Everyone along the NE US, please be aware and prepared for what sounds like a very serious blizzard. One meteorologist stated that it will be worse than Nemo, and worse than the blizzard of 1978.

This has me worried. I knew it was going to be a bad storm -- but the more I hear about it, the worse it sounds!

I am not overly concerned about the storm except that it will be days or even weeks without power. We do have a generator, and thankfully gas is cheap at the moment so running it won't be horrible. Also have a good wood stove. The only thing I fear during the storm is that my house is literally surrounded by trees, I don't need one crashing into the house. Snow blower is broken, though so that's a LOT of snow to shovel...best to do it in stages. Roads will be safe to drive by Wednesday afternoon. We have had a very mild winter so haven't had to tap our salt/sand trucks much this year. Our road crews in the major towns are really good, smaller towns not so much...  I am more concerned for the elderly and homeless through out the east.... |

Where I live - the snow is expected to be light and fluffy. So I am hoping we dont have trees down.
Stores were crazy sunday - people buying eggs and bread...? I managed close to a week without going to the store - and I went sunday - so I think I could manage another day or two......
WHat do YOU buy in case of an impending storm?
My first storm out on my own as an adult - well I ran to the store to get batteries. And probably eggs and bread and milk.....and everyone around me was buying chips and beer.
My storm list is batteries (if I am not already stocked up), ice if it is in the summer and I need to keep food cold.
I don;t need gas because I dont have a generator.
Sometimes I will grab food if we dont have much.
We live in a pretty suburban aea and we have never been without power for more that a day or so. Once it was 3-4 but that was only once and we went to my parents and they had power.

the eggs, milk and bread is because everyone makes french toast when it snows  Actually my thing when we get a big snow like this is ice cream. Don't know why but i have to have some in the frig and i do eat it. I am always stocked up on batteries. With cats, candles are a no-no. My old house the power used to go out frequently so im well stocked on flashlights and lanterns. Those of us who deal with these storms frequenly are usually pretty well prepared. The only advice i have is to stay off the road. Stay home and wait until the roads crews have done their job and the roads are clear. If its a real emergency, call 911. They are better prepared to come to you, then you going out. Just because you have 4 wheel drive, doesnt mean you can handle this. In big snows, its always the people in 4 wheel drive vehicles that are always getting stuck. If you do go out, bring extra gloves, socks and a blanket. Some chocolate too (the fat will help you keep warm and its good for stress). Like desiree, im more concerned about all the trees. |

I'm in SE Pennsylvania. Depending on the source, we're scheduled to get 4-8 or 9-14. Nothing like a guesstimate.

I'm always amazed that, in these conditions, people have to be told to go home and stay home. Just because you have a snow day at work, that doesn't mean you should be going to the mall, or whatever. And now, another episode from the life of bittyboo. When I was in college, I had a very short-lived job as a customer service rep for a cable tv provider. A snowstorm of then-epic proportions was forecast and everyone except those providing "essential services" was strongly advised to stay home. This directive met with my complete approval. I mean, it's not like being there to answer the phone when someone wants to gripe about their cable tv is an essentail service, right? Apparently not. My idiot employer expected everyone to show up for their regularly scheduled shifts.  I not only didn't show up, I never went back, and was waiting tables (and making more money) at the local pancake house as soon as the weather cleared. |

SetMeFree hey neighbor! I must be north or east of you. I should be getting 12-16. I think they have a better idea now about amounts then they did last night. I just checked noaa.gov and it doesnt seem as bad for us as they were predictly last night. That said, boston looks like they are getting up to 3 ft and thundersnow. bittyboo glad you left that job. Cable is not an essential service really. Ive worked for companies like that too.  if im so "essential" how about a raise? I used to work for a financial services company that was the same way. Really if someone cant get a credit report today, is anyone going to die? No? Good, i didnt think so and im not going to take my chances dying on impassable roads. Hospitals, fire, police, etc are essential. Retail stores, book publishers, financial services are not. I am always amazed that people need to be told to stay home. Ive worked hourly jobs where if i didnt work, i didnt get paid. One job i was threatened with being fired if i didny show up. Any job is replaceable, the effects of frostbite are forever. I should have stayed home. Im glad the governors and mayors are taking it seriously. NYC and boston have said no non emergency vehicles on the road after 7pm, they are shutting down public transportation. Anyone who violates that should be tossed in jail.

Eggs, bread, soymilk, catfood, water are always big ones for me in a storm. Boiled eggs in shell will last for a couple of days if electric is down. So I always have small jars of mayo, canned tuna, canned, chicken, and canned salmon in the cupboard. So with the eggs and bread it is egg salad, tuna salad, and etc. I get the small jars of mayo since depending on if it is cold or not (what type of storm hurricane or blizzard) I can open a new jar after each use. With the cold I just set the mayo out in the garage in a sheltered spot so it stays cold but not frozen.
My trip was canceled last minute due to the impending blizzard. So kitty is still at boarding. They have a huge generator there and the people live next door. I let him with tons of food, his fav bed, toys, and etc. Except for wanting him here with me, he is probably better off there. At least if the power goes he will have heat there.

Had to go to the store today to get a few things. I bought some chicken to cook for dinner tonight and a few other things. My storm go to items are apples and peanut butter. I'm wondering if I should have picked up some water just in case, but I think if I fill up the water bottles I have I should be fine. I have batteries, flashlights, candles and dog food so I'm pretty much all set. Oh and wine, I bought wine, of course.
I have today off and I'm assuming work will be closed tomorrow. So that means two days off in a row! I'm trying to work up the energy to start cleaning.

I hope that this storm turns out to be a media exaggeration like the torrential rainstorms the media predicted for SF a couple months back. It turned out to be just an ordinary storm, not at all of dire proportions as the media painted it. But nonetheless the news reports got people whipped up in a panic and swarming in the stores for supplies.
May you all be safe, and may it blow over soon.

I stay stocked up on small cans of salmon, chicken, beef, canned fruit, nut butters, nuts, cheese, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, beef jerky and water. I cook ahead bacon to go with the eggs. I buy paper plates, cups, bowls paper towels and silverware. I also keep pocket and boot warmers on hand, and plenty of lanterns and batteries. I also make sure our vehicles are full of gas before a bad storm. I keep several tarps and lots of rope and a logging chain on hand in case of roof damage or other unforseen problems, like pulling someone out of the creek Or pulling a tree off something. We also keep axes and saws handy. |

papermoon i hope you are right. I just checked my forecast and its now 10-18 inches. Im thinking it will be more 10 than 18. Very relieved the snow forecast for thursday has been changed to friday and just flurries now, no accumulation. I just hope every one stays indoors and safe.
