I realized that I was doing well with the timer idea but most of what I was accomplishing was maintaining small things rather than not making any dramatic change.

My timer goal idea was originally to do up to 60 minutes of housetasking per day, broken up typically into either 4 15mins, 3 20mins or 2 30 minutes. Nothing has changed in my life. I still suffer from chronic fatigue, I'm still going through menopause, but I think I'm entering a new phase of this project.

I'm challenging myself to 2 hours daily rather than shooting for one hour. I did it on Sat and I did it on Monday. There was a lot of me pushing myself and getting tired, like "Isn't it time for that timer to buzz yet?" moments but the clutter and squalor is really getting under control a lot faster☆

I find myself feeling encouraged by the progress. The trick is to break it up throughout the day, if you are like me and can't tackle a bunch of overwhelming stuff at once.

The worst of the chores is the back yard. Even if I'm only putting 20-30 minutes into it every 24hours, an impact is still being made.

Closet, good for you for pushing yourself to do more--I consider my timer essential to my efforts!

I love what you are doing in the maintaining area closetofchaosI too have learned how to clean as I go because I really don't want to otherwise. Tonight, I cleaned in my kitchen while I was in there cooking dinner. I washed up, put dishes in the dishwasher. Did some recycling, I swept the floor and threw leftovers away... clearing out the refrigerator. I'm going to try to completely clean my kitchen like this and maintain the clean. It will be a challenge.

I have no excuses not to clean my house. There's snow outside, I have plenty of food in fridge and freezer, we have heat and electricity, TV for companionship (if I want it). My washer and dryer are working, ditto the dishwasher. Nothing to stop me...

ohblondie sometimes I have to slow down intensity when I do it just to make it through the hour because of the physical activity exhausts me. It's no intimidating then:)

closetofchaos, it's good to be experimenting with how you will be doing maintenance. On one hand, there is the simple equation of more time spent = better results. On the other hand, if we start associating cleaning and maintenance chores with pain and overwhelm, eventually we will stop. Cleaning up from an activity as soon as you are done with an activity can be a strategy. Too, as you are seeing, doing small bits throughout the day. I'm sure you will find your balance with this. Well done.

Wow, Closet, you've kept up your desqualoring momentum for ages now. Be proud! And if you are, as you say, doing all this "zombieshly and with self doubt" you are even more awesome than you realise. Many people wait for a burst of energy and enthusiasm. Not you. You just get stuck into thrashing that squalor unto death, and because of that, you will conquer it and regain your clean and lovely home. Maintenance of small chores or areas is progress, too. It may feel like a maddening plateau, but in maintenance we form good habits that will help us keep our homes in order once the deep desqualoring is done. Go, Closet, go! Day by day, bit by bit.
