I worked several more hours on the paper horde. Getting there slowly.

A lot of scanned documentation can be found now on Ancestry.com. I've worked on genealogy sporadically for over 40 years now. I've finally decided to scan all pictures, put some in a scrapbook, dump the rest, and only keep original paperwork for my direct line. I use the computer extensively for data storage and document linkage. Hope this helps a little.

Diane58, that is a subject for my personal paper horde, which I haven't touched yet. What I am working on now is research for a book that will be published by the historical society that I am a member of. Paperwork that didn't belong to me was taking over my home and I just finally got fed up and decided I was going to have to put my big girl pants on and do whatever I had to do to get rid of all this paper. Life has really gotten in the way of my research the last 3 years. Now I have some time and I really want rid of all this paper.

Up at 3:30, made coffee and wasted some time on computer. Then I worked on the paper horde a couple of hours. 95% of the business deeds are filed and ready to make notes for business section of book. I'm almost to the end of this mess. I'm afraid that there are more lurking somewhere and I'm almost afraid to look.
I have more confidence today that I will make my Thursday deadline for getting this paper horde out of my house. Last night I wasn't so sure.

Up at 1:30 this morning, back to sleep at 4:30 up at 6a.m. when the school bus back up beeps at the neighbor's house. Today I pulled out even more historical society paper. There is paper everywhere. I have a lot of typing to do that I simply cannot get done by noon tomorrow, but I do have a LOT of it ready to leave my house. I think I will be left with a small stack that will take a few more days to work through and they are already in file folders. I printed out the latest research and had to stop to go to town for more ink. The printed items have holes punched and are in the proper notebook ready for tomorrow's meeting. I'm really looking forward to loading up the truck with the paper horde tomorrow.

Wow! Makes me tired to read about your progress! Great job!

Today is the day when lots of the paper horde leaves the house! I will load up the truck before lunch and see what I have left to deal with. Right now I have emptied one entire shelf of a bookcase, one letter size file box (well it is full right now for transport, but will be empty when I bring it home this afternoon) and half of another file box. I've thrown away a lot of paper and found some personal receipts and bank statements that I plan on filing this morning before I loose them again.
Except for the typing, after today I'm going to take a rest on the papers for a while and concentrate on getting my coffee table and kitchen table clear again. I've also junked up the kitchen counters and that is bothering me too.

I managed to get rid of approximately 80 to 85% of the paper horde. I had to retain some of it because of continuing research and writing up the results. At least it is in order and I can take a section, write it up and move it out of my house once a week. The access to our archives right now is only on Wednesdays, so Wednesday it will be. That gives me another deadline and right now I need them. Today I'm going out for a fun lunch with some dear friends, so I'll start back on the smaller horde tomorrow.

Congrats on doing a wonderful job on this project. It is not only a physical accomplishment but also a lot of mental gymnastics to sort it all out!
I've done more genealogy this week than I have in several years, working with a cousin on trying to solve some of the mysteries we've had for years on our family lines. We are working together via email, and it's been fun too, as only a genealogist can understand that word! We are making progress.

I know I accomplished a lot, but there are still things lying around everywhere. I HAVE to get this straightened up. I can't stand much more of this. I don't know why it is, but this stuff has been laying around for years and all of a sudden I think I can't stand any more. It really makes me wonder about my mind sometimes.

Wednesday is here and I am not quite ready to take another load to the archives. I wound up doing other things and did not really settle down with the latest chapter till yesterday and the laundry mat. I worked 3 hours last night on the business deed stack and made quite a bit of progress. My kitchen table is still a mess. I think I am going to clean it off and just have one stack of papers at a time on it, work through them and get another stack. I hope the new plan does not evolve into 'out of sight, out of mind' but I can't stand the sight of all this anymore. I need the public rooms of my house to be neat and currently it is not. I usually don't do any outside work in the mornings because it is so wet, so I need to take that time to work on the house. I have one more batch of grape jelly to make and I think I can clear all canning 'stuff' out of the kitchen for the time being. Getting the paper off the kitchen table, the couch, the coffee table and the loveseat will help tremendously.

I'm glad you've got a helper with this imamess. It's been a long haul as this thread chronicles. Sounds like you are nearing the end and you won't ever have to see those papers anywhere in the house again. I hope your work is appreciated by your community. Will the information be bound like a book with you as principal author, or are you working on one section of a larger reference book?

It will be a bound book. The 'committee' is working on a section at a time, then the editing will be done. I'm just ready to get this off my plate. History buddy that is helping said that I'm really fired up and whatever caused it, he is glad.
It's just like the house, I suppose. I let it go and let it go and suddenly I'm completely fed up and finally get off my duff and do something about it. I've always considered myself a poor housekeeper since there is always something more pressing or more interesting than doing maintenance. I just can't seem to get it in my head that if I spent 30 to 60 minutes a day on house maintenance it just wouldn't get so bad.

Dear imamess, I hope that you are happy. You HAD to start talking about genealogy... so of course I was "forced" to dig out my decades old research and to renew my subscription to Ancestry.com, and start dragging out photos and scanning them in, and heading to the library for a course in research sources that are available today... Which lead to the purchase of more flash drives, and paper mess on my bed as I have started dragging out old photos to get scanned into the program.. Sigh... Why Do I do these things? Can't i just blame it on you? *knowing that it is NOT your fault, I have 20 years worth of half-done stuff.... I certainly cannot blame THAT on you. But seriously you did motivate me to get started again. I'm enjoying the dig. So Thanks.

I enjoy it too, but it has turned into a job with all of the pressures, deadlines, deadbeats and sometimes politics that goes on in a regular job. That part is not fun. This is not like family genealogy that I can pursue when the notion strikes me and will probably work on it as long as my mind will let me. There are old people in our community that were promised this book nearly 40 years ago and were bitterly disappointed when it didn't happen and I was too. I took up this challenge 9 years ago, never realizing that it would take this long or that people that seemed eager to help would back out, move away, stop attending, etc., etc.
I've really got a headache from spraying at the farm today. I'm going to take a shower and work on the paper horde for an hour or two if my head will let me.
