I was moving boxes one time and I found a brown shoelace under one. That doesn't sound bad but I had just watched an episode of "Hoarding: Buried Alive" where they found a mummified copperhead in a lady's house. Naturally I jumped back a little before I saw what it really was. I pinned it up on our whiteboard with the note "Mary's Mummified Copperhead". It's a good motivator and makes me smile when I look at it.

A dead chipmunk. In front of my washer and dryer in the basement. With cat holes in it. Yeah. I think it got in through the dryer vent.
When it comes to vermin of the rodent variety you definitely don't need to be living in squalor to find them in your home. (I have had mice, a chipmunk, and a live bat in my living room)
Last month when I was cleaning the basement I found one of my husband's half filled coffee mugs. There was more mold in the mug than coffee. Eeeewwwww! I chucked it. If my husband had found it he would have put it in the sink for me to wash...*sigh*
Lara, it's funny how you mention your husband's wanting to get back at "the man" doesn't effect "them" but has a direct bearing on YOU! This is a theme in my house as well....

We had a squirrel come down our chimney once … and thank goodness the fireplace was clean at the time! I was terrified that the squirrel would tussle with my young cat who'd not had all her shots yet. But thankfully they stayed away from each other. The squirrel pooped and peed as he jumped around the house … and was too dumb to find the windows I opened for him, but smart enough to get food out of a Have-a-Heart trap without springing it.
I thought he was gone, and the next morning discovered that he'd bedded down in a wastebasket. Finally he found an open window.
We also had birds come down the chimney several times. Chimney covers are a good thing!

My most embarassing find was my 1981 tax return. (The paper copy I kept, not the refund check.)

We had a thread like this somemtime back. We have to laugh about these things sometimes. I think the winner on that thread was someone who found a prosthetic leg!

I haven't found any embarrassing things so far but I found a lot of toys pieces and got a lot of stuff put back together!
I found a lot of shoes that my son packed one and lost the other. Why he kept one shoe I don't know!

Your home doesn't have to be squalorous (generally ) for one to find a "pocket of total GROSSNESS "!!! Kiddo had a hamster years ago. Poor thing escaped and was captured by the resident Fat Cat. The hamster cage just got stuffed in a closet. There WAS a box of food next to it. Suitcases got piled on top. Mice found it and decided to homestead. They converted it to condos by eating into the suitcases. When we unpacked the closet we were ALL disgusted by the filth. Needless to say, cage , suitcases, ruined clothes and a large stash of mouse poop was evicted!!!

I might have started this thread because I was dreading what I'd find in the closet. You know, if they're nesting beside the dresser, what will they do in the closet? Oh wonder of wonders - almost nothing! A little poop here, and shoe filled with seeds there - nothing new, but nothing terrible either. I did have a tiny scare, when I found a bag with my dog's brush and some hair, ha. My 'duh' moment came when I finished a roll of paper towels. I like those tubes, to take down cobwebs, so I don't recycle them. Of course, I end up with too many, so eventually get rid of a pile at once. I remembered doing that not long ago, so this new tube was a keeper. Duh - when I opened the cupboard where I keep them, I saw that I'd had that same thought 9 times already! So I now have 10 tubes in there, rotfl. Dayeanu, I'll have to look for that other thread. I love hearing these stories - thanks for sharing them, everyone!

A couple months ago I found two library books that I had lost and finally paid for. It's not embarrassing, so much as funny. The two books were "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Organization" and "The Hoarder inside of you". The librarian probably wasn't amused.

Thedreadedknock, that's why I don't use the library! I *know* I'll lose the book, so why bother? That IS funny!

I found some gross and embarrassing stuff when I cleaned out the fridge last night. I have no idea what it was. Thankfully it was sealed up in zip lock bags!

I *really* need to get into the habit of storing leftovers in plastic bags, that's the greatest idea ever. I used to use my hoard of plastic containers saved from other food items, until recently when I recycled them all. I've never used nice expensive storage pieces, so I can throw away anything that's been sitting too long. One time I opened up an old yogurt container, and it was filled to the top with a grey powdery mildew. That was scary, because I know I breathed in a bazillion spores. So now, I don't even look - it's just bye bye mystery item. I'll know I've conquered my squalorous fridge habits, when I can graduate to using pretty tupperware/rubbermaid, lmao.

I keep thinking I'm done with the pockets of GROSSNESS in this house, and then I find another one. That fridge downstairs that I just scrubbed down because I needed to use it was really gross. I had previously emptied it, so at least I didn't have to do that in an urgent situation.
I think I've cleaned everywhere, and then I realize that I've never moved *that* piece of furniture, and yuck! The upstairs fridge, which is now on the blink, had not yet been moved, and the dust underneath it was pretty amazing.
