Sorry you're struggling with cold larataylor. That is so tiring and demoralizing. I stayed up too late with anxiety from the wind last night, I think lights were out at midnight. Alarm at 7:00, up at 7:30. Have an obligation to go to the symphony tonight. I really really don't want to go. It will yet another late night. It's the Christmas Program and I'm sick of Christmas music. Why did I say yes to this? I said yes earlier in the fall right after S died and this mutual friend, an older lady, offered to get me a ticket as she had been going solo for a long time. I was not thinking straight and thinking I should get out and socialize more...and now I don't want to let down this older lady who is relatively isolated as it is.

Well, it's kind of you to go with her. I really don't like going out at night anymore. Especially in winter. You're getting some brownie points.

I have been going to bed and getting up later and later. I took annual leave this week to work on the house getting decluttered and organized, and to get ready for Christmas. So getting to work isn't an issue but it will be when I go back next week. My boss has been pretty easygoing about what time I get in. She seems to see productivity as a bigger issue than punctuality. I often come in a few minutes late but I also stay late and get my work done. But in January we will have a new computerized timekeeping system so we have to swipe in or sign in online - don't know yet exactly - so I better get my act together!
I have been going to sleep anywhere from midnight to 2 a.m. and getting up at 8, 9 or so. I take less time to wake up when I wake up later. But it messes me up to get such a late start. I don't get the morning essentials done in the morning, and there is very little morning left after I do. If that makes sense.
I seem to be staying up a little later each night. I think this is because my circadian rhythm is a little longer than 24 hours. I have always been a night owl, not a morning person. There have been some times in my life when I habitually got up very early, like 5 am or so, and had my morning essentials and maintenance housework done by 7 or 8. That was fun. But if I remember correctly, I took a nap in the afternoon, then stayed up late. These were times when I wasn't working and was free to do things when it suited me. I think my natural sleep rhythm is six hours at night and a two hour nap in the afternoon. I gravitate to that when I don't work. I have read that this is normal for about a third of the population. Unfortunately our culture is not set up for that. Maybe I should move somewhere where an afternoon siesta is the norm. Kidding, but I think I will experiment with a six-and-two schedule on days off. For right now I am going to try to work toward getting to sleep at 11 and up at 7. Then maybe I will move to 10-6. Or 12-6 and a nap ideally. Well I am getting sleepy so I am rambling. I am heading for bed. I sorta want to listen to my audiobook, but I keep falling asleep and missing parts of it. Then I have to rewind. A better plan would be to listen to a tape that is made for falling asleep to.

Hi shabbychic - finding the most value for our hours in bed is a challenge, and it must be hard if you would like extra hours in your day (I read of people who have a 27hr rhythm) Good luck as you experiment, that you find what suits you. Have you tried relaxation techniques with your nap time? When I worked I could get great help with 10 min relaxation if I could set the timer and totally switch off for 10 minutes between my work day and the evening saga.. last night - bed ? light out 11.15, misread the time and was up bit after 7. It was a cooler night here, and hard to get my bed coverings just so , warm enough, not cool.

I finally got to sleep around 1 am. Once I am tired, sometimes it seems like I am too tired to go to bed. I have to make myself turn off the computer and get in the bed, and it's easier to just keep clicking on stuff. I feel like crud this morning. Been up since 8 but not very up. All I've accomplished is eating toast and coffee, taking the dog out and feeding her, and fooling around on the computer. I have lots of stuff I wanted to do today too. But brain is still fuzzy. I have got to get this under control.
I don't have much trouble getting to sleep for a nap. The main issue is they don't think much of naps at my job! I can totally take a nap on my days off. I do have some relaxation tapes. Some are good for a power nap because they take you into a relaxed state and then back out into full alertness in 15-20 minutes.
We recently moved into a new building at my job, and I, like most of my colleagues, moved from an office with a door, to a cubicle. I used to catch a nap at lunch time if I needed it, but can't do that now unless I go to my car. It's a bit cold for that, and sometimes I let my son use the car during the day. I might try what I have seen another cube dweller do: she posts a sign on the back of her chair that says "I'm at lunch," and puts her head on her desk and snoozes.
Tonight I am going to try to get to bed by 11. Nothing worthwhile (for me) happens after 11. I think I'm just staying up past "bedtime" out of rebellion, or demand resistance. Because I can. Ok then, inner child. Bedtime is at 9. So let's stay up until 11, because we can.
I'll let you know if that works.

