Boric acid works good on roaches. You can get it at the dollar store. Read the ingredients...it may go by a different name on the container. Put it in the back of your cabinets, around baseboards. They walk through it, lick it off their feet and die. As far as sprays go, Bengal is probably the best, but then you have to breathe the fumes as you spray it.
Good luck. Don't give up.

You are making great progress! Could you just tell your mother you are getting ready to move ahead of time, and want to get rid of big things? CPS mostly wants to make sure it's safe environment, so is there a place for child to sleep, is there food, no obvious safety hazards meaning no animal feces, no fire hazards, clear Walk ways. The old fashioned raid roach motels have worked well for me over the years. When You move, can you set up regular visits from your friend or sons friends, to give you motivation to keep things under control? keep us posted!

Dear Charlotte, i feel your pain about the roaches. I used to live in the city and they were just everywhere. Subway, buses, grocery stores, the street. If the neighbors got them, i always wound up with them too. The only quick way is to "fog" the house. Which would mean having to leave the house with your children and animals for a number of hours. Then you you would have to clean again. The best time to do that would be after you have gotten rid of everything you can. That would give them less places to hide from the fog.
A thought on the heavy wood shelves. You say they are gross. Are they just unattractive or is there a pet waste or other problem with them. If they are just unattractive, i would leave them for now. CPS is not Better Home and Gardens. They are not looking at how you decorate and im sure they understand if you dont have alot of money, you just use what you have.
You can do this! Focus on the important stuff.

Keeping the dishes washed somewhat helps with the roach problem. MissABCD

Thanks again all. Got the underneath of my desk cleaned! The various cords and wires make that so horrible. Forgot about boric acid, will get some. The sprays (any kind) give me a migraine, so I usually have to leave for a bit while someone else sprays, and I feel like I can't leave right now. As for the shelves, they are a favorite hangout for the roaches. They aren't particle board so I'm surprised but they are harboring there in the corners and they are very dirty looking (stained painted wood), they were in our daughter's room when she was younger and she markered all over them... I have other metal shelves on my back porch to replace these.. I think if I can figure out how to get them out of here and thrown away it will be faster than the other option (cleaning the hell out of them and painting them). I am trying to get rid of anything the roaches seem to like.

MissABCD yes indeed! We switched to paper months ago (paper plates).. but unfortunately ignored what was piled up before that switch. So they are here from the dishes piled up and the various kitchen trash.

The cats are TOTALLY freaking out. My ultra sensitive boy especially (cats like him are why we have the term "fraidy cat").. He has a prescription diet that is very expensive. It won't hurt the other cats but I cannot afford to feed all three of them what he gets, so I feed him separately in another room away from the other 2 cats, and that was the room we got done early on. It was chaos, a repository sort of room, with piled up miscellaneous, a box springs on the floor, a box springs up against the wall, a broken chair.. anyway now it looks like a real room with the bed set up and a rug down and lamp, chair in the corner.. he gets fed in there and he is hating it! Came in and looked around and ran right back out. They'll all be happy when they have more room to run though!

Of course be careful with any roach treatments especially with cats. One member here, hope, who had to deal with inspections, would put a sheet over a soiled chair or a spot on the floor to hide a stain or dirt. She also arranged her bags of stuff to look like a bed and put a sheet over it. Just thoughts.

On a slightly humorous note, I must say that no matter how many times I do this, I am always amazed to discover how much stuff can fit under a 8" space under a standard sized wooden desk!
Sudafed (yay! I am congested due to all the dust stir up but didn't want to go get some), legos (?? my sons are 17 and 22 and haven't had legos in forever, daughter doesn't have any), a full size stretchy net that goes in the trunk of your car to stretch across the back, a heat gun, a silk scarf... it boggles my mind.

can you post an offer of "free scrap metal" on craigslist (for the box springs) In our area, someone would pick those babies up in a heartbeat.

ohblondie, I totally forgot about the scrap metal folks! I know it sure can't hurt to post something!! Thanks! In the past I've been the queen of decluttering by giving stuff away on Craigslist but I didn't even THINK of it this time. That's why I needed to post here.. I am not thinking straight at all due to stress so it's so helpful to have clear-thinking people to give input.

joyinvirginia; Unfortunately no. Landlord is ridiculous about anything outside anywhere in the trailer park that belongs "inside". I tried to give away a working clothes dryer once and kept having to put it in my van when he complained, then pull it out when someone said they wanted it, then back in the van when they didn't show up.
