Anyone? No, me neither - but since I'm cleaning the kitchen, and they're completely blackened, I might as well. If you've got oven cleaner, you've got a head start. I have to do mine the old fashioned way, with hot soapy water & a scrubbie, because we keep empty containers at my house, and I *thought* it would be an easy task. Ugh, I'm never letting it get this bad again!

I'm in. Not right away, maybe this afternoon. I don't use oven cleaner, either.

Done. I've been shoveling snow and this was a break from that. It was easier than I expected. It wasn't that bad but would have been soon. Glad you got me started. I used Simple Green. Great grease cutter. Good luck, cyn. Glad you signed up, ohblondie. Back to shoveling. :/

Just did the oven a few weeks ago and freaked out paranoid roommate... gee, imagine the self cleaning oven got hot! Go figure. She paced the floor wanting to either turn it off, flip the breaker, and/or call the landlady.... The cook top is one of those horrible glass things that you have to clean every time you use it. So it's not bad. As for the microwave, and the toaster oven, I do clean those regularly, but the microwave is soon going to have to be replaced... Same roommate uses it to boil water ... it's an 1100 watt Microwave and she puts water in for 10 minutes, it boils, condenses on the top and sides, runs down and pools in the turntable track and sits, causing the track and the edges of the bottom of the microwave to rust. I have temporarily repaired it with rustoleum appliance touch up, but that's not going to last, it's a cover up and not a "fix"

How do you clean an oven without o en cleaner? I know it smells bad but after it sits in there closed overnight I open the oven door for about an hour and turn on the fan over the stove and when the hour is up it doesn't bother me at all to stick my head in there and clean it.
I do put on an old long sleeve shirt that is worn out so I can throw it out after and that way it doesn't get all over my arms and shoulders. I also tie my hair up in an old rag to keep it from getting in there. So far it hasn't even gotten on the rag but I take precautions and could throw the rag out too if it did. I tried washing the shirt after using it one time a long time ago but it still smelled like grease and there was no way I was putting it in with my other clothes so they always get thrown out afterwards. I also bring a while roll of cheap paper towels to the oven with me and the garbage can. This way makes cleaning the oven really, really easy. All I'm doing is wiping out the foam. It's a lot easier than it sounds to do it this way.
How would you clean it without oven cleaner? I imagine that would take all day. Dollar General has oven cleaner for $2 so its pretty cheap there and if you leave it on all night like I do then its just wiping it out and no scrubbing involved.

Yay, friends to join me! Thanks, gang! I've got the elements back in, and checked to make sure I didn't break them - still working, phew. I didn't actually clean my oven, just the stove top. We use a toaster oven for baking. The stove needs to be replaced, but it's a long drawn out process - the floor needs to be done first...you get the idea...that's why my icky cabinets don't bother me so much, because they're so far down on the replacement list. I'm in the middle of scrubbing down the knob panel, using liquid TSP on a toothbrush. It's probably bad for me, but at least it doesn't smell. I started, now I have to finish it. Yuck, make it end!

i will. cyn. and congratulations on doing yours. sparkle said simple green cuts grease well, and i think i have some of that left, so i may use that... wondering if it would work on things like the greasy range hood filter and the oven? this will probably be done tonight later. i have other things i need to do today in the sorting department. to do: stove top burners and rings (they never come all the way clean. tips, anyone?) range hood above and below, and greasy filter (tips anyone?) oven

creativechaos, when I had a stove with rings, I stopped buying good ones, I would get the cheap ones and just replace them frequently. I used oven cleaner on the rest of the stove... spray, turn on fan, open window window shut door... come back later and wipe. Keeping burner covers on them helped because often my kitchen was messy and I would use the stove top as counter space and the covers kept spills out of the burners.

creativechaos , I used simple green full strength to clean the oven when I first moved here. I had tenants here who Never cleaned the oven, not once. It was brand new when they moved in and a wreck when I got them out. It took a lot of elbow grease but it worked better than other things that I tried first. I'm sure it would work well on your hood. You could easily use it diluted for that. I keep a spray bottle in the cupboard.

Thanks for the challenge Cyn My range and vent a hood is only about a year and a half old so it wasn't in too bad of shape. The glass top had a lot of burned on food so I finally used the special cleaner that came with the stove specially designed for the glass cooktop. Wow, all of that stuff came right off with a little elbow grease and not even my own DH took over when he saw me ,

It's not perfect, but it's done. I had so much *other* cleaning to do in my kitchen that I let a few things slide... but it's DONE!

cyn. I did mine today too. Im with Di, i buy cheap rings and just replace when they are really bad. I do take them out and wash them about once a week or if i spill something. The oven? Yeah, it really needs to be done. italianlady im planning on using a baking soda/water paste to clean my oven. Ill let you know how it works. Im afraid to use oven cleaner with the kitties. Theyre trained, when the oven door opens, it means good stuff is coming out (like chicken ). Since theyve never seen an oven cleaning before, i dont want to take chances. Umm, the microwave could use cleaning too. I had a spill i didnt clean up. to every one who cleaned their stove today.

Sorry, I can't get to that today. My stove is pretty new, it's not in bad shape. The oven doesn't get a lot of use, so it's not gross. And I have so much more to do. We had construction work and painting done and I need to get the house back in order. Plus my dog is sick- she's been to the vet and is doing okay but is on antibiotics so I'm keeping her inside and keeping watch over her. To top it off, it's snowing here. Shovelling later. I may try to get to it next weekend.