good plan shabbychic I really have to be focused on winding down from 8.30, to have lights out by 12. Too tired makes it harder for me to go to bed. Last night. Too wired up. got caught in the looking at computer - yes and the clicking. lights out was 12.45. Put on another blanket, and slept sooner and better than previous night. I wake up slowly, rose 7.15.

shabbychic I can relate to the being to tired to go to bed! What a funny thing really but I find myself pinned to the couch without the gumption to turn off the TV and/or computer! I have been saying to myself, if I am not doing anything productive or making an active choice of some kind in terms of TV watching or internet time, then just go to bed. Mind-numbing, tune-out activities are NOT useful. I do them when I am tired or upset and in both cases, laying down flat in bed is a healthier choice. I can listen to an audiobook or podcast and get my mind on better things. I've been ping-ponging back and forth from a good early bedtime to late due to social activities. I've also been sleeping too late on my off days in an attempt to make up the sleep. So I think I need to really reconsider these evening things and whether it is a higher good.

Yesterday after trip I went to bed at nine and got up at six forty five. Yes I was that tired. Last summer, I was doing a lot of gardening jobs, and I would come home physically tired, take a shower, go to bed, and sleep for hours, often in the afternoon, or whenever! I actually enjoy physical exhaustion after years of being too depressed to work hard enough to get tired. But my house slid into disarray while I was making money … until September, when work slowed down and I discovered SOOS. I got the house back to where it was, and then way past that in terms of simplicity and minimalism. My ultimate goal is to be able to work for money *and* maintain the house, and I need things simple, simple, simple to do that. I'm glad you got a long sleep! I got up at 7:00 this morning, took DD to school, and went right out to buy envelopes to fill orders … but Staples wasn't open yet. Argh.

What's working best for me is having something I need to get up for … taking my kid to school means getting dressed and going outside into the daylight. Once I do that, I can keep myself out of bed.
In the evening I really need to get all my before-bed stuff done before I go into that too-tired-to-go-bed zone. Sometimes that's difficult when DD stays up later … I always worry about her falling asleep with her laptop on her bed, and I can't count on DH to check on her. Maybe I could get him trained, though … he'll remember a habit if he does it every day … I just can't count on him to do things that I usually do.

I need to keep checking in here and not just lurking. My sleep schedule is all over the place. Last night I stretched out around 8 or 8:30 just to rest my brain - had gotten off work, DS picked me up around six, we went to the store and picked up something to eat, ate, he was watching TV etc and I just needed some peace and quiet. I put on headphones and turned on an audiobook. Next thing I knew it was 11. I got up, took my meds, put pajamas on, put on the CPAP and went back to sleep. Woke up this morning at 8. I don't know what's going on. Sometimes it seems like all I do is work and sleep. Could be the short dark days. I won't get to bed early tonight because I am off to midnight church service.

Impossible to maintain routines this week, just impossible! Late nights due to family activities combined with still needing to get up early-ish (7 or so) has left me exhausted.
Hoping next week I can get back to my early bedtimes.

I've actually been sleeping this last few days at dd's. Aiming for lights out at 12, and dropping off without too long a delay. Wake up times vary from dark04 to approaching 7 on one excellent night. It beats all the times I've been here and not slept at all. 5 hrs is probably still my average. I'll be home tomorrow for a couple of weeks.
