This is amazing to me, the 8 minute thing! I just found this site last week and because I'm busy painting the outside of my home and garage I am spending as much time every day that I can on that project. So I thought I would not be able to really begin decluttering in earnest until I am finished painting. (Don't dare stop the painting because then I'll probably never get it done!)
But from reading this thread, I now know that I can begin working on my messes in small increments of time here and there! So thank you to each one of you for the ideas I've already gleaned here.
When I got home today I emptied the dishwasher. Did not set a timer because that is an ongoing frequent chore, but did watch to see how long it took. Well, you guessed it, 8 minutes exactly! I took that as a confirmation.
Just now took some "before" pix of my worst trouble areas in the house. My starting point.
Oh, a question...what are "peeps" that I see mentioned in some of the threads?
Thanks. I'll be back here from time to time.

Hi peaceandfreedom! PEEP basically means picking up and putting away. It stands for a Place for Everything and Everything in its Place. Because it's amazing, when you give your stuff permanent homes, then picking up doesn't involve a million decisions, it's just putting things back where they belong. I am working on making sure that my places are big enough, so I'm not trying to cram 5 ft of books on 3 ft of bookcase, for example.

Thank you, Wit. Another great concept to learn about. I hear you, loud and clear, about trying to put 5' of books into 3'. I dread cleaning out my books, will leave that till I've been able to develop some " throwing out" muscles first!
Looking forward to getting to PEEP someday. But what I think I'm learning here is that I have to get rid of a lot of stuff before that can fully happen. Baby steps!
Last evening I set the timer for 8" and cleaned out the drawer where plastic bowls and lids live. Actually threw out a bunch of lids without bowls and other bowls without lids. In the past I always kept some of them, thinking that the missing piece would eventually turn up. Now, I just see them as clutter and they are outta here! To me, that is progress. It actually took 10" to do. (Had I made a guess about how long I thought this would take, I would have said a half hour or so. Another revelation!)

Between being busy out of the house, and overdoing it on those 2 days, which made my back fairly scream, I've not been doing nearly as well as I had been. The idea of figuring out what comes next or WIT was just too overwhelming. But I figured I could do 8 min. I did 8 min yesterday, sorting laundry, 8 min this morning sorting laundry, and 8 min this morning, picking up trash, and putting things away in the bathroom.

Thanks peaceandfreedom! That was the reason I picked the name - I figured I'd HAVE to live up to it. How did you do in the kitchen, Serendipity? I have a LOT of things to do, and much of it is online. Been sitting in the chair for approx. 90 min. Setting the timer for 8 min. I'll report back with my "ta-da"

Well, it isn't much but in a bit over 8 minutes I brushed my teeth, washed my face & pulled my hair back. At least I was out of the chair & moving. Setting the timer for an hour of online work, then I'll do another 8 min.

Before my timer rang, Firefox crashed, and I decided to shut down the computer & restart, I used the downtime to dance around just a bit to a song, then picked up a small area of the living room floor - a few toys, but mostly trash - junk paper, etc. Then I worked for a full hour online, and followed that with sorting the remainder of the laundry - I think that took about 15 minutes.
