?? Sorry how do you tag someone in a post on here, typing their name doesn't seem to do it.

Hi! You just put the @ sign right in front of the name.

Hover over their name. It will show you exactly what to type.
For example, if I want to tag you, I'll type notanotherdecade with the @ immediately in front of it.

You need to hover over their name first. Cus some usernames are not the same as their avatar name. Hope that makes sense.

What is the purpose of tagging? It just creates a link to their profile, right? I've never understood why we would want to do that.

outfromundah it makes a conversation easier to follow, the person can see that there is a reply for them.... I still don't understand how tagging makes a convo easier to follow. Where does one see that there is a reply for them? People have tagged me and I've never noticed any such thing. I find it very easy just to click on the "Participated" link and see which threads I've posted to have more responses after mine. I never tag people because I just don't see the use. I guess this whole tagging thing has me stymied.

.... it shows up as a number next to your profile outfromundah , so unless you were actively checking for a particular reply, or contact you would not know....

outfromundah, tagging is like tapping someone on the shoulder. That way, you know that they are responding to something you said. Whenever someone tags me, I know it because it is indicated by a number near the top of the page by the word profile. Let's say you log on, and you see a 3 up near the word profile... You click on it, and that will take you to a page that shows that someone replied to you, or quoted you, or liked your post. Three different actions happened. Could be from 3 different posters. Click on each thread, and you will see where action happened. Then you may wish to respond to them. It takes a little practice to get into it. I notice some posters don't use it much. But I do all the time. Another thing... you may have to go into your profile settings to indicate which actions you want to be notified of. I really recommend you check it out. When I finally set my settings to be notified of likes, quotes, and replies, I really enjoyed this site much more!

Another thing... you may have to go into your profile settings to indicate which actions you want to be notified of. There are a bunch of different things things that you can choose to be notified about. You can choose to be notified if someone has quoted you, which you might want to be aware of. You can choose to be notified every time someone likes one of your posts, which can rapidly lead to lots of notifications, and be time-consuming to check. You can choose to be notified anytime someone replies to any thread you've bookmarked within our board's bookmarking system (regardless of who originally started the thread). And there are several more things you can choose to be notified about. But back to the original topic of this thread: Any time someone tags you with @username, you can choose to be notified ... And people might tag you when replying to you, or they might tag you while mentioning something about you. Or they might tag you to get your attention about something. For notifications, you can choose to be notified of any of these things (being tagged, quoted, new replies to bookmarks), and a bunch of other things too. There is an option to be notified of any time someone starts a new thread or makes a new post about anything. I DON'T recommend that! That concept is for very inactive forums where it's surprising for anyone to post anything at all. You can set up the "notifications" in your profile to have it just display the little balloon number (as Sue described), which is updated in your display whenever you switch pages, refresh pages, or the next time you log in. Or you can arrange for an email to be sent to you if you are notified. Email notifications can rapidly lead to clutter, but there are options you can choose about how frequently you wish to be notified via email. Or you can request *both* the little balloon number display AND notification via email. The number balloon thingy works well if you log in frequently. The email notification works well if you don't log in often. Especially if you want to be notified if a particular thread was replied to, or if you want to be notified that someone is trying to get your attention, or if you want to know if someone quoted you.
