on cat litter. It sticks to my socks. There is cat hair, and some cat poo, and some cat hairballs. What little clothing that is in there has cat hair on it. Oh, what a joy this will be to clean. I have pulled many of the things out already, and they are piled up on the floor around me. How can things from a small, standard sized closet fill up a room? My washer and dryer are running doubletime trying to clean these things up. I also have many framed pictures in there that need cleaned too, and put elsewhere. (Like hidden under the bed, I guess?) There is an old TV crammed in there...My old Carousel Horse Collection....Boxes of greeting cards....boxes of miscellaneous stuff that I have no idea what is in them....old blankets, old pillows, old rugs, old everything...yuck! Double yuck! I sure hope none of the boxes have papers in there to file or go through. Anyone care to join me? Margarita (who is wondering why on earth did I pay good money to drag these things across country? More than once!!) { Not the cat of course. }

I did that same thing Wednesday. The house we bought has a utility room, but the previous owners moved the washer and dryer connections, so now it's just a narrow closet. It has three cat boxes in it, with tile floor. I finally just swept it out and took the carpet steam cleaner to it. Smells a lot better now, and no crunching. Good luck!

Hi JVJ24601, Welcome to the board! Sounds like you have a great place to keep your litter boxes out of the way! Margarita

Well, I've managed to get the large framed lithographs and pictures out of the closet. They are going to "live" under my bed for awhile. That involved laying down on the floor and twisting and turning. Very unpleasant. Still not done with that. Took the underbed storage containers from the other room and stacked them nicely in the closet. I don't like having them there, but don't have any other room to keep them. They look nice, though. Wish I had a digital camera! (or any camera.) Am still working on washing clothes, etc. that have cat hair on them. Did find a box of papers to go through. What joy! Cleaned my kitty's wicker furniture and put them back in for her with a freshly laundered blanket for her. Of course, she's ignoring it now and sleeping on my bed! Still have big piles of stuff all over the floor. But, cleaned up the hairballs and litter and some poo. Vacuumed. Floor looks nice in the closet and did not find one bug! YAY Guess the piles of stuff will have to stay that way until this project is done. It's time to go to bed and dream about anything but closets. Margarita

WTG Margarita! You've been busy! I'm sure the kitty is appreciating the new quarters, even though she's moved to your bed, !

Thanks, Snailspace! One thing I like about cats is their independence!
This morning I finished putting away the extra lithographs and framed pictures.
Washed more items from this closet.
Now, I am organizing a small bookshelf in this closet and am going through some of the books that are stacked in there. That will probably take the rest of the evening.
Will remember to take "TOS Message Board" breaks and to drink tea and relax during breaks.
The good news is that the gross stuff is taken care of and now I am just de-hoarding and organizing. Is de-hoarding a word? The TOS spell checker doesn't think it is. Maybe I am unhoarding instead?
Either way, I am making some progress.

I'll be following this thread. I can tell you my closet will be the last place cleaned! I applaud you to "getting down and dirty".

Thanks, Clearwaterush and Skatters! I appreciate the support. Am still going through the books.... Books, books, books - always so hard to decide which ones to get rid of. Margarita Edited to add: Taking a break for a couple of days from this project. Too sore from too much lifting. Think I'll spend some extra time reading some of these books.

No actual work in closet today, but:
Took 1 bag of clothes to thrift shop. All were freshly laundered due to some cat hair. Also donated one blanket. And donated one book.
Straightened up garage. {Took just a few minutes.} Hopefully, back to the closet project again soon.

Margarita, you are doing some great work! I recently cleaned out my bedroom closet, but that was just all clothes, so nothing like you are dealing with. I will remember your success though, when I get to my side porch - it's an enclosed porch and I keep my 2 litter boxes out there. It is YUCKY to say the least! Enjoy your rest time and good luck finishing this project up! YOU CAN DO IT!

Thanks Carrie! You know, I was thinking about giving up 'cause this project seems never ending - but, you are right. Thanks for the motivation. I won't give up. Glad you have gotten your bedroom closet done and good luck with the porch! If I had a porch, it'd be full of stuff! Margarita

Any tiny little thing you do in your closet is closer to your goal! I want you to succeed because MY closet LOOMS in the background waiting......OMG! Your doing fantastic! I need your support. Just a little bit at a time. Reward yourself for doing what you already did. Remember/Baby Steps. You're at the top of my list.

Books put back in small bookshelf in closet. Didn't have the heart to get rid of my Snoopy books yet. Kept the Peter Rabbit ones, too. For now. Clothes hung up, but not entirely gone through. Was tired of them on my floor. Will go through some of them tonight. Will be easy. All are old and mostly unwanted. Cat's Wicker furniture back on HER side of the closet. ......yes....1/2 of this closet's floor space is for my ol' cat. Why? Because it's her favorite spot in the house. {I found my kitty in a cornfield in Iowa during a storm almost ten years ago. She had a broken tail and was a starving, dirty, feral kitten.............. Now, she is the Queen. } Two Rubbermaid totes stacked nicely on the floor for now. Not yet organized, though. Three small totes organized and put on the top shelf. One is empty!!!!! But, that won't last for long. Nothing gotten rid of yet so far today. Just organized. A little bit of churning going on, too. Still lotsa stuff on the floor. Lesson I learned: Don't keep heavy things on the top shelf of the closet because it hurts when they fall and hit me on the head!! A big "DUH" for me. (just don't tell my brain surgeon!) Lesson 2: You can't fit an entire room into a small closet no matter how hard you try. Time for a break. Think I'll go to the mall and hangout for awhile. Margarita
