dayeanu - I have not checked out the website you posted yet. However I did become familiar, about a year ago, with the Project 333 concept, and I did a lot of reading on it. I don't think I could go that low in clothing - especially since I do not know where my life will take me. Will I get a job? And what sort of clothes will I need. (I currently have very few at home clothes and they are ancient and in bad shape. I will need to get a few new items, I think, for running around in an apt building.) I have on occasion tried looking at capsule wardrobes, trying to decide how much I need of things, but could never find anything that appealed to me. But last night this number just popped into my head. '5'. I think 5 may be my perfect starting number. By 5 I mean 5 short sleeve blouses, 5 long sleeve blouses, 5 turtlenecks, 5 cardigans, 5 pair of shorts - that sort of thing. I think 5 might be my magic number - and could get me through just about anything. So that will be something to work on. I almost laughed when you posted about 100 possessions. I don't think you were around when I moved my jewelry out of my bedroom. My necklaces. I worked in a business setting - but not really in suits. I usually wore slacks but had various tops to wear with them and either a jacket or a cardigan. And I always wore a necklace. My favourite clothing store also sold jewelry - usually buy one, get one free - so if I went in and bought 2 tops, I might come out with 4 necklaces to match what I bought! Everything mixes and matches. So when I finally took them down, I had 72 necklaces!!!! (This does not include my good pearls etc - only work stuff. ) So I think with that too I will pare down - maybe my 5 favourite short and 5 favourite long necklaces.

Interesting. I was just thinking about this. I need to do some clothes shopping with 13 yr old son, and was wondering how much he really needs. Some of the online sites suggest 3-5 pr of jeans, 7-10 t shirts, 10 each socks and underwear. Right now he is in a "I only wear black" phase, so 3 pair of perfectly good blue jeans are going unworn and will be outgrown He also wants what he calls "band shirts" which are t shirts promoting specific bands he likes, but then he just covers them up by wearing a hoodie all the time. He is so funny...last year for 7th grade he refused to wear anything but shorts until I forced the issue in January!!! Now he won't wear shorts at all(except for PE) just wants BLACK jeans, black t shirts..... We definitely need to purge clothes, got into a bad habit of just going out and buying more instead of doing laundry. I think I heard or read that this is called "Doing laundry at Walmart)..but now everyone says they don't fit or can't find any especially socks, no one can ever find socks.... I have about 6 baskets in the living room of washed laundry hopefully I can get a bunch of bags for Goodwill out of them.

HFH. One good thing about an all black wardrobe is that you don't need to sort things to wash. I think with kids I would go with about 5 pants and 10 tops and 10 underwear and socks - so you can safely get through a week, and a bit more. I also noted that most sites numbers had twice as many tops as bottoms. (When I said 5 of each - I would still have over 10 tops so that I could switch out even if I only had 5 bottoms. )

@hfh Can you dye the jeans black? My DGS went through that phase ..... for about 3 years. Then he came in a couple of weeks ago and informed me that he would like to start wearing dress shirts every day. 0_o

I went through a goth phase when I was about 15 and used to dye EVERYTHING black - blacker than the blackest black times INFINITY!! Goodness, that was nearly 30 years ago! I used to dye stuff in the bath.

, My mom suggested the same thing, I can only try it and see if he will wear them. We DID go shopping though today because I had a $10 Kohl's coupon from the mail. He found a pair of black jeans originally $44, marked down to $17.60, so I said ok since we had the coupon. Got to the register and they ring up $13.20, then she scans my coupon!!! We paid $3.33 for jeans marked $44!!!!

I have been able to get rid of clothing that I was very fond of but only after I was able to accept that the job was also permanently gone too.
I finally last year got rid of the last of my office clothes. THAT was hard. I loved my suits, scarves, heels, and jewelry. The clothing I have now is very specific to this store I work at as well as the overall environment of this little tourist town where I've been working in the boutiques.
I actually wouldn't wear this stuff normally, I'm more conservative and have always been more into suits and button up shirts. So I have only bought enough that I have 2 to 3 outfits for each season of the year.
For off work time, I have a handful of good t-shirts and turtlenecks and three pairs of pants for each season. They're all in solid colors and I add interest and pattern with scarves mostly in the winter and necklaces in the warmer months. I have wool and cashmere sweaters for the winter, all thrift store bought, I think 6 of those.
When I did the real estate job I was constantly clothes shopping in the thrifts. We really dressed up, several different outfits for each season. I've kept only a couple of things from this time, a Jones New York jacket I can't bear to let go of let as well as a pair of heather gray cashmere and wool slacks. Oh, and a long, wide-lapel camel and wool trench coat. I'll have this 'till I'm 90 if I have anything to say about it.

In January this year, when I cleared my closet of all the clothes that didn't fit, didn't feel good, or didn't look good... this blog post was my best inspiration: smallnotebook.org/2011/04/05/how-to-manage-your-wardrobe-with-common-sense/Also, here's a clever trick if your decision-making skills are rusty (sorry, I can't remember where I read it)... Go to your closet and turn ALL the hangers around backwards on the rod. When you wear an item, hang it back up with the hanger facing the correct way. At the end of one year (or whatever), you'll clearly see which clothes never got worn, since those hangers are still turned backwards. Ask yourself: NOW can you let them go?

Hello Also, here's a clever trick if your decision-making skills are rusty (sorry, I can't remember where I read it)... Go to your closet and turn ALL the hangers around backwards on the rod. At the end of one year (or whatever), you'll clearly see which clothes never got worn, since those hangers are still turned backwards . . . Wondering how to tweak that method for someone who keeps their clothes in a pile on the end of their bed? Yesterday I read this by Francine Jay ("The Joy of Less") that I'd like to try: Get three spools of ribbon - green, yellow, and red. In the evening, after wearing an item, tie the hanger of the item with a bow: Green if it made you feel fabulous, red if it made you feel frumpy, and yellow if you're on the fence about it. At the end of six months, keep the greens and yellows, and trash the reds. And those that haven't got any bow at all -- go with the red ones. I really like this idea because I sometimes think, while wearing an item: "Oh, I should donate this item; it doesn't suit me very well any more." Then I wash it (originally with the intention of donating it), but forget about my donating intention, and wear it again... Circle. I'd like to try to disrupt this circle by applying this color marking.

I guess we could have two piles - the ones we wear regularly, and the rest. I can't really do this, because a lotmofmthenclothes I love and would wear, I can't find. I was thinking about this - I bet I wear less than 33 items - because that's all I can find!

Took 5 baskets of clothes to the laundromat yesterday to wash. Two of them were clothes that are used and worn throughout the week. The other 3 were just clothes that we had collected from cleaning the laundry room and son's bedroom floor I sorted them right there into a bag for Goodwill, baskets for our clothing AND THE TRASH RIGHT THERE IN THE LAUNDROMAT. Yes, I threw things away right there. We dropped the Goodwill bag off this morning so it would not be brought back inside.
