needmorecoffee, Here is a link to the Hoarding Fact Sheet (<-- clickable link) from the International OCD Foundation. Here is a link by Dr. Randy Frost, one of the pioneers in the study of hoarding on the Causes of Hoarding (<--clickable link) Diagnosing Hoarding - DSM V (<---clickable link) This links you to the Hoarding Site @ IOCDF. Check out the additional links under the About Hoarding section at the top of that page for more information too!

Dr. Frost has written a book with his co-researcher, Gail Steketee. It's called Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things. Also found a link to old interview on npr.com, Dr Frost was interviewed on Fresh Air radio show. www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126386317Matt Paxton, my favorite cleaner on Hoarders tv show, has a book. The Secret Lives of Hoarders. 5decisionsaway.com Hope this helps!

I would also recommend the book:
Helping Hoarders: A Guide for Families, Counselors, and First Responders by Mark A. Chidley LMHC
I have noticed that there are lots more books out about hoarding. I suspect that some of these are self-published and may or may not have reliable, accurate information regarding what is typical for the disorder (however much any of us is "typical"). I would be careful making sure that you are getting good info, as you originally requested - something researched and science based, not "one person's experience" which may or may not be representative. I think the links and books suggested thus far are excellent resources.
I have a "rational" friend who still struggles to understand. It is not an issue that can be easily solved just by me trying to be more "rational".... and this is hard for most folks to understand, rational or not.

Overcoming Compulsive Hoarding (available in paperback or on kindle) has a good section explaining it.
