Hi all
I have been living in chaos/squalor/whatever you want to call it for years now. I make jokes about how messy my place is, but only a few know how bad it really is. I've made many abortive attempts to sort it - these usually last a week or two and then everything returns to its previous state. Now, however, I have been losing very important paperwork, credit cards etc are missing and I can never find anything. I can hardly move for carrier bags, piles of things, boxes, and am starting to find it claustrophobic. And depressing. And disgusting. I became seriously anxious when my broadband packed up and they were talking about an engineer coming to fix it (fortunately he only worked outside the property). I have Asperger's syndrome and a number of mental health conditions, which doesn't help.
Both of my parents were/are hoarders, and this is the sort of environment I grew up in (actually it was worse). At least my mum has had help to get things in order - my father was found dead in his flat which looked like something you would see on A Life of Grime (even the police struggled to open the front door because there was so much stuff behind it). Not what I want for myself, hence I'm here.
All the best BaffledOwl

Hi Owl, harness the energy you're feeling when you look around and feel bad about what you see! You can develop new habits, it takes time and work, but it's possible. Join in a work-along thread or chat, and start chipping away at your mess--you'll be glad you did!
Welcome to the site.

Welcome! Theres alot of information here and lots of wonderful people who are/have struggled through the same thing. It is possible to change and learn new habits. Be patient with yourself, the mess didnt happen overnight. From what you said, you have probably never been taught how to clean and declutter. Join a work a long thread or try chat. Start your own blog. Try different things, find what works best for you.

You have reached the key stage where you have had enough of living like that and want to do something about it.
It is possible to completely change the way you live. This is best done slowly, step by step, as this gives you time to adjust to an improving environment and learn good habits.
Is your home very big? Have you got much spare time? Do you live in a town or rural area? Have you got any pets?
It is important not to give information that would identify you but you will get tailored suggestions if you give some background information.

Hi there BaffledOwl. I'm English too, though living in France. If you're around during the day I am always happy to work along with people in Chat. I find it helpful to have company to get stuff done (usually, I'm having a slow couple of weeks achievement-wise tbh).

Oh, and most weekdays I start a Coming up Next thread in listzilla where I list what I would like to get done and then work through it, to a greater or lesser degree. Again, please feel free to join in, however long or short your list is.
