I (finally) got around to listing four antique boxes for sale online. I got a reply and the guy came and bought one of them, and called later and made me an offer for the remaining ones. They are nice antique boxes, the kind with writing slopes or dressing table sets inside, and I'm selling them on Monday to this bloke for around forty euro each. He's going to resell them for more; I shouldn't hold onto them, right? I have that classic hoarder thing of thinking about the people who gave me them and of wanting to wait for a better price - but I haven't given them a thought in years and never look at them, so logically I think I would be better off to let them go... I would love some encouragement as I'm not sure about this. Sorry to ask.

Have you checked the price at auction sites, to make sure he's not offering you WAY less than he should? It's normal to sell things to dealers for less, they have to make a profit, and if you sold them yourself you'd have to spend time looking for buyers. So it's fine to get less than he'll sell them for, you just don't want to make sure he's way out of line with his offer.

Oh, and as far as getting rid of them, yes! If you haven't thought about them, you haven't been enjoying them--might as well let them go to someone who'll enjoy looking at them every day! And getting some cash for them is a bonus.

Yes, you're doing the right thing.
Even if the man is paying you less than market value, some money is better than no money, and the boxes will no longer be taking up valuable space in your home.

You may be undercharging but there is a lot to be said for just getting them out of the house. Good for you letting go of them.

Unless the 40€ is a pittance, it sounds like a good choice. Especially if any repairs need to be done before they'll be sold for more. Great job immaculata for getting them out of your house! It's so easy to hold onto 'nice' things. Thank you for this thread. I've had to make the same type of decisions. It's not easy.

Also what dtesposito said about if the reduced rate is anywhere in range.

The problem with anything antique or collectible is you have to find the buyer. It doesn't matter how beautiful or "mint" the item is, it's worth nothing if you can't find a buyer. This guy bought your boxes. good. They are out of your living space and you even got some money for them. Don't worry about him ripping you off and re-selling them for a lot more.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the support. I checked the offered amount was okay for the boxes, and although it was low it wasn't unfair. I did sell the boxes to the bloke and although they were lovely, ultimately they weren't useful to me so I am glad to see the back of them and have some space freed up. Thanks again! You guys are brilliant.
