My ick to today was getting decades worth of dust off a ceramic Christmas tree, the kind with the fake snow on it. Wow, was that ever gross looking on all those white porous areas. Blech! My little hand-held steamer made quick work of it, though - I really love that little thing. It's not exactly living up to the hype, but I can find all sorts of filthy projects for it, and the added bonus of not needing a cleaning solution to get things done makes me love it even more.

My ick is something I should have done yesterday. Clean up the sticky, yet rock hard leftover mess from making sugar cookies with the kids. It's going to have to be scraped off.

shosha is there a shutoff value for the toilet? If you turn it off and then flush, the tank cant refill. A second flush with the near empty tank should bring the water level down to almost nothing in the bowl. When i cleaned my very neglected toilet, i used lime-away. The bottle says to let it sit for 20 minutes. I found no difference between letting it sit for 20 minutes and letting it sit overnight. Since it smells so bad and needs ventilation, i just do 20 minutes now. ive done two treatments on it and it is much better but not perfectly clean. There is alot of iron in my water so there was a very heavy mineral/rust/soil buildup, i dont think the former owner ever cleaned the bowl. Good luck with your loo. I'm sure there must be, but I can never find it Trouble with council flats is you never really know what you're meant to have access to, e.g. the phone company has to fiddle with a thing half way down the hallway from my front door to fix anything wrong with my line... I've managed to get about 80% of the limescale off with two consecutive nights of letting the green stuff sit overnight, it definitely doesn't do much if I leave it for a more sensible amount of time like an hour or so. I don't think we have lime-away here. I bought a new plunger today (how festive!) so I'll try and get all the water out and leave it on one more time tonight, and then I've got a pumice stone to try and get off the remaining bits if need be. Otherwise I'll just flush it lots and then stick a load of bleach down to try and make what's left look less rusty and horrid... I've read that WD-40 is meant to do wonders on limescale, but nowhere round here has it, might try to order some in the new year.

The ick I did the other day was to touch up the gross rusted/peeling paint area on the outer bottom of my shower stall. It's not finished, but I'm touching it up with nail polish, . I thought either that, or automotive paint would work - but that would smell terrible, so nail polish it is. The caulking has to be done before I can fix the rest. I bought white, and added some beige, to get the ivory I needed. It's a decent enough match for me - it sure beats rusty brown anyhow. My DH did a major ick yesterday: he scraped dog booger off the wall, behind her bed. Yay! That wall looks so nice now, it really made a difference.

cyn - I'm really having some ick envy. Even my outer, still-cluttered areas just aren't that icky. I'm stuck with boring maintenance tasks that never go away. Dishes, laundry, litter boxes, floors -- repeat ad infinitum. And things that need fixing that I don't have the money to fix. I'm sure when I get back to decluttering those remaining areas, some icks will jump out at me … they always do! I guess every stage has its challenges. But I'm vicariously enjoying your ick removal.

You know how FlyLady waxes lyrical about shiny sinks? Well, I like having a clear sink and all, but my nearly-white loo is a thing of joy.

I hear ya! When I'm in a not-so-great mood, I just walk into my bathroom and it's an instant high, lmao. That gleaming white toilet, the clear glass around the shower...ahhh, happy sigh...I'm loving it so much that the other night when I should've been going to bed, I took a paper towel and wiped the water droplets off the glass (after we'd used it) so that the next day it would still be perfect. I did try getting a squeegie, but didn't find one where I was shopping the other day. I hope I'm not getting an OCD type of thing going with the shower? Oh who cares, it makes me so happy to see it like that. And that toilet - wowza! It's a real thrill, after being *so* gross for *so* long. Lara, if you only knew how gross it was before, ewwww. Well beyond ick, that's all I can say - or want to admit to, rotfl.

With regards to clean shower. I made a vow when Mr Hunk and co. redid the shower at old house, part of mini-Reno and repair. I am not allowed to take a shower unless I am prepared to squeegee the tiles. I have continued this vow at the new house. I have my own squeegee in the shower area. Takes 2 minutes. I give myself the choice....shower / squeegee OR bath. I never choose bath anymore.

Today's ick is the sofa. Eurgh, it really needs a new cover but I don't know if they even sell them any more. It's generally covered with a sheet/blanket but the seat is kinda grey. It's meant to be pink... I've just pulled the cover out from behind the seat part and excavated all kinds of things, including a lost set of door keys/locker key from DD's last school... Well, last but one, I suppose. I've hoovered the cover as best I can, and I'm going to test out the mini steam cleaner I apparently bought a few years ago and forgot about...

Good luck with your sofa, shosh. I have a steam cleaner too, but never thought to use it on furniture. Let us know how it works out. What brand is yours? I'm going to clean up a ton of broken glass in the shed today. A mirror broke into a zillion pieces, and DH thought leaving it there was the best plan. I disagree! This job isn't really an ick, except that I have a great chance of dealing with mouse poop while I'm in there. That's my #1 ick.

Aiiee! Good luck with that, cyn! The sofa doesn't look significantly different (though it got up some bits of grunk that were ground into the bits of the cover that go behind the cushions) but I wasn't really expecting it to, but at least it's hopefully a bit more hygienic now. I might try some carpet cleaner on the seat part of the cover tomorrow if I feel up to it. (Theoretically I could take it off and machine wash it, but I'm not sure I'd be able to get it back on!)

good work on the sofa shosha. cyn - how did you go with the broken glass? My ick for today - well DH is working on the broken dishwasher, so he took the kitchen cabinet baseboards off. Next thing there is a loud meow from the other side of the kitchen. Yes, Ms Kitty decided to supervise, then made a dash and got under the cabinets (BTW no electricals or other unsafe stuff, just a bit of dust). She came out covered in cobwebs and ick. So I grabbed the zoom groom and brushed away all the icky cobwebs, plus quite a bit of cat fur.

cyn I have a turbo steamer, little hand-held thing, I have gotten so much done with it! Got it for $15 at the local Value Village several years ago now. Used it today to scrub clean the kitchen floor since just a mopping wasn't going to do it. Major ick now done.

Ick of the day was cleaning a grimy 50 yr old sewing machine. It's been lost in a stuffed full garage for minimum 20 yrs. Still works perfectly. Also cleaned the doors of my refrigerator. Started just wiping off the leftover dry erase marker from days past. Ended up really scrubbing them down. They look so pretty again.

Oh, sorry, I forgot to say - my steamer's a little handheld, too, it's called "mini yello", it's probably not as powerful as a bigger machine, but it weighs very little and packs away into a box about the size of a soccer ball (well, you know, but box-shaped!) It's got a little bag for all the attachments as well, so if I can't be bothered trying to fit them all into the box, I can just shove them in the bag and stack it on top of the box.
Have sprayed the sofa with carpet/upholstery Vanish, the wetness from the damp cloth I used to "work the foam in to the stain" hasn't dried yet so I can't tell for sure, but it looks irritatingly as though the bits where the spray landed (spray foam, so it kinda went on higgledy piggledy) have come up relatively clean but the bits where I just worked the foam into the fabric haven't, so there's an 'interesting' 'pattern... Oh well, it'll be covered with a sheet anyway, next time I'll try a different product, I guess.
