I hate throwing away single socks especially if they are cute socks or really comfy socks. Which is how I ended up with a small laundry basket full of socks! A small basket that keeps being moved around the bedroom because I will get around to sorting socks soon! This basket has been in the bedroom at least for six months, the last time I attacked the dock problem and did whittle it down. So tonight while watching tv, I brought the basket downstairs and dh helped me and we ended up with about eighteen pairs of socks matched! And about twenty four single unmatched socks. This is the end for these socks! Cute or not, They are officially in a rag bag for the dh to use as cleaning rags for his bicycle or any tasks he does. And I have an empty laundry basket and more usable socks in my sock drawer and his sock drawer. Hooray! But where, oh where, do the lost socks go? Is there a black hole in my dryer? Are the house elfs rebelling? Does the unattended paper on the counter use sock molecules to reproduce? Is there a sock eating gremlin living in the walls? Anyone have a better theory?

The socks come to life when they get static cling and run off to become sock puppets. Honest

I swear there is a sock hoarding monster in my walls that only comes out when I'm asleep or not at home.

Reminds me of my junior year in college... I was waiting for a new apartment off-campus, so I stayed on-campus with my boyfriend for 2 weeks. We put my kitty's catbed underneath our bed. When I moved out, I reached under to pull out her bed, and a whole slew of dirty odd socks came with it. NONE of the socks were ours! Evidently she had been roaming the halls (we all left our doors open in those days) and she had dragged other students' dirty socks from their rooms and hoarded them under our bed. Ew! We never let on... just dumped the pile in the hallway and hoped everybody could sort it out.

Does the unattended paper on the counter use sock molecules to reproduce? Yes. This.

When I cleaned out the girls room, I found 37 missing odd socks. Unfortunately not one of them matched any in the whole carrier bag of odd socks I have in the kitchen. That's when I gave up and threw them all away.

I have a dozen white socks with a band of color around the top. None of them match. I am about to give up and just wear them, at least they are all white and all the same style. But those mismatched colors make me crazy.

But those mismatched colors make me crazy. My DD, 19, has been wearing her socks like that for years. I think it's a thing among teenagers.

I can't find ladies socks big enough for my feet. Sock manufacturers seem to think that all women have little feet. Obviously they haven't met my family. Mostly I wear men's socks with boots and work shoes, but sometimes I would like to have pretty socks and they are not available in my size and where I shop.

One time I had a pattern to make a doll sweater from a sock. I had some adorable single socks kicking around and I kept thinking that I would make a 2nd sweater and give one away... I finally tossed them. Never take up a hobby that requires the use of a single sock, it's too hard to toss out the 2nd one.

When I do laundry (nearly ever day) I match up the socks the best I can. Any "leftovers" get thrown under my bed, near the foot on my side. About once in six months, I'll pull out all the odd socks and match up whatever I can,the rest get tossed. My hubby once complained because I mated up two patterned argyle socks that were different colors. Once when I pulled out the odd socks, and every one was part of a pair! Mind you, this happened ONCE in 35 years!

I just emptied my sock drawer into a laundry basket. It pretty much filled a laundry basket. Generally when I buy socks, I usually buy about five or six identical pairs. This makes it much easier to match things up. I also limit myself to white, tan and black socks.

I do what gifted does. I limit my sock to one brand, one type in white, tan and blue. I dont really maych socks now. I lay the socks flat in three stacks in my drawer (one color per stack). Then the top two socks are a pair. Clean socks get put on the bottom of the stack so they get rotated. So i never worry if there is an odd number of socks in a stack.

So I also wear men's sizes in boots and shoes and socks. I sometimes get get feminine styles by looking on Amazon. I can sometimes find shoes that are clearance priced. It does take time to shop this way. And I try to stick to brands that I am familiar with, especially Clark's. I think it may be that manufacturers which make different widths also tend to be higher quality.

I usually buy white ankle socks for summer and black crew socks for winter (for work mostly) but I also have a few other socks in blue, brown etc. Then recently I discovered thin wool compression knee-high socks for work, wonderful!! They are a little thicker so they don't get holes or runs like hose socks do. So I am back to matching socks. But I store those socks with my uniforms and hang them to dry so hopefully I won't lose too many. I once sorted many socks into zip lock bags, all the browns and tans together, all the blues together, all the greens together etc etc. I finally gave up and threw them away. I guarantee you that as soon as you do that, you will start finding the mates!
