One of my "successful" store enough for the apocalypse & I actually eat it item has been canned fruit like peaches.
If you have several children this may not be practical but one thing that has worked well is I gave my son his own cabinent of items he likes or likes to cook. Trail mix, mac& cheese, his peanut butter, all go in there. I can easily see if he is low on one of his favorites.
From being too ill to go to the store for months in the past, my best advice is have cash for delivery, and try to have a small stash of items you need, for me it was Coke. Hindsight I wish I had a pre-made a list to give or tell someone else to buy.

dtesposito Diane, I just read that those pantry moth larva can be brought into the house via birdseed. Just letting you know in case you hadn't thought of that.

Oh yes Sue, the moths love bird seed! And birds throw seed all over the place, so it's always around. Bird seed stays fresher in the fridge, so I always store mine in there, but on my last seed order I had to get pigeon seed too, and that won't fit in the fridge--so I'm going to have to figure out a secure way to store it.
Of course, there's always dry cat food out too, so there's plenty of food for moths. The trick is to see where they lay eggs and get rid of them before they hatch. Not easy to do.
Today, I had another veggie burger for dinner, since I enjoyed it so much last night. For lunch I had leftover hummus.
Just this morning I was thinking that no one has given me any food the last several days, and when I got to my senior client's house she had gone shopping today--she gave me 4 sliced of bread (I ate 2 of them with the veggie burger), 5 tiny clementines (ate one) and it was so funny--I tried to eat leftover tortilla chips here yesterday but they were stale--well, she had purchased a bag of "soy and flax" tortilla chips and said that she ate some and they had no taste whatsoever, so she gave me almost the full bag!! I ate a few of them when I came home, and they were DELICIOUS! Not spicy, but basic and good. Not too salty either, I hate overly salty chips. So...more food in. But I think it'll all get eaten. I LOVE clementines!

I brought the church youth Apple picking last month.....or maybe it was in September. regardless......I picked waaaay too many apples. I had plans for those apples. apple sauce, apple pies, apple coffee cake. well as usual I ended up with puddles from rotten apples and fruit flies. I took one bag and cut up the good apples and made apple sauce. it smells so yummy. maybe a pie in awhile..

Hi ohblondie - homemade apple sauce sounds good, and apple pie even better. Diane - do you think a panty moth trap would help? I have seen them locally and they have a lure to attract the male moths, and control the population this way? I feel that I need to be accountable on this thread, to get my pantry issues sorted. We did an audit last year, and found there were 27 tins of salmon on hand - some large, some small. I have been working my way through the salmon. I also had 2 packs of polenta - odd for someone who doesn't cook polenta. One was on the verge of expiring, so I have used it up with my cornbread experiments. Of course, this resulted in me going out and buying more stuff - jalapeno chillies and sauce, tinned black beans and jalapeno cheese..... The other pack of polenta was way past the use by/best by date for even me, who is pretty flexible about these things, so I am experimenting with using it as natural ant control. Only, the little wood doves decided they really like stale polenta - who knew? Then it rained. So I will need to get bird proof containers to hold the polenta and watch the weather forecast. It might just be easier to toss... I currently have stockpiles of chia seeds, quinoa and lentils*, so I plan to experiment with some new recipes using those ingredients. (*these are just the excess items I am aware of, but it is quite possible there are more stockpiles lurking in the depths of the pantry.)

Hello jendela, nice to see you here!
Today I had yet another veggie burger, I really like this kind, they're called Dr. Praeger's California Burgers. This is one item I would like to always have in the freezer as a staple. (In a reasonable amount, of course....) And then I had hummus and the free tortilla chips I got yesterday!

Diane - do the CA burgers keep their shape? I'm always interested in good veggie burgers but I like ones that don't fall apart when you pick up the bun which is my main complaint at most restaurants. Wiped down the fridge yesterday and threw away A LOT of food. DH thought our fridge was broken because it wasn't cooling and water was pooled on the floor. So he moved everything to the extra fridge which is much smaller and threw away a bunch of my freezer stuff. Turns out the freezer door wasn't closed properly so lost most of the freezer goods, some fridge goods and paid a repairman Moved what was left back to the main fridge yesterday (after wiping it down). Threw away a lot of old veggies - all that was salvageable was a head of cauliflower. Need to go grocery shopping. FYI - I was traveling during all of this which is why it all fell onto DH. PC

Last night I made a list of the bare bones basics that I needed at the store but I could not go as my car was still at the shop. Thank goodness because I checked my account and I am overdrawn! That has not happened in a long time........ Good thing I had cans of soup to fall back on...

I've made DH chili twice this week. It's at least using up my stock of Rotel and I have one recipe next weekend requiring another can, so that will just leave me with 1.
I'll probably make spaghetti tonight. That will use up some pasta and sauce from the pantry, last 1/2 of the box of garlic biscuits from the freezer, and the last of the frozen ground turkey I had in the freezer. I'll check the fridge - there might be a bell pepper in there - need to either use it or chunk it.

