I'm having a really hard time getting going tonight, although I have lots to do. I'm remembering how music energized me when I was trying to declutter the other day, so I've made up a new game for myself. I have 10 areas where I need to work, all of them in the front half of the apartment where I can hear the music from my computer. I'm going to put my Media Player on random, and work for as long as a song plays in whatever area that's next on the list.
I don't expect anyone to join me on this, I know it's kind of complicated. Sometimes I need a complicated game to get me going, and I need accountability by saying here that I'm going to do it. So I'll go through the list of 10 twice, that's at least an hour of work, probably much more since I have lots of long songs on my computer. I'll come back and report after every 5 songs. We'll see how this goes!
1 LR 2 SP 3 Computer desk 4 Main desk 5 2nd BR 6 Entry/Hallway/Bathroom 7 Paperwork 8 Books 9 Financial Updating 10 End of day work
First random song that came up; That's Alright/Albert King, in the LR (I sound like I'm playing a weird game of Clue!)
Here I go...

I used to do this on another site. We would put motivating music on and dj for each other with YouTube as we did housework to get all pumped up. Good plan

Hi reb, I sometimes just put an album on and go from room to room as the song changes, but I think I need the randomness of shuffle play today!
I'm having fun so far--I emptied out my LR paper recycling container during Albert King.
We Three Kings/Amped (I forgot Christmas music was on my computer too--that's okay, I do listen to it at other times of the year) Started cleaning the cat hair off the love seat. Down Here Below/Steve Earle Printed out a label for a book to send out. Took the whole song to do it, because I had to open another browser to get it to print. Break It Up/Patti Smith Opened up some mail from the last few days Thandabantu/Solomon Linda's Original Evening Birds Cut up paper bags for book shipping
Some of these songs are short so I don't get much done, but considering I was sitting at the computer doing nothing for the prior hour, I'll take what I can get. And, I'm getting to listen to some songs I don't usually play.
Okay, next 5 songs.

Next songs:
All A Dem a Do/Noiseshaper Collected cat food dishes from hall and started soaking, then remember I wanted to do laundry, so I started a load White Christmas/Aimee Mann Went through miscellaneous little notes on my computer desk Perrodin Two-Step/Jo-El Sonnier On-line research for a book that's been sitting here, can't decide what to do with it You've Ruined Me/Norah Jones Update my senior client invoice The Line Begins to Blur/Nine Inch Nails Gave everyone fresh water and checked locks
Next 5!

Thank you Swamped, I'm having fun! I got interrupted though by a client phone call that was really long, so I have to get back to it--I'm going to try to work for another hour or so. First I have to move the laundry to the dryer, and I have some emails I have to answer. But I'll be back to finish the last set and start another one.

Okay, here's my second set:
Todii/Oliver Mtukudzi Put miscellaneous things away from the LR Pressure Drop/Toots & the Maytals Finished de-hairing the loveseat cover Who's That Girl/Eurythmics Misc. notes on desk & updated my library list D'Yer Maker/Lebanchuleh Finished going through the mail Version Girl/UB40 Started packing a book to mail Girl and the Ghost/KT Tunstall Swept the hallway, also swept the other 2 cat food areas, moved laundry to the dryer Wonderful Savior/Mavis Staples Made notes from earlier client phone call Sombras/Raul Malo Put away books from my computer desk May the Red Rose Live Always/Suzy Bogguss Updated receipts This Kiss/Faith Hill Scooped litter pans, changed garbage bag
Wow, that was really fun--and I realize how much I just play my favorite music over and over again instead of listening to the wide variety that I have. I'm going to do this again, maybe tomorrow--it's not the most efficient way to work, but I have a feeling I would have wasted the evening online if I hadn't done this.
I'm going to stop now and finish packing the book that I started, finish end-of-day jobs, and hang up the clothes from the dryer.
Thanks reb and Swamped for stopping by!

I'm glad you got a lot done. What a great assortment of music. I don't recognize most of the musician names. It does seem like a very diverse mix. I may have to check out some of these. I tend to listen to my favorite music over and over again too.

I love what you're doing. Sometimes I put my phone play list on and work on one project per song.

Great idea! I use Pandora on different channels and often hear songs I haven't heard for a long time.

diane, you are brilliant and so creative! (as are all you other folks who have thought of this method.) i love it! so much of the time i have about a 3-5 minute attention span for any one task. this could be the answer, since i do tedious things and cleaning much better to music. what a way to keep it all moving! great song list too! viva la musica!
