I have a tip that I have been practicing lately with good results. Before I go out in the AM, I run the dishes and 1 load of clothes so that my machines can be working while I am out. When I get back to the house, I put the laundry in the dryer and I put up the dishes, It's automatic. During the day, when I enter a room, I'll do a very quick job of making the bed, we're talking minutes, or emptying out the waste basket. Somedays I'll swish the toilet and wipe the mirror and sink with a microfiber towel five minutes before I have to leave the house to pick up one of my children. On the way out of the door, I will take the kitchen garbage out. Other days, I will take the broom …which is stored near the front door, and sweep the front hall and porch. Pick up the living room and dust while a watch TV or a movie (I don't watch either much) I think I am on to something here. I love anything easy, simple and fast. I might start timing and writing down in a notebook each task and how long it took me.

Just a side bar…I also take my daily water and daily raw fruits and veggies with me to consume when I am out of the house. I find that I get them down me with ease when there is nothing else to eat or drink.

Def, i love the idea of having nothing but my healthy foods with me to nosh while i'm out, so i'm not tempted by the availability of anything else.
For me, though, i couldn't run any big appliances while i'm out of the house -- i'm afraid i would come back to a washer or dishwasher that overflowed and flooded the house. Yes, it has happened. Such big appliances only run when i'm home, the only thing i'll leave on while i'm out is the crock pot. If i want to run the washer in the morning, i make sure it's done by the time i leave to take Little Girl to school.

How exciting that these have become such a matter of fact part of your daily routine. You do then without thinking about doing them.....and it really only takes a minute or so.
Congratulations!!!!!

Thats a very good point, Messymimi about being there when the major appliances are running. In that case, running both the laundry and the dishes as soon as I rise in the AM would work for me. Then, as soon as I return home, put the dishes up and put the laundry in the dryer. Hello Oh Blondie Habits are the only way I keep myself strait!

I agree with messymimi about NOT leaving the washing machine on while you're gone! A few years ago, I started a load of laundry and was going to leave to run to the store, but then I waited cus I wanted to listen to something on a radio program... Well, THANK GOD I waited!! I heard a hissing sound... the washing machine hose had busted and water was flooding my laundry room!! I quickly turned off the water within a minute of it happening. Imagine if I had left and been gone an hour?

I run the washing machine as soon as I get dressed after my shower, then it's almost ready to hang out when I get back from the school run, I'm trying to make beds daily (not really getting there but this is reminding me I need to do it). I'm hoping that the kids will see their nicely made beds each day and take the hint to clean their rooms up, do you think it will work?

I won't run the dryer when I am not home. Heck. Right now I am not running it at all!!!!
I have run the washing machine and dishwasher while I am gone. I will rethink the washer now.
I have left the oven on while outside or walking the dog. Once i left it on while I ran to the store......I was nervous but dinner was ready when I got home! !!!
I feel safe leaving the crock pot on all day. I have an auto shut off iron incase I space out and leave it on! !!! I am trying to develope the habit of putting it away after I use it so there are no questions! !!

Hello Wife and Mum ::big wave:: Way to go on the positive habits that you are putting forth already. I think the children will notice that you have been in their rooms during the day and the making of the bed is a great example for them .

Thanks, perhaps now they will be more inclined to hide their torches etc (for reading under the covers) better after yesterday, when I confiscated them after finding them under their pillows.

In my old house, the washer and dryer were on a wooden platform in the basement. One day I heard an awful racket, and the washer had walked itself off the edge of the platform. Now they're in a closet, so the worst they can do is bang together … other than bursting into flames, that is.

def6 I want to get back to you talking about doing the quick and easy jobs. That is something I discovered was an important part of my "8 minutes" plan. I felt like I never had time to do anything, but in reality, I wasted lots of time every day, just a few minutes here and there, waiting for DGS to get his teeth brushed so we could go somewhere, waiting for family to come in for supper, waiting for this or that. I realized I could do a little something while I waited, or in between activities/events. When I started using the odd minutes here and there to do some simple chores, I began to realize how those minutes add up, and what a difference doing a chore even for a few minutes can make such a big difference. It also made me realize that for many chores, I don't have to have two hours, I don't have to be dressed in my house cleaning clothes, I don't have to get out a tub of cleaning supplies. I can stand at the sink in my Sunday dress and wash a glass or two, I can wipe down the bathroom mirror or sort through a little bit of clutter. As you are saying, there's a lot of power in using the odd few minutes here and there.

Tonight I did a short deep cleaning mission while my bath ran. I wiped down one side of my bedroom window. Normally I wander around not knowing what to do.

Good job Angela! Good job def! Dayaneau you are so right. It's the little things adding up that count. Tidying are environment as we go about our day without making a big terrible deal about it and shutting ourselves down. I wonder how many of us have semi traumatic experiences of being forced to do big clean outs when our rooms went chaotic? Maybe it's a normal part of functioning to do small tidying tasks as you go along and that's how others can stay out of squalor while we can't?
