Well, this avoiding sugar thing is a whole lot tougher than I thought. So far I am batting zero.

Bobolink, I agree with Ima, in her post she said she cut down over time and it was easier. I've read of people having headaches and feeling jittery while trying to stop sugar cold turkey, so I think it would be a lot easier to cut down slowly, if you can figure out how to do that. You could actually estimate how many grams of sugar you're eating in a day, reduce that a little, then stop when you get to your limit. Then reduce it every week or so. I think I might do that at some point, because my sugar intake has crept up over the last year, and I would love to reduce it. There was a time I was eating almost no sugar, and although I don't know if I can get back to that, I'd love to eat less of it.
Good luck, whichever way you try!
Diane

Openwindows and redallie,, congrats on getting your first challenge done!
Hi calypso!
Well, today is the first day of the first week for me, and I think I'm going to start out with the easy challenge of drinking 3 pint bottles of water every day. I used to drink 6 a day in the summer and 4 a day in the winter, now I'm down to between 1 and 2 a day. I also drink other liquids, mainly diet soda, but that's full of chemicals and I would prefer to be drinking more water and less soda. So, this week I'll drink 3 bottles a day and later work up to 4. Some days it's easy for me to drink enough when I'm concentrating on it, I just leave the bottle somewhere in plain sight and I remember to keep taking sips from it. The challenge will be the days when I'm a little busier.

This is a great idea. I'm not too good at long term resolutions!! openwindows that sounds like quite a challenge getting the two children to share a space! Especially with such different characters too. My DD hates getting rid of stuff too, I think it is territorial in some way, because she shares a room with her step sister. bobolink, it's really hard to give up sugar. Do you still have lots of Christmas goodies left? I need to cut down drastically, but it's not going to happen while there's still so much chocolate left from Christmas sitting around tempting me ! dtesposito, well done on the water drinking. Will you keep us updated on how it makes you feel if it's an improvement? I know that I don't drink enough, but I don't know what difference it would make if I did. I'm going to try and eat more vegetables for this coming week. That should be manageable, just for a week. We all really like them, and as we're all veggie most of our meals used to be mainly vegetables but for some reason recently I've got out of the habit of preparing them, and gone for prepared meals instead. So, I'm thinking Tonight spinach and mushroom omelette Sunday. Vegetable korma and brown rice Monday. Chilli non carne and jacket potato Tuesday nut roast with honeyed carrots and parsnips I haven't thought past there, but it's a start.

Three months of self imposed "house arrest" where I did almost nothing more than "hide" in my bedroom and watch endless hours of TV have turned my motivation muscles to flab and I'm having a very hard time getting back into action. Yesterday I did manage to load the dishwasher, run it and put away the clean stuff. I seem to tire and/or loose interest in even small tasks rather quickly and the "L" word comes to mind. I really had forgotten just how addictive watching TV can be since I'd gone many years without cable or a dish and there were lots of shows I'd never seen due to the kind of hours that I worked.
All I can do is to try and get a little more done today than yesterday and hope that the momentum grows each day.

Hi Diane and everyone! I have strayed away (again) but a new year and a new commitment. Last year I told myself if I couldn't get a handle on all the problem areas here, I would put the place up for sale and leave. Well, that would require some serious cleaning up around the place...and, my husband doesn't want to move anyway. I don't either, really. This is such a nice location, etc. Anyway, I have been spending a lot of time on FB working with a group that rescues horses from kill pens....that is, horses due to ship to slaughter in Mexico. I rescued one of them myself. (In the past year or so, we had to put down 3 of our oldest horses...so I decided I could take on another and was touched by his story, so I rescued him. But, a new year and I want to get back to really accomplishing something...not just a lick and a promise, here or there. I like the idea of choosing one project a week. My husband said that's my problem...I skip around too much and when you do that, it really is hard to see any progress. At least not enough to keep you motivated to keep going. My first project is what I call the pile of junk. Now, I had another pile of junk that I cleared out in Dice Game but this is across the driveway from that one. When we moved here, we moved from a place with a huge barn. I had all kinds of stuff stored in there...and when we moved here...no barn. A lot of it got stacked under a big oak tree beside the driveway. Over time, more has been added to it. And now we have several storage buildings but each one needs to be dealt with. I am going to start with this "pile of junk". That is my project for the week. I even hired someone one time to clear it for me....and I left, came back and they were raking leaves. I don't give a darn about leaves! I never rake them. In fact I like them to be under this particular old tree because they help keep the ground soft and moist. I wasn't going to pay anyone for raking leaves...so I told her I didn't need her help any more. I had already paid her for several days and saw little improvement. So that is my project. It is a horrible eye sore and to have it cleaned up once and for all would be a great start on the new year. Then perhaps I can knock out a project a week and be able to see some significant change around here. So....off to start on my project.

My New Year's Eve was only half succesful. I did not have to spend it at my parents's friend, because my parents were not going anywhere as well - which was the downside. But I did what I wanted anyway and cleaned a lot. Even mopped the floors!
I wanted to eat no sugar (sweets) till the end of the week, but found out I can not manage that when I am running up and down the house for boxes. I am putting off that challenge to the next week, starting on Tuesday. No way I can keep it on Monday, when we have a party at work.

I'll start today! This week's goal is to sort out the misc that ended up in the back of my bedroom closet. Wahoo, I did it! Threw out some things, put some in the Goodwill pile, moved some to more appropriate places. Then I was able to move my Christmas storage into the closet, clearing up some space in the bedroom, and to move my "memento" box into a better, more accessible space.

Catherina, I want to have dinner at your house this week! Well, except for the mushrooms, I don't like mushrooms. Everything else sounds wonderful, including the vegetable korma, which I had to look up, since I didn't know what it was. I'm a vegetarian and have several vegetarian cookbooks, so I keep thinking it would be great to make an actual recipe once in a while, so I could eat something different. But I never do. Ellen, nice to see you again! An eyesore pile by the driveway is a great goal! Although if it's been there that many years, it might take a while to dismantle. Or...maybe since you haven't used anything for so long you can get rid of the whole thing? Diane

This week: Get in 5 fruits/veggies every day.
Clear the misc stuff out of my living room. There's not that much of it, but I've been unable to get that last bit finished off.

catherina I can tell you how starting to drink water affected me. I used to until 2 years ago not drink water. I hated it. NOW, I cannot do without it and very much like the taste of water. I started drinking close to 1 gallon of water a day in early March of 2014. I wanted to be able to recover faster from the exercises I had started doing - belly dancing. And be able to dance longer. It has improved my skin, my hair, my eyes are clearer and brighter. My lips are fuller. I can tell when I don't get enough, or haven't drank enough. People thought I had lost weight, although I hadn't. Plus, it still continues to be something I do each day that I feel like I did something good for me. I am so glad that I drink water. I also look younger. This is wonderful thread. I will have to think of something that I want to do for "just a week" - for starters. bobolink - try just cutting down on sugar to start with. I am "finally" back down to 3 sodas a day. I cut 40 grams of sugar by doing that. And finally, finally, finally my weight is going down. I am drinking unsweet tea in its place. I will in time cut more out.
