**EDIT**
This survey is now closed. Thank you very much to all who took part, your responses will really help shape the research and have made a big difference.
I will be glad to post the results of the research when these have been finalized. At the moment phase two of the research, which involves interviews, is still ongoing. This could be as much as a year before I am able to post any results, but it will hopefully be sooner.
I have asked the administrators to unpin this post and will not be checking the forum in the future. If you have any questions about the research please email them to: gy10ajm@leeds.ac.uk and I will be happy to reply to you.
Thanks again to all those who were able to take part.
Best wishes, Alex

Hello, My name is Alex Miller, a PhD researcher from the University of Leeds, and I’d like to invite you to take part in an online questionnaire as part of my research study on the everyday lives of people who are hoarders. The research will look at the experiences and practices of people who hoard. It will explore how hoarders think about their homes, and how they think about and relate to objects. This research is trying to find out more about the everyday reality of life as a hoarder and comes from a social sciences perspective. The questionnaire is hosted on a secure site and all your answers will be kept anonymous. There are 10 open-ended questions which ask you to write about your life and your experiences. It should take around an hour for you to complete. You can save and come back to the questionnaire at any time. Your answers will only be read by me and my academic supervisors. The data will not be passed to any third parties. Anonymised extracts may be presented in my PhD or in publications in academic journals. This questionnaire is the first phase of my research. After completing the questionnaire you will be given some information about the second phase, which you are also invited to take part it. This is more in-depth and involves two or three interviews and a video project. Together this study will form the basis of my PhD and will also be published in academic journals. I will also look to use the information to help hoarding support charities by informing them of my findings. If you have any questions about the research, or would like to know more, please either post your query in the comments below or email me at: gy10ajm@leeds.ac.uk If you want to take part in the survey please follow the link below: Thank you,

May I ask how do you define "hoarders"?

Hi Cando. That's a good question. For me I don't want to define anyone as anything, so really my answer would be that a 'hoarder' is someone who sees themself as a hoarder. One of the things I'm trying to see in my work is how people use or reject labels like that and what it means to them.
Hope that makes sense!

I just did the survey. It took me about 15 minutes to complete. I didn't write essays for every question, just the basics.
Hope this is useful.

Thank you Alex!
I think participating in these surveys gives me as much insight into my problem as you get from analyzing the answers.
When I answered the question about goals this was part of my answer:
"I would like to be able to organize the things that are most important to me, and clear out the rest and have a home that looks inviting that I can be proud of."
Thanks for asking these questions and getting me thinking.

I'll do it. I consider my self a partially reformed hoarder, like "recovering" alcoholic is never cured totally.

I will do the survey when it's a more reasonable hour than 1 a.m. (Maybe you'd like to study our sleep patterns, too!)
I like to participate, because I feel like I am.at least contributing SOMETHING tto help hoarders and their families in some way. If I can't clean up my own mess and help my family, maybe I can at least contribute to data that will help someone.
