I do this in so many areas, just never really at home with housework.
Example- I have a long commute. I have made it a game to figure out what milemarker is near what exit. I use Waze and was a little TOO excited when I got a sword (top 10% in my state).
Now I've got to go and look at these other games. We came up with a dice game years ago in an Old Navy coupon chat, where we'd roll the dice and take 10 minutes to tackle projects and someone would ring the bell in chat to let us know it was time up.

I lost my marbles some years ago, snort, but I find my old fashioned timer to be hugely helpful in game playing. Simple things for simple mind.

Games are not really my thing but I do like the idea of the marble jar. Now, did I or did I not give those away? Worldlygoods, I use pennies dropped into a jar.

I use pennies dropped into a jar to mark each 8 minute time segment I work. I also write the current date on a piece of paper and I make a tic mark on the piece of paper for each 8 minutes worked.
I like to see the pennies pile up in the jar, and I like to see the tic marks accumulate on the paper. It is a form of reward to see the tic marks and the pennies accumulate.
It gives me a sense of accomplishment on those days when I work and work, but can't see any visual change in the environment. I can look at the tic marks or the penny jar and see that yes, I did accomplish something.
After I had done this for a while, I started getting creative with the tic marks. I made columns, one for time spent doing maintenance, and one for time spent desqualoring, or bags of trash out, or whatever else I wanted to measure at the moment.
I made a ticker to go across the bottom of my page here, but it's more trouble to update than it is rewarding for me.

Hello Daye, Your pennies in a jar to track progress reminds me of when I first started desqualoring...You couldn't tell I was doing anything but the trash can kept getting filled up. I remember making the announcement to DH that I was getting things done" just look at the trash can!"

I was just thinking about this thread this weekend! Eerie! I love the 'low-tech' gamification techniques that have been shared! We don't all need super complicated ways to engage ourselves (and for some of us they're a huge distraction). wynken I'm going to check out that app as a reward for completing tasks after lunch today. I'm gamifying my gamification...

I loaded bags and bags of trash out the door, and yet, when I looked around the house, it looked basically unchanged. The tic marks and pennies showed me that I had indeed worked.

I have been pondering this one all day...what if you got one of those trivial pursuit pies and did 1 chore associated with each color like...
Brown = garbage/recycling (this includes pet waste) Green = food related chores (grocery shopping, cooking, clean fridge, dishes) Blue = Laundry (sort wash dry fold etc etc) Pink = floors (pick up, sweep, mop, vacuum) Orange = Hot Spots (beds, tabletops, counters, dressers etc etc) Yellow = Shiny Spots (Windows, Sinks, Mirrors, Toilets
So when you complete one chore from each category you get that color pie piece. When your pie is full you are done for the day. Does that sound crazy?

Our Dear still made a post linking to this Smithsonian article which references this study about the use of Tetris in treating PTSD. Not really about gamification per se, but it might be a useful use of break time when handling emotionally charged items while clearing and sorting.

I had been doing desqualoring for quite a while, maybe about 8 months, even filled a dumpster here, and a yard sale. I got so frustrated that I could see "no progress" that I diverted myself by playing a hidden object game. When I realized that I was desqualoring a room to escape from desqualoring a real room and all because I would randomly receive little pictures of "collection items" or points, I decided that perhaps I could try rewarding myself with stickers in a notebook. I have been playing this "game" for 5 months now. It has helped me tremendously to keep motivated and keep going. I have had to vary it from time to time to keep it interesting. A sticker for 5 things from anywhere is my favorite.
Now thanks to ideas from here, I just started a new journal book that I am going to put a sticker for each 8 min segment, thank you Dayeanu, for that wonderful idea. I hope that by the time the book is filled that my house will be in order. I'm also receiving a sticker in a section of a small notebook for each trash bag that goes out.
I like the idea of online things, but when I forget to log in, like with the Yoo Fit pedometer, it counts against me. Perhaps, I'm old fashioned, but I do like the hard copy, not techy things.