I think this is one area we all fear/struggle with when getting rid of stuff - how do you balance not having too much or wasting food, but also take advantage of sales/times of more money to buy enough things so that when your balance is low, you are sick, or the weather is bad, you have enough stuff at home.

I didn't report yesterday, but I did eat the crockpot squash dish for dinner--I think I had a peanut butter sandwich for lunch. Today I had a toasted cheese sandwich for lunch, and for dinner, a new crockpot dish. Before I went out for late afternoon work, I threw a bunch of miscellaneous stuff in the crockpot--a can of vegetable soup, a can of veggies that my sister gave me, half a small can of corn, leftover garbanzo and black beans from the last crockpot effort, and leftover fresh veggies from the fridge--half a zucchini and half a tomato, chopped. I added a little dry dill, dry all purpose seasoning, and some celery seed. By the time I came home a couple of hours later everything was hot and ready to eat, since nothing really had to cook. This way I have something to alternate with the other crockpot dish, of which I still have 2 servings. And, I used up stuff from the pantry, fridge and freezer. My pantry really is looking emptier--and, today I also threw a few more food items away. One was a package of crackers that looked all crumbly, I couldn't tell if it was natural or if it was moths, but I threw it away. So, I'm getting there! Then, I just have to stay there. No new purchases either, although I do need bagels again. Diane

Here are a couple good and cheap and filling recipes. For cabbage, get an oblong baking dish and cut up a cabbage and put it in there. Open a can of corned beef. Not hash, just corned beef. Crumble it up and put it on top of the cabbage. Pour a can of cream of potato soup over it and maybe half a can of milk. Cover with aluminum foil and bake on about 400 until the cabbage is soft.
Another recipe that goes good with that is scotch eggs. Boil and peel some eggs. Get a roll of ground sausage and make two large thin patties per peeled egg. Put them on each side of the egg and pinch to seal. Roll in bread crumbs and deep fry. This goes well with the cabbage.
As for my pantry, what I buy every month, here is my list. Finally.
Whole roasting chicken Chicken legs, breasts, thighs Beef roast Ham Pork roast 12 double trays of ground hamburger meat ground veal ground pork Pork chops Stew meat Cube steak Sausage in a long link such as Zeigler's Old Plantation Italian Sausage Frozen chicken fingers Frozen Steak Umms 8 packs lunch meat 4 packs sliced cheese block cheddar and mozzerella, provelone, feta, romano and parmesean for cooking bacon roll sausage hot dogs cream cheese potatoes onions minced garlic in jar bell pepper asparagus squash whole tomatoes green beans apples bread hamburger buns hot dog buns sandwich rolls coffee peanut butter jelly ice cream frozen fries two large frozen entrees for when I don't want to cook frozen dumplings Frozen stir fry in bags Nutella 24 large cans tomatoes, half petite diced, half crushed Velveeta tomato paste ketchup mayo yellow mustard grey poupon hot dog chili cole slaw dressing assorted pastas (spaghetti, fetuccinni, penne, ziti, manicotti, lasagna) jar white sauces for emergencies jar gravy for emergencies manwich spam tuna can corn pimemntos canned mushrooms lipton onion soup mix golden mushroom soup cream of mushroom soup cream of potato soup cream of celery soup canned baked beans porn and beans chili beans rice in a bag rice a roni potato side dishes in boxes for emergencies yeast flour sugar powdered sugar corn starch baking soda baking powder Taco dinner kit with shells and seasonings lettuce canned refried beans cocoa chocolate chips and other additives marshmellows crisco in the can oil olive oil pam vanilla other flavorings basil oregano parsley crushed red pepper cream of tarter poultry seasoning cajun seasoning soul food seasoning salt pork eggs milk coffee creamer heavy whipping cream heavy bavarian buttermilk sour cream real butter (10 lbs - unsalted) ricotta cheese plain yogurt flavored yogurt for snacks canned white beans for pasta anchovies eggplant mac and cheese in boxes for emergencies bbq sauce grits cereal dried apples to cook for breakfast family size tea bags koolade cokes chips cookies or snacks olives
Thats what I buy and it feeds us for a month. I can cook so many different things with just those items. I buy more vegetables than that, but I go back and get them closer to time I'm going to cook them. You can really make so many things with this. This is basically what I have on hand every month. I also get hamburger helper as well for when I don't want to cook and also some Banquet box dinners with everything in the box. You can make so much more than you think you can from just those items. And you can bake all kinds of desserts too.

Jendela, here is a lentil curry recipe
Boil the lentils with some sliced potatoes and onions. Drain it. Add one can of crushed tomatoes and some english peas and curry powder. Lots of curry powder. Serve over rice with plain yogurt blended with cucumber.
You can also make lentil strogonoff too. Start the same way with boiling them with potatoes and onions and then draining. Don't add tomatoes, but add some worstershire sauce and salt and pepper. Serve over noodles with sour cream. Also add paprika if you like.
