I am planning a wall painting at home over this weekend, starting on Friday late afternoon, finishing on Sunday evening, with addition of the next Tuesday off to clean what is left. We will do a kitchen, a hallway, a bathroom and a toilet room (no toilet in the bathroom here).
You are welcome to work along on your projects, if you like.
Thursday evening: I made a plan with my neighbour, who will be doing most of the actual painting including small repairs on walls where needed. I started moving out all sorts of stuff and nicknacks (pictures off walls etc.) AHA moments: 1. I never thought we have so many things there. Unfortunatelly most of them is not mine, not much purging I can do. 2. After moving things away I found out how dirty the kitchen is. It will need a deeper cleaning than I expected. So much for my maintenance

Nice to have someone to paint along with . I'm working on exactly the same rooms as you, but in a much slower pace. I have finished the bathroom and the kitchen and started yesterday with the ceiling in the hall. I let it dry today because otherwise the new paint would peel off if I put painter's tape on it to paint the walls. Tomorrow I'll do the walls.

Welcome flotsam You are much braver than I am, I am not painting it alone. I am just using an opportunity, when my flatmate is on a vacation for a week, so I have erase the evidence within a week before he comes back. Also, when I moved things out of the kitchen, I looked at things with fresh eyes and noticed for the first time insides of a cupboard - things were added there during decades and now I realised how badly the space is used and how mismatched the shelves are, so this will be my additional job. I would also like make enough space to put a coffee maker that is rarely used in there, as it will mean less things on a counter to wipe.

My kitchen is also used badly. I don't want to spend big money though because there's still a chance that I'll move in a few years. And I think you are braver because you do it all at one time! Does flatmate know? Hallway taped off . Taping off is -- for me -- the worst part of painting. This tiny hallway has 4 doors, then there are the baseboards, the ceiling, a circuit breaker panel (later put in, so there's also wiring on top of the wall to tape off). Well, at least I can claim the worst part is done . Now taking a break (noon meal/"coffee"/reading), and then I'll paint happily .

No, the flatmate does not know, but I do not think there will be any complaints. I choose this time on purpose - no one else to think about in regards of messing with their plans. Because of that I want to erease all evindence by next Sunday. No mess will be there, only nice and clean rooms. The kitchen has not been painted for 15 years and the rest even longer and it really shows. Other than paint and the helper (my neighbour) I am not investing any money as the flat is not mine either, but sorting things on shelves and putting them on different ones costs only my time. And I am doing it for myself too. I am still at work now, my painting - prep work tonight - will start no sooner than half past four this afternoon. It is not stopping me in thinking about those shelves and planing though.

I would join you two - but I finished my painting two weeks ago. But I will be cheering you on! flotsam - I agree with you - the prep is worse than the actual painting, and it sure sounds like your taping off was a huge job. Good for you for getting it done. lucie - I hope you can get your shelves to work out for you. It's nice that you have a neighbor to help you. I'm sure you both will be so pleased at the end of your projects.

Thank you hollyhock You can join us with a project of your own - it does not have to be painting. Yes, the prep work is the most difficult. Great job, flotsam, doing it yourself. I can not imagine doing it on my own. Also having a lot of things somewhere else than usual is a complication for me. That is why doing all painting during one weekend works better for me. But unlike you two, I am not doing it alone - it sort of feels like cheating after I read what you both did yourself. As for those shelves - imagine having old magazines, a hair dryer and mugs on one shelf. Some stationery, photoes and a toaster on another one. And so on. Why it did not seem strange to me before?

Thanks lucie. But after all of my recent craziness (projects), I may take this weekend off! If I do anything it might be 1 small drawer or papers removed from the old file cabinet - but nothing major. If I change my mind, I may join you, but I will probably just sit back and watch.

lucie, I couldn't resist giggling while imagining your shelves . I'm not better. A stranger looking in my kitchen cupboards would be quite puzzled. I have to provide the furniture and appliances of my kitchen, but it was bought for the kitchen in the apartment I had before. So it doesn't fit and takes too much space. hollyhock, thanks for cheering us on! I didn't comment on your blog, but I'm following and admiring your progress, and you provided me with the vocabulary for painting. All mistakes I'll make are mine, of course. OnTheMend, you have a long list. Good luck! Hi turkeyhill . Next step done: I cut off the power, removed the coverings of the light switches, painted the walls, put back the coverings of the light switches, turned the power on and washed the tools. So far I haven't removed the painter's tape because I'm not yet sure that one coat will be enough, but I think so. The painting wasn't too easy with all the nooks and crannies, and I had to use the brush a lot even though I chose the smallest paint roller (11 cm/a bit more than 4 inches). It took me almost 2 hours.

Painting sounds so huge job!
I did a first round a general vacuuming (whole apartment) and started the detailed vacuuming in some areas. Next step is to get the area rug project done, it's been in progress few weeks now, making my office room unusable. So: I'm going to reclaim that room! Oh, and I booked laundry room for this evening and my first load is washing as we speak.

Congrats to anyone doing painting. It is, by far, my favorite indoor chore. It makes such a big difference when you paint a room! Or even just paint a hall or a ceiling or one wall. COLOR makes such a difference, even if it's a dull old gray, at least it looks super-clean! So much bang for your buck! And I'm not just talking about the cost of paint, your time and effort count, too!
