I found that part of the problem with my clutter, is that I have had so many paper and plastic bags around, and boxes, in order to organize, but that has become part of the problem. If you have encountered this, and you are recycling bags and boxes that have gotten crushed or wrecked while not being used - recycle them - and let's celebrate that!!

Found a small box - just 15 by 10, thought I would use it, but the corner was crushed - so I broke it down and out it goes!!
Found several bags with holes - the thick ones I thought I would use for recycle - guess what they ARE recycle now!!

nice clean sturdy boxes, especially those with lids, are my crack! They are my addiction! I am good about getting rid of the ones that are crushed and dirty.

If possible, consider breaking down the boxes you can. They take up far less space and it's easier to see how many you have. When I reach a point of having X number of a certain size box, I know that there will be more come along in that size before I use what I have so I feel OK in purging a few of my stockpile.
A little packing tape and a couple minutes and you have a sturdy box again.

I cut down a bunch of boxes last week into smaller pieces. I also flattened all my plastic. Tonight i have a 32 gal can going out for recycling. I hope they can dump it out, i really crammed it. Might have another plastic bag worth too. Then trash goes out wednesday.

Might have another plastic bag worth too. Then trash goes out wednesday. Swamped, I'm not sure what kind of trash service you have -- but would it be worth it to unpack the can a bit and put it out for the next pickup? I say this because our trash service has those trucks with arms that pick up and empty the can into the truck. No one ever checks to to see if the can actually emptied. We've had a couple times where stuff got stuck. We had to call and have them come back...which was almost by our next pickup day. Short story was that we ended up a couple times with no place to put the current week recycling. Also, depending on your provider, some will let you stack the flattened cardboard next to your can. They'll actually get out of the truck and pick it up (amazement!!!) One last thought (depending on your provider) - we found out that we were paying ONLY for trash. Trash company by contract was obligated by contract to provide recycle service. Turns out they had different size recycle cans available and the larger cans didnt' impact our trash pickup cost at all. We went for the largest allowable residential recycle bin and now have plenty of room every week!

toomuchstuph my trash company is amazing!!! Trash and recycling are included in one price, two different pickup days. I would check it but im not sure they will pick up tomorrow because of the coming snowstorm. If they do, ill put the can on the curb and loosen it a bit. If it doesnt get out of the can this week, ill make sure its unstuck for next week. Its just too cold and icy to do this week. They will also pick up stacks of cardboard and bags of cans, bottles etc. The can i own i actually my own, my bin got blown away in a storm and they forgot to replace it. My recycle guy doesn't care and i like it because i have a lid for it (which i remove before bringing out to curb) and its twice as big as the recycle bin they supply. I dont have a garage so i have to jeeo my cans outside. Having the lid on means it doesnt fill up with water. So i think ill be okay. I wash all my recyclables so theres no food residue,

Unswamping how great that you have such amazing trash service! I'd forgotten that I've seen you mention you're in an area thats expecting the big snow this week! Hopefully they'll pick up for you ;-) It's amazing what an art it is to manage trash and recycles! Our area contracts with a certain company. A city not 10 miles from here contracts with the exact same company and they have many different rules ;-) Sjavascript:popSmilies()eems a lot depends on the driver on your route too - we've had amazing ones and not so amazing ones. You obviously have a really good recycle driver! Regardless, good on YOU for getting as much out as you did today!!

toomuchstuph thank you. My trash guys are amazing. Im very lucky that my trash company is so great too. They take almost anything for recycling except hazardous waste and appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators. They will take my non working dishwasher when i can afford to get it out of the house (i need to hire help for that), i just need to call first. The recycling is one stream so i dont have to sort. BTDT. The one guy even told me hiw to set my big bin out so that when the armed truck picks it up, the lid wont break. Then he wheeled the can back up to my house and grabbed another bag of trash that i was going to put out the following week. I definitely give them six stars on a five star scale. i am a bit nervous about this snow.

Unswamping many years ago I lived in snow country. I do miss the beauty of it but confess to not missing the day to day dealings with it. Sending good wishes for you and all in your area to be safe!

MC, when I first started going through my mounds of stuff, I'd find all kinds of bags and boxes mixed in with it. I guess I brought them into the mess with good intentions, but then they got smothered by more stuff. I *just* got rid of some 'pretty' plastic bags and a whole pile of boxes that I'd been hanging onto. I think that having to move all those containers out of my doom room made me realize that I'm just making a worse problem for myself if I keep packing things up - because I never unpack them - it's a nightmare. It took me a long time to get rid of those lovely empty boxes! But now that they're gone, I feel better knowing that I won't be creating more issues down the road. I'm in a unique situation here, where my living room and laundry room are currently *really* messy, because they've got so many boxes of unsorted stuff. This is depressing me, since those rooms were awesome not long ago. So out went my boxes, when I knew they were only going to make me more miserable.
