I usually scoop just once a day but last week I had to take my cat to the ER and her diagnosis was severe constipation!! One anesthetized kitty enema, almost a thousand dollars, and a week's worth of kitty laxative later and I am scooping several times a day now Thankfully and thanks to SOS I already had my system in place and even with all the extra scooping duties over the past week I am proud to report that the litter box is sparkly and no trace of odor In the house!

After reading some stuff online, I decided to try taking the covers off my litter boxes. I think the cats like it better… I'm not seeing so much scratching around the outside of the box. And I can just walk around the house and look at them, and clean them when I notice something. But still, I do have days when I slack off a bit, but having them open like that … I really can't imagine letting an open litter box go as long as I've let them go in the past when they had covers … when I was afraid to look . And for a while I was vacuuming every single day … I would do litter boxes first, then vac the whole house. But I haven't been so good about THAT since I went nuts on the basement. I wish I had a dust buster.

important first step In getting out of squalor
Cleanbee, this is so true. Once the litter pans slide it's just downhill from there.
Lara, you're lucky that the cats used the covered pans--if you don't like to see what's in the pans, imagine having to crawl in there when it's covered, and the pan is full, and the the smell is contained, to use it. Finicky or large cats often don't use covered pans.
I'm terrible with cleaning--as in, I do actual cleaning very rarely--but I got into the clean litter pan habit pretty early on--I scoop AM and PM every day, 99% of the time. Now sweeping around it, I'm not so good at! Luckily they don't kick out enough litter to make them think it's okay to use what's out on the floor.

Luckily my kitty doesn't have a problem with the covered box because otherwise the dogs would be scavenging for snacks in there!!!
i scooped and swept this morning and again this evening.
I'm going to cut back on her laxative to once a day and see how things go.

Hi cleanbee - so glad you got a diagnosis for your kitty. I hope she is doing well?
In the jendela household Ms Prissy decided very early on that she was not prepared to be an inside only cat. After some behavior modification (on her part), we came to a compromise that she would be allowed out for short periods during daylight hours. She has a strict curfew and her standard feeding time means that she is always inside from sundown until well after sunrise. This has reduced the need for scooping, however I still need to be mindful of regular sweeping and changing litter.
Thanks for starting this thread.

I just took the lid off my covered litter box, because my cat was pooping beside it. This is a pain in the butt, because I'm sure the dogs are going to try to eat it. I have the vacuum and a portable oil heater blocking off access, which isn't the nice open floor plan I was working towards, when I cleared the room of the stacked laundry baskets. WTH, cat? Why now??? Ten years of using lidded pans, and now that I have a clean floor, you're pooping on it? That's as bad as me just prying a piece of gum off the newly-cleaned bathroom floor, yup that did happen! Is there a conspiracy going on here, where I'm the only one who wants a clean home??? ARGH!

Cyn...houses and cats always need something. Houses and cats own us not we own them!

Well done cleanbee. cyn - I agree with lostchild - a cat has a mind of its own. I know our cat doesn't like a covered litter box, although I would prefer to have a cover. However, as usual, the cat gets what she wants and I have to adapt. It is strange though that your cat has been ok with a cover for 10 years - maybe it is a health issue that needs to be checked out?

I did the litter boxes once today. Didn't vacuum or sweep. I'm feeling really tired with my cold, and mostly just getting up when the basement calls to me, and working down there. Then I'm exhausted again. DH and I went out shopping for a few things DD needed for tonight. Then DH took her to the venue to practice / get ready. Then she called and asked me to find two more things and bring them over. We did that. In 15 minutes we have to drive back again for the performance. Whew. Good thing she's so grown-up and doesn't need her parents anymore.
