imamess great job on getting rid of two truckloads of stuff and the sewing machine. peaceandfreedom great job getting inspired and chucking all that old food. If you havent eaten it in the last 9 years, you are not likely to ever eat it and it is probably not good anymore anyway. So good thing its gone. (canned food doesnt last forever). I hope you can feel a bit lighter today mow that its gone. BetsyMarie great job on dumping that old food. I hope your neighbor doesnt fill his can. You are so right about it being like a gigantic bag on our back. I hope you feel lighter today too. I made a salad for lunch today and while i was digging out stuff to put in it, i found and threw out the old, slimy greens from several weeks ago and a rotten cucumber. Then i searched for any veggies that could go in the salad-greens, celery, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumber. I cut everything up and put in containers and some into the salad. So tomorrow everything will be already cut and i can just fill a salad bowl. Hopefully i will have less veggies to throw out next week because i threw it all in this week. I also finished a bottle of salad dressing. I threw the cap away and the bottle is in the sink to wash for recycling. I am not saving it!

Monday I gave my great grandmother's sewing rocker to a cousin. I can't sit in it and I really don't have the room for it. Dd didn't want it, so I passed it on to someone in the family.

imamess that is really great that you gave that to your cousin! A real win-win, you get space and she gets a family heirloom. Havent had a chance to read back here. I got rid of a twin foam mattress out of my living room today. Its been sitting tied up since i moved in here four years ago. I hadnt slept in it for five years. Most of it actually didnt leave the house. I cut the best parts from the ends to use to replace two seat cushions that needing replacing. Then i cut pieces to fit in my floor ac vents, im in a mobile home and they need "stuffing" during the winter, other wise the cold air just comes up and its drafty and freezing in here. I already put the one in the big outtake vent in, took out the ratty (beyond "grubby work") down coat, filled a black trash bag with the scraps, the old matress cover, and the coat. That will go out in the trash tomorrow. So i have two new seat cushions and custom floor vent insulation, plus more space in my living room.

Today I've been working in a back 'storage' room. REally a bedroom. It has two very large metal storage racks against the wall, and a table in the center of the room, and racks against the other wall. and a closet full from stem to stern. It's always been a storage room. But it's go so much stuff in it, it's not very functional.
Things I got rid of from that room today: -lots of stuff I'd been saving for that proverbial yard sale (now in the charity pile). -a case of catsup bottles so old it's turned dark -some rag-tag candle makings -3 cases of home canned fruits -yrs too old store-bought cans of beans and Dinty Moore stew and condiment jars. -a box of seriously old protein supplements from a diet from about 30 years ago.

I tossed out 10 glass jars today - I still have a lot left but i figure its 10 less. I have saved them over the years as I have this fantasy that one day I'll make jams and preserves but I am trying to be realistic.

I tossed out 10 glass jars today - I still have a lot left but i figure its 10 less. I have saved them over the years as I have this fantasy that one day I'll make jams and preserves but I am trying to be realistic. Me too, including the jelly dream. In fact, I have a problem with containers of all sorts. But I am getting better.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have two of those large, heavy plastic flat things people put under desks and chairs to prevent too much wear on the floor beneath. But they had gotten deformed and unusable because I had stored them, rolled up, in an extra bathtub, and in their rolled state, they sagged in the summer heat, and were now permanently pretzeled. Last year they had been moved out of that bathroom, and were in the way. (Did I think they would ever return to normal?) So today I carried one and put it into the empty, large recycling bin. The next one will go out the next time the bin is empty - it's not large enough for both of them at the same time.
Yah!!
Just put in the charity pile the box of Fimo clay chunks I got at a yard sale for a great price. And that I've never used, nor plan to use. Also, an enamel baking pan with pretzel-shaped indents. Really cute. But I'll never use it. I don't much like pretzels.
This morning I went into the garage and filled a medium-large bag to top off the neighbors half empty can for pick up soon. (I can hear the truck now.)
Nothing special went into the bag, but it felt good to be rid of another cubic foot or more of 'stuff'.
When I look into my living room, over the past few years, I know I've gotten rid of enough stuff from the entire house to have filled a space that size from top to bottom, floor to ceiling... one bag at a time.
BetsyMarie i love that kitty picture. You are definetely on a roll. You are doing absolutely amazing! Louie great job on getting rid of jars. Funny i just bought a case of quart canning jars. I dont have any hopes or plans for canning, i intend to put dry goods in them, cereal, flours, grains. I have a box full of opened bags that i need to dig through, which is a hassle so i avoid it. I want to get them into jars so they dont spill, i can see and use them. But thats me and my need. I dont advocate saving stuff that isnt being used or buying stuff for "someday" Today so far, i tossed old heating pad that doesnt work and a ripped dress i had hoped to repair. To donate, some socks (brand new, i will never wear them) and a poncho. Washed the slipcovers for the old sofa cushions, as soon as they are dry, they will be put back on and bagged up to take for donations. Still sorting through pillows and outerwear. redallie cross posted. Great job on bag of donations.
I got rid of: About half (approximately 30) of my cookbook collection. Boxed up and in the vehicle. Office Supplies/paper/organizing materials no longer needed (some trash, some to donate). Paperwork, old checkbooks, registers: put in order and/or shredded. PEEP
Who is this person that has moved into my house...don't recognize the bursts of energy and determination for culling and cleaning.
ON the flip side, my sleep has been disrupted of late. I wonder if it has something to do with going through all these things, feeling overwhelmed at times by the enormity of it all. I am more determined than ever to not have it become a burden for others. Need to get a grip on this and keep it up!
BetsyMarie, I can relate to the impractical or unused, aspirational kitchen items. I haven't donated but should release the following: tortilla press tortilla shell shaper (for taco salad - fluted form shape heavy mortar and pestle (already have a lighter one in use) duplicates of braun hand-held emulsifier - at least 4 duplicates of kitchen scales - at least 4 duplicates of coffee grinders - 2 more and I donated 2 last month
