I have granted myself book amnesty! This is a tough one for me, but it needed doing. I needed to allow myself amnesty because I was struggling to let go of any of my books - reading has been such a huge part of my life. I collected up a whole laundry basket of books that are in good enough condition to donate to the library. But I have thrown away three full garbage bags of books that I no longer wanted to read that were not suitable for anyone else (mold, water damage, torn covers/missing pages, etc.) .. I am proud of myself, as heartbreaking to get rid of them, but they needed to go to make space (not for more books though, I read mostly on my tablet now) I've held on to four small collections of books that I re-read on a regular basis: Clan of the Cavebear, V.C. Andrews Heaven series, Little House on the Prairie and few of Chris Hart's drawing books. Wow, that was a lot to go out the door!

great job. I have a hard time purging books too. Sometimes it just needs to be done. Congrats on biting the bullet and doing the hard stuff.

June? Is that you? I recognised your fox. Wow, you have done a great job getting so many books out. Do you mean you kept only those four book series you mentioned? And you kept only The Clan of the Cavebear, or all the Earth Children series? You are amazing. I can not imagine having so few books. I always wish I had more space for them. I have about 250 (not counting those for young children, I keep them for when my niece comes to visit) and I could not live with less.

I still can not get over how few books you kept. It must be less than 20 now. Unbelievable.

That's great, well done. I used to have a big struggle getting rid of books. I am not quite as bad as I used to be and can dump books that are un-readable and donate ones I have read instead of keeping them just incase I wanna read again. :-)

Oh, man-I'm missing most of my books S.o. says they're not in storage (we have a unit to store our washer and dryer while we rent), but they MUST be. The thought of them mouldering away makes me incredibly anxious. Your post prompted me to call and ask him to swing by there and check. I'm worried that I will finally find them and have to do what you did-trash them. But congrats on doing such a difficult thing. And on the library donation. I'm ALL about donating. Hopefully they'll be appreciated by members of the library as much as they were by you. Ok...the s.o. brought in a bin of books (I KNEW they were in storage!) and I'm about to grow through them with great trepidation. The picture he brought out of storage as well was ruined, so here's hoping *fingers crossed* EDIT: My beloved books are OK! Thank goodness I had to foresight to put in cat litter crystals. Ah, I was sooo relieved! And, following WhyNot's lead, I put aside some to sell (and donate if they don't) and some for s.o. to read if he so chooses (otherwise, I will be getting rid of them as well). Some of my books are in pretty shabby condition and should probably be tossed as well, but I want to actually replace them before I do.

As someone who works as a volunteer at a library, I want to *THANK* you folks for **NOT** donating the moldy, musty books!!
Had you not disposed of them, someone at the library would have had to do the job.
Books in good--even just "fair" or "decent" condition--are much appreciated, however.

Amazing! It takes nerves of steel to get rid of books.
(Also, may I ask what you thought of the last in the Clan of the Cave Bear series?)
My local library now has a 'Free Books' shelf near the inside of the front door, where one can leave books one wants to give away, and where the librarians can freecycle books that are surplus to requirements. Pretty good idea.

immaculata - I haven't read the last book, I'm afraid too .. .. I've heard nothing but bad things. My favourite is The Valley of the Horses though. Least favourite is Plains of Passage. How about you? Also, I love that freecycle book idea. If my library doesn't have that, I'll suggest it to them

anewleaf so glad and proud that I motivated you Way to go! I have my bin of books loaded in the car to bring to the library tomorrow Arid you're welcome. Yes, I didn't think it would be a good idea to make it someone else's problem to get rid of them -- or worse, make someone sick!
