The greatest would be if we could train them to use the toilet!

My first cat was an outdoor cat when we lived in a semi-rural area for the first 8 years of her life. But then I moved to a city apartment. My landlord insisted that she remain indoors so as not to dig in his flower beds. And besides, indoor cats usually live longer healthier lives. She quickly adapted to a litterbox, having used one during a couple of times boarding at the vet. That's when I started experimenting with every known method of litter and box and liners and scooping and disposal. Too bad that the shredded newspaper method didn't occur to me until years later when I was stone broke.

The greatest would be if we could train them to use the toilet! I tried that. I bought the citi kitty training system. FAIL! 6 cats and not one was willing to try. I tried to get the kittens to do it when they were about six weeks old. They thought the water was fun to play in, thats about it. Also if you only have one toilet in your house, it is a real pain to take it on and off every time a human needs to use the toilet. I really would have loved to train them to use the toilet! No more scooping boxes! I know there are people who have managed to do it, i guess it depends on the cat.

The greatest would be if we could train them to use the toilet! The tricky part would be to teach them to flush, and put the lid down, and replace the toilet paper roll when it runs out. Oh wait, I'm talking about my ex-boyfriend....

I stopped buying newspapers a few years ago. I don't have any old ones.
Is it cheaper to buy newspapers and shred them, than to buy cat litter? If that's a cost-cutting idea, then I would consider it. I have to be open to any ideas!

Lioness, as I mentioned, quite a lot of my junk mail is printed on newsprint. There are plenty of free papers in news stands and at grocery stores. Also I do buy the big Sunday newspaper every week, so altogether I always have a bountiful supply.
You could ask if your neighbors have old newspapers to pass along to you?
At first I tried putting the newspapers through my paper shredder, but it's actually much quicker and easier to tear them in strips by hand.

I see free community type of papers at the library or at newspaper stands. I don't used them for cat litter but I have used them to line the pan.

How about pages from old phone books/yellow pages...? Maybe you can ask some friends for their old ones, and they can ask their friends, and so on... I bet there are a lot of people who would be happy to get rid of them!

Part of my difficulty in dealing with trash / throwing things away is because of my extreme discomfort with creating extra waste. Throwing out kitty litter daily means buying more plastic. I use flushable almond litter, but the pipes in my apt are old and it caused my toilet to back up badly. Now I find I can keep up with the litter or the human trash, but not both. Yesterday I came upon this and I think I'm going to invest. It looks like it might make things easier so hope this idea helps someone else too www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+27986+27994+26454&pcatid=26454

Yesterday I read on a natural cat care blog about someone using dry oatmeal for cat litter.
These days I try to buy large bags of things like cat litter and dog food online and look for specials that include free shipping. That way it is delivered directly to my door and I don't have to struggle to get it into and out of a shopping cart and into and out of the car.

One of my cats will poop in the bathtub if not allowed to go outside. Trying to keep her in because I lost her sister to the neighbor's mole poison. Training training the new kitten to use Feline Pine.
